    No one mentioning the bass player, Nathan East? Most under rated bass player of all time. Eric Clapton has reasons he is the best living blues guitarist.

  • @robertlabaw2037
    @robertlabaw2037 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    If you watch the other musicians when Eric goes into this solo, they are all smiling knowing that they are part of something special. Clapton has altered his style a little as time has marched on, both in his dress appearance (sensible and comfortable attire - looks more like he should be watching a kids soccer game than playing a concert before thousands of fans) and he plays in a lower key to match his vocal range. I have been a fan of his music for more years than I care to say, and there is always one of his songs that will match whatever mood you're in at the time. One of my "new" favorites is his version of "Got to Get Better in a Little While - Live at Crossroads 2013" as we start to see some light in all this COVID mess.

      That version of Got to Get Better in Little While in 2013 is fantastic. Especially given the fact that it is played by a 68-year-old legend!

      @Robert LaBaw. Check out the Daily Motion video of him playing Don't Think Twice It's Alright at Bob Dylans 30th anniversary concert. Apart from having the CD , it's the only video version I have been able to find. A truly outstanding solo that had the rest of the players giving him an ovation. Enjoy.

    Eric Clapton is a legend and rightfully so. I haven't listened to this song for a long time, heartbreaking as it is, it was wonderful to hear it again. Somewhere I have a CD with this song on it, I think it is time to put it in my car and listen to it for a while again. Eric puts his feelings out through his guitar and his voice and together they take us into his private journey and struggle. Perfect blues. Thank you for reacting to this.

    I never, never enjoyed the studio cut of this song on "Pilgrim." Simon Climie's production was ahead of its time and I realize that now, but it was such a departure from Clapton's "sound" for drum machines and trendy synths that I couldn't get my head around it. The guitar on the song is nothing at all like this, and it completely blew me away when I got to hear him do it live. I'm so glad there's concert footage of him doing it, because for more than 50 years he's always been so much better onstage than in the studio. I feel like people who see him live really understand his gift.
    People who only hear his tracks on the radio really have no idea what the fuss is all about, and you can't really blame them. But this is the way he was meant to be heard.

    If you ever see Clapton live, where he's the headliner, it's a guarantee that he will be surrounded by great musicians. At the concert where this video was recorded, he wanted a sax player for some of the songs so he goes out and gets David Sanborn! Who wouldn't want to play with a legend?

    He once said that he went to the only place he could go and that was back into music. No matter what was happening he always used music to find his way through it. There's a reason he's a 3 time Rock n roll HOF (as messed up as the hall is) inductee....and he could even be considered twice more in my opinion for Derek and the Dominoes and Blind Faith.

    For a beautiful tune, Chod, try “My Father’s Eyes“. You’ll be able to relate it to your father. Really good tune. A fun tune that I’ve never seen a reaction to is “if I don’t be there by morning“ off the live “24 nights“ album. If you want a slow, beautiful tune, another one no one has ever reacted to, try “Another Ticket”. A couple fun upbeat numbers are “pretending“, “tangled in love“ and “She’s Gone”. And a beautiful earlier song (1974) is “let it grow“. A fun funky blues number, even earlier is “bad boy“.

    This is the second cut from the Pilgrim album. Clapton said he decided to make the saddest album he could. The first cut, "My Father's Eyes," is another killer song...and of course it is sad as well. Great album that shows Clapton in his full maturity and mastery of his craft.

    This entire concert is remarkable. This is from a 1999 concert that was the precursor to Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festivals, which raise money for the alcohol and drug rehab center he founded. Guest performers included Mary J Blige, Sheryl Crow, Bob Dylan, and David Sanborn.
    That concert’s versions of Layla and Wonderful Tonight (with a great turn from Katie Kissoon, one of the backup singers) are excellent, but I urge you to react to a lesser-known, but brilliant song called Old Love. th-cam.com/video/thDDr-3HiYU/w-d-xo.html. Not only is Clapton’s playing brilliant, the keyboards solo by Tim Carmon is astonishing. I’ve never heard anything like it before.
    Your insights in Clapton are very interesting, because you only know a little of his history. Clapton had a long history of addiction with heroin and alcohol. It is amazing is that he did not relapse after Conor’s death. Many of his friends feared he would. Instead, he came back a few years later with Tears in Heaven and the Unplugged album, which were some of his most successful work.
    In a way, the Clapton that emerged in the early 1990s was a more settled, more self-assured performer. If you look over just history, he always seemed to be trying to find a sound. He went from leaving the Yardbirds because it wasn’t pure enough blues to the heavier blues-psychedelia of Cream to the angsty, southern blues sound of Derek and the Dominos (which he formed using a pseudonym to avoid the expectations that came with being a guitar god) to a soft-rock of the 70s to the slick, over-produced 80s albums. (Some of that stuff was so bad, Clapton feared his record label would drop him.) There were good songs all along and he remained an incredible live performer, but I always thought he never felt comfortable being Eric Clapton, guitar god. After Tears and Unplugged, that seemed to change. He seemed to embrace being a guitar legend and realized he could play whatever he wanted. If he wanted to do an album with BB King or JJ Cale or a tour with Steve Winwood, he could. If he wanted to host multi-day music festivals that brought together the best guitarists in the world, he could. So I think what you see in this concert and in later Clapton music is a more relaxed and self-confident man who doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone. And it shows in how brilliantly he plays and how he lets the other performers have their moments to shine as well.
