I am no way a fan of Taslima Nasrin. In fact I think 80% of her opinions come from a place of hatred and phobia. But i would like to defend her comment about society pressuring women to maintain beauty standard from my own life experience. I am nearly 30 years old. Average or under average looking unmarried woman. I hate make up, beauty, fancy clothing sort of things. When my own family points out to me that the reason I am not getting any decent marriage proposal is because I am ugly. Because I refuse to work for a skinny body. Because I can't present myself in a desirable way through make up and beauty products. Like BD people's typical belief regarding feiminsm, I don't want a so called independent lonely life. Then again I don't want to take part in a marriage where my first qualification is achieving beauty standard. The way every week I face regular bodyshaming from my own family- tell me how it is not society imposing it's beauty standard on women like me?

And only then it can give you guidance. Every human being is endowed with two things, (1) free will and (2) sense of right and wrong. That's why Islam is called deen-al-fitrah. A person must not blindly follow any scholar or any rule without using his or her God given moral sense. Anyone doing so has given up his or her Human Agency which Mr. Faham is talking about. He has picked on Bengali nationalism here. But it applies to many other groups including Marxists and so-called "Islamists" who tend to suppress free will and human agency. Marxists do not believe in human agency due to their materialistic philosophy. On the other hand so called scholars and "Islamists" are denying human agency through their misconception that someone else (e.g. a mujtahid or an imam, or a scholar) will make decision for you. In fact so many rules of halal and haram, do's and don'ts have been churned out that mass people are getting distracted from the very basic moral duties. Every piece of corruption at every level of bureaucracy in our country entails a lie. A corruption simply just cannot happen without a lie. Changing verdicts by lower court judges for money (it happens in B-Desh) again means the judge is lying about case facts. If we cannot stand up against this at individual level then there is no hope. Blaming "the system" and thereby avoiding our individual responsibility of human agency, and then going with the flow is currently the practice of you, me, and most of us in the society. You have missed the fine lines. You have to learn how to read between the lines. Bengali nationalism, Marxism, and Feminism are not same. However, in all three of them personal responsibility is brushed aside in order to lay the blame on someone or something else. And all three of them puff up their own group with a blind eye to the faults of people within the group. In Bengali nationalism the blame is on those who do not subscribe to Bengali nationalism. In Marxism, the blame is on the rich and do not belong to the working class. And in feminism the blame is always on the patriarchy. Individual responsibility is shunned. I hope now you know the common thread that passes through all these three groups.

You have missed the fine lines. You have to learn how to read between the lines. Bengali nationalism, Marxism, and Feminism are not same. However, in all three of them personal responsibility is brushed aside in order to lay the blame on someone or something else. And all three of them puff up their own group with a blind eye to the faults of people within the group. In Bengali nationalism the blame is on those who do not subscribe to Bengali nationalism. In Marxism, the blame is on the rich and do not belong to the working class. And in feminism the blame is always on the patriarchy. Individual responsibility is shunned. I hope now you know the common thread that passes through all these three groups.

However, they believe in dialectic materialism which denies human agency and free will. Moral values, according to Marxists, are phenomena which come from class position. In other words moral values objectively do not exist and they are just a part of the superstructure, and therefore primarily depends on your position in the class struggle. A worker in a factory and an owner of the factory do not have any common ground where they can resolve their differences. This is entirely opposite from Islam where moral values are considered as an endowed gift to human beings by God and human beings can exercise their human agency and free will to exercise or not to exercise those morals. Resultantly, communists ended up speaking on behalf of the proletariat. And that is nothing other than a group-think. Exactly similar to nationalism.
