There are two theories i have about that, Although one does contain a spoiler, the non spoiler one being he just remembers being upset, although not knowing why: Or basically, Solas being the Dread Wolf prevents him from losing his memory,
I wish that when you reject them they will sometime come back. And it doesn't matter as a good character that will help you out of somewhere or some dark badass that will lead an enemy army etc. It would be so cool.
To be honest it would be kinda cool to have some of them as enemies later on the story, like maybe Iron Bull and his Chargers get hired by someone else idk
You know, if you really think about it, technically none of the companions besides Cassandra Varric and Solas actually join the Inquisition in a strictly canonical sense, due to them being optional rather than mandatory companions. It makes me wonder if you reject a potential companion where they go off to or what other unseen adventures they’ll have if you choose not to recruit a certain companion.

For me, Cole and Dorian are key members I will always recruit and befriend. Blackwall and Sera are decent characters to have around as well. Vivienne is a pain but I generally have her too because I like balance in my crew. But I've gotten to the point where I just don't recruit Iron Bull anymore. Having seen firsthand his betrayal in Trespasser, especially when he was in a romance with Dorian, that's just something I don't want in my game anymore. And no, I didn't sacrifice the Chargers. It really just got to me how totally stupid it was to have an outright spy for a group such as the Qunari in my Inner Circle. And it had always bothered me how easily he could just turn his back on them for the Inquisition. Some might argue that it's a good thing but I see it as very troubling. He'd been with the Qun all his life. He'd been trained to be a liar and pass himself off as Tal-Vashoth to be better at his job. He'd even reached a point of losing himself and turned to the re-educators to "guide" him back to where he needed to be. Except even Coie, if he's with you, states he felt absolutely nothing from Iron Bull during battles and fights, as if he'd divorced himself completely from the act of killing living beings so that he could avoid the guilt afterwards. And that comes back into play in Trespasser when he turns on everyone for the Qunari and the Viddasala. It's just too cold, too calculated and even when he chooses to side with the Inquisition and the Inquisitor, it all feels temporary as if his ultimate betrayal is just lying in wait for the right moment. I just don't think I could ever trust him again. Oh and you can get him to betray you in Trespasser by avoiding his personal quest, Demands of the Qun altogether, not only by doing it and choosing to save the Chargers instead of the dreadnaught. So yeah, no more Iron Bull for me. Blackwall's lies eventual see the light of day and I have no problem giving him another chance to continue what he'd been doing for years, trying to atone for his past mistakes. Cullen's doing the same without lyrium. Cole's doing it by being more human and learning to deal with the real Cole's life. Vivienne continues to be a bitch but that's fine. Sera's just weird by funny. Dorian is fantastic and loyal as hell. Whenever my Inquisitor was in any sort of danger, he'd be the first to run up and see if I was okay and he'd always ask if I was okay after entering the Fade. No one else really bothered asking. Thanks for showing us the rejection option on these characters because all options give an insight into the mind of characters. It's a long game and I never used these options.
This is actually my third playthrough so I was just messing around with mods this time and having fun making the characters look different. I also may have just wanted to see what Blackwall looked liked without the beard...:P Didn't think that Blackwall's beard would be such a popular topic when I recorded this haha. While it's great they give you the option to reject companions from a role-playing perspective, I have to wonder why they even bothered lol? It's not like you lose anything by having them join you, you're not even forced to take them with you on quests. I can't understand why anybody would reject a particular character when they'd be nothing but an asset, unless they just really hate that particular character I guess. Also aww Cole's is the most heartbreaking, he sounds like a kicked puppy!
What were you left with...? I'm positive if you do this. During trespasser you'll have only two companions with you which is pretty rest in peace in my opinion.

A good experience :) I can now safely say that of all followers I could dismiss only Vivienne without a blink - provided she doesn't somehow sneak her way into Inquisition through some other means. Oh, I wish there was a full playthrough without her involvement whatsoever. Is there?
Being able to refuse followers was the only thing that made this game finishable for me. I never would have been able to stomach finishing the game if i had the keep Interacting with Vivienne, Sera or Ironbull, One look at them and i wanted nothing to do with them

Funny is my first playthrough was Varric, Solas and Cassandra with me all the time so I would actually be totally fine without any of them.
