Hey Eli? My Wife did my family tree, Im of Dutch ancestry She is Brit/French and had done hers. She followed my genealogy to around 40AD before it got hard and the record keeping detail was mind-blowing. Sinterklaas or Santa Claus as you know him is a Germanic Tribes thing and Dec 5th and 6th are the celebration days, Santa has Elves, St Nick or Sinterklaas has Helpers or Pieten (Zwarte Peit) who hand out Candy and pepernoten (From memory a small spicy baked treat like a cookie that might have become Coal lumps). The history of why Pieten are coloured is probably because they were Turkish (Its complicated ). Internet origins are murky and cleansed but my understanding of the history came from a Dutch Encyclopaedia from the 1960's I read as a kid. The Dutch as a whole are a long and interesting story and it explains a lot about the modern Dutch people but Santa Claus is worth a read. Merry Christmas Mate to all of you and your Families. We dont put up a tree and the gifts are deliverd by people/helpers going through the chimney (thats why they are black) it was definitely not meant to be rasist but yeah. Its a weirdly hard issue here cuz people grew up with it so they dont want to let go. A little more info on our weird fuckey tradition.
