the powders your friend throws are different elements as far as i know. In my chemistry class we did somethign similar but with one of those lab fire things. the only thing i remember is copper is like a green/blue and potassium is purple!

It's really fucky, and I wrote a project on reaction speeds of compounds and fireworks. It's really damn cool to see how fireworks are made and how the science behind it works.
