⭐️ Phonology is the process of pronouncing sounds together to form words and sentences.
⭐️ Word shape refers to a recognizable phonological pattern such as consonant, vowel, consonant, like the words bat, mom, and dog.
⭐️ When children try to produce words that are more complex than their speech system can handle they naturally simplify the word shape in order to be successful. We call this using phonological processes, and it's expected of all young children as they learn to speak.
⭐️ The phonological processes of leaving consonant sounds off the beginning of words or off the ends of words typically resolves by the time a child turns three, keep in mind, this only applies for words containing sounds we would expect them to master by that age.
⭐️ Many other phonological processes are expected to persist through the beginning of elementary school while children's speech systems are still developing.
⭐️ If you're concerned about your child's speech development, consult a speech therapist. SLP's are trained to listen for complex phonological patterns in your child's speech.
⭐️ Lastly, you can help your child learn new phonological patterns at home, but only if practice stays fun for them. These are not easy skills to teach, and pushing your child too hard can actually impede future progress in speech therapy.
