  • In this video, we talk about the EHEIM classic 250 canister filter, one of the oldest canister filters in the aquarium hobby. In order to dispel one of the biggest criticisms, I walk through the cleaning process. Thanks for watching.

    Should i turn off the electricity first and then shut off the valves? Oh and i noticed you removed the rubber end of the spray bar, when did you remove it? Before turning off the filter from electricity? Thanks!

    It would be good if you put the new filter pads back in…

    I've had this filter for about 7 years on a 36 Gallon planted low tech tank. I have some phosphate issues but my water is clear - just getting some brown algae and bba on a few plants. In your video you mention having an additional sponge filter and aqua clear filter running purigen. So you have 3 filters on the 40 gallon tank? I purchased phosphate media pad that I am planning to add to my canister. Any other suggestions? Would running additional filters help?

      Hey. The 40 has the Eheim canister and a hob for chemical media and a sponge filter. Running additional filters isn’t likely to help with the algae. I would recommend cutting down the lights (use a timer if you don’t already have one) to no more than 6 hours a day, less if needed, and doing more water changes. In my experience, young Siamese algae eaters will munch of bba.

    Does Eheim classic series has more than one rubber gasket in its body? What eheim classic filter should you suggest for 150 litres tank?

      You could use a 250, but if you wanted strong filtration I would use the 600. I believe that is about 40 US gallons. Lol. 😅

    Thank you, great video as I just purchased one of these. BTW should the biological media be washed in tap water also, and how often do you think they should be cleaned?

    • @nextdooraquatics5013
      @nextdooraquatics5013  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You could wash it in tap. To be safe, I clean biological media in tank water. Cleaning will depend on your stocking levels. I would break it open after a month and see how dirty it is. If it’s still relatively clean, maybe go 2 months.

      Hey. The flow isn’t super crazy, especially with the spray bar. I have it with the spray bar across one of the sides of the tank and the intake in the center of the back of the tank.

      Most likely not. You could shut the value before the filter, though, to ensure your syphon remains intact.

    I used to have a 650l aquarium with cichlids. Two 350 eheim filters. What it did at some point to stop cleaning the filters is install small pre-filters with white foam. Then every week i would just clean the pre-filters and never touch my large filters again.

    • @nextdooraquatics5013
      @nextdooraquatics5013  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Having a prefilter definitely extends time between cleanings greatly. As long as you had decent flow, probably no need to open and clean them. 👌

    The 2213 is a good filter gotta be one of the best on the market but there old school no primer button and no trays just think if they made a new version of the classic and it was the classic 2.0 it had a priming button and round trays that joined together they cud even built in heater model that'd be a top filter. Eheim shouid made a new type a filter something different its been a while they just keep making copys of the pros

    You should be cleaning mechanical filter pads using aquarium water. If your tap water is chlorinated then it will cause damage to bacterial bloom.

    • @nextdooraquatics5013
      @nextdooraquatics5013  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The filter has separate biological media. There is evidence to suggest that cleaning out sponges and even sponge filters using tap water has little effect on beneficial bacteria in the small amount of time it takes to clean the sponges. Check out primetime aquatics video on the topic. They use only sponge filters and clean them under tap water and have no issues. Thanks for the comment.

    • @nextdooraquatics5013
      @nextdooraquatics5013  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have a video on this. Under the short amount of time it takes to clean sponges under tap water, negligible bacteria is killed and should not impact your cycle in any way. I and other people do this all the time and do not have ammonia spikes. Additionally, beneficial bacteria lives on every surface in your tank: glass, substrate, wood, etc., etc.
