    I took one of those cheap art kits that come in a wooden carrying case, hollowed it out, lined the bottom with velcro, and filled it with about 100 full pans of paint attached with adhesive velcro (so it's secure, but I can rearrange it,) and I put a swatch chart with brand and pigment information on the inside of the lid. Both have matching latitude/longitude coordinates (think Battleship, ie B4, C6, G9, etc.)
    I know it's crazy, but I love it.

      That's craftsmanship. 👍 😄 The word your looking for isn't "crazy". It's "eccentric". 😉

    I love to work small, either in a travel sketchbook or 5x7", so I'm a fan of the half pans so I can take as many colors as possible with me. However, I totally agree, full pans are way better if you like to paint large and they let you use nice big brushes in them. I try not to use half pans with brushes bigger than about size 8 round or 1/4" flats, it feels awkward.

    It's kind of funny because I never realized the way I put my brush in compared from half to full pan until you pointed that out! Maybe that's why I gravitate toward my aqua brushes for half and natural hair for full...

    Usually my hack for protecting hair points is using a taklon/synthetic scripter to pick the paint i want and then put it on my palette for mixing. Then I paint with my black velvets. It helps me protect the quality of my professional brushes that way. I use both sizes pans depending on what I feel like doin'.

    I like small pans for a day's outing but full pans for a longer time , say a couple of day sketching or more away from home. Great stuff Teoh, well done.

    If you remove the metal clip that holds the pans in the metal box, you can fit more half or full pans into it. You can make the pans stay in place with magnetic tape or velcro stuck to the bottom of the pans. This gives you more options of how to arrange the full/half pans.

  • @barefacedquestions

    I paint small and I thought I'd like half pans until I bought them. It is awkward to dip any brush larger than size 4 round into them. It takes forever to mix. Sometimes the paint will splash onto the neighboring pans! There are always colors that you use more than others, and they run out even more quickly if you use half pans.
    I think sketchers are going to benefit the most from half pan, but I still prefer full pan for sketching. Just my two cents for anyone still on the fence about half pan vs full pan.

  • @BoBnfishy

    I don't paint super big, but I prefer full pans for the reason you described. I like to work very gently with my brushes and collecting paint gently at an angle just feels better to me

  • @gorway7

    I have half pans in my field sketch box but I hate the way you wind up drilling holes in the paint. I try to consciously pick up by swiping along the sides but it's fiddly. Keeping pans filled helps avoid digging holes and reduces brush damage. I much prefer whole pans but they do vary in shape and size a lot. My large Cotman Studio palette will only take Winsor Newtons tapered pans or requires the separater ridges cutting out. I have found problems with other pan / palette combinations too but generally not half pans.

      Hey!
      I just wanted to give some tips since you are coming to wc from acrylics:
      1) DON'T USE WHITE! Instead of white use water to lighten colors as they get opaque and muddy thus not being great for layering
      2) DON'T USE THE SAME BRUSHES FOR WC AND ACRYLICS! brushes used for acrylics hold less water so they are not generally recommended for wc and wc shouldn't be used for acrylics as they will get damaged.
      3) ONLY USE WATERCOLOR PAPER! Unlike gouache, acrylics and oils wc can only be used on wc paper as other surfaces arnt very absorbant.
      That's it! Hope this is somewhat helpful! Oh and ps sorry for any grammatical errors English isn't my first language

    For outdoor sketching, half pans 24 in number, Indoors, full pans 36. Russian White Nights watercolours. As they only come in full pans, I use their tube colour equivalents to fill my half pans.

    I prefer half-pans, as I work small, also as I don't usually have any luxury to mix paints on a go, I am trying to fit as many necessary hues/shades/colours as possible for easy work. I carry one small but pretty high (about 2cm) tin that fits 30 most essential half-pans on magnetic bases (in two layers, 15 stuck to the tin itself and 15 stuck to the lid, upside-down, with a layer of soft plastic paper between) and second flat metal tin from chocolates (Heidel Euro money metal tin, to be precise) for another not-so-critical-but-nice-to-have ~45 half-pans, to total of about ~75 half-pans that can fit into my pocket. I could never get used to any official metal palettes, too big or/and restrictive.
    Sadly, two of my favourite pans of particularly rich colours (ultramarine and turquoise) are from White Nights and they only make full pans.

    I fit 8 full pans into my Schmincke tin by taking the tray out and hot gluing them vertically. I won't have to worry about the pans moving, but if i really need to change one of my colors i can just refill one of the pans. I think it looks nice this way as well. :-)

    Is there any difference in keeping the colors clean? I use half pans and I find I struggle to keep the light colors clean, which is super annoying. I'm wondering if full pans would maybe make this easier? The cerulean blue for instance always turns a little greenish/greyish when I'm painting skies... I'm thinking that maybe with a larger surface for one any mess would be more visible, and secondly, there's more space to choose from? Great tips by the way! I hadn't thought how I load the brush in terms of wearing down the point.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To prevent contamination, you've got to clean your brush first. Also try to use those colours that are easy to dirty first. Eg yellow.

    • @kjellkanin
      @kjellkanin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@teohyc I guess I still haven't figured out how to mix colours without contaminating them. I find I have to reach for more paints many times before I have enough and to rinse out the brush completely for each time would cause loads or pigment to go to waste. I thought maybe a larger surface of paint would make it easier to not contaminate the whole thing.
