    I honestly just want both in one. Open World + Classic formula Zelda. While I personally loved Botw and had a really positive experience with it, I recognize it was barebones and would of benefited having more of that old zelda touch. There was room for improvement and Totk was supposed to be that improvement. But nope, Nintendo clowned us all. I'm pretty sure that slap to the face price tag was to cover for collateral damages. I can't imagine why else they'd drop it on us the way they did, then say no future DLC, etc.
    I think a lot of fans feel like you, and I definitely agree with some of what you said for sure. I don't see why we have to abandon Zelda's foundations--- it should've never ended up like this. I mean, I guess Echoes of Wisdom might be the silver lining for classic zelda styles but it's hard to say. Or trust rn. The disappointment I felt for ToTK was so strong, I'm actually afraid to look forward to any of their future zelda games or even that damn movie now. Before I would of been so excited, and a lot more eager to buy. Now? I am just so skeptical that they won't try to pull something like that with their customers again. I'm not never going to consider Zelda games because It's my favorite childhood franchise, but I definetly want to save myself the anguish and not endure a repeat.

    TotK fucked up because it didn't restrict you in any ways for puzzles, the over world was bland because Hyrule didn't rebuild AT ALL and especially criminal that there is no Castle Town, the story is executed badly with the memory shit as it doesn't work here and anyone but Zelda has ASS character building "Secret stone, improsoning war!!!" Fuck off with that repetetive ass bs. Oh and the sky and depths were bland af too.
    And the worst part of it all is Bokoblins are the most low effort repeated enemies ever URGH. Imagine being told by nintnedo we could make death traps and all sorts to kill enemies but why whould you when you could just shoot a few arrows. And to top it off, they kept talking about these 'pirates' in the game. Dare I say I was EXCITED. Until... It's mfing Bokoblins AGAIN. Not only is it copy and pasted enemies once more where it shouldn't have been, but they collectively don't even have the IQ to run pirate crews. So it doesn't even make sense canonically!!
    They made me wait 6 years for this? Zelda may truly be dead.
    Gonna go play Tunic

      Yeah, only for them to be seen as if they were starting the process of rebuilding. They made a big deal about it in the ending of BoTW.

    I don't enjoy the open world sandbox thing they've been going for. I started playing Skyward Sword HD and I'm in love with that game. There're characters and there's a plot happening currently and not in the distant past. Item progression. The sword doesn't break. Cool boss fights. Bonafide real Zelda dungeons. With real puzzles and everything.

    I feel the exact same way. Except for the fact that i actually hate it.
    It took 6 years to make BoTW, and then becuz of the success of it, they decided to make an over glorified DLC that took another 6 years
    I haven't enjoyed a Zelda game since Twilight Princess which came out in 2006. It's been almost 20 years.
    I want my goddamn Zelda back. Not this open world shit.

  • @Joe_334
    @Joe_334 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    As someone who's first game was ALttP, BoTW and ToTK was a welcome addition for me. I hated having to start a whole new game because the bosses stayed dead, and the save being limited to only the last Ganon Fight in the older games. One thing that was great about the 3d remake of OoT was that the bosses could be fought again. ToTK at least made up for that with the respawning bosses. They need to keep this for remaking older games.
    I will never forget how shocked I was when after completing the last temple on Wind waker(2003 version). I was expecting more, when the rest of the game felt like a scavenger hunt having to hunt down the eight fragments of the triforce of courage.

    • @displayland1988
      @displayland1988  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yea respawning temple bosses is a good idea it can be fun to replay them with different items.

  • @HenrikMyrhaug
    @HenrikMyrhaug 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

    I was quite disappointed with BotW, because despite the gameplay being fun, the open world is too big and empty, the shrines and korok seeds are too repetitive, the dungeons are boring, the story is boring, the bosses are boring.
    IMO, they just made it big and open for the sake of being big, they never took advantage of it to enhance the gameplay or tell an interesting story.
    TotK was sligtly better, but still has pretty much all the same issues. If you haven't played either and want to play one, I would recommend you skip BotW and only play TotK, but I enjoyed it less just because it is mostly just the same game with a different coat of paint on the dungeons.

    • @sfrert2759
      @sfrert2759 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Honestly, I think is better the empty world of BOTW than the overloaded world of TOTK.

  • @brendanblair64
    @brendanblair64 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    I liked BotW, but was severely disappointed in TotK. It made me really concerned for the future of the series, and question if I should continue being a fan. The reused map in a game about exploration was especially a game ruining thing for me. I'm still so confused by all the praise the game got, because I really don't see it.
    But yeah, to anyone who doesn't like open world Zelda at all; I totally get it. I respect that the Zelda devs want to make open world Zelda games now, but I don't see why someome else can't continue making more traditional ones too. Like how Capcom used to make top-down Zelda games. Maybe Grezzo could do that with traditional 3D Zelda? Either way, it's so baffling to me that they would just drop this universally loved gameplay entirely.

    • @displayland1988
      @displayland1988  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Yea there alot of fans asking for traditional dungeons again. That would be a cool idea to let a smaller game dev team take a crack at the traditional formula while Nintendo makes the big open world stuff

    It's not just Zelda, other series have been hopping on the "freedom" bandwagon and I just don't get the appeal. Pokemon is doing it and had to sacrifice basic things like being able to enter buildings, and trainers having more than one pokemon. Sonic Frontiers was okay but a lot of it just felt like BOTW but Sonic. Haven't played Elden Ring but I've heard complaints that it doesn't have the same tight level design because everything has to be in open fields.
    Now there's rumors that the next Mario is gonna be open world and I was already not feeling Odyssey with its 880 filler moons, so... at least we got Wonder.

    Really stings that this is what they’re going with from here on. It could be another six or seven years till we get another Zelda, and to wait that long just for another game in a style I don’t prefer to the older games just feels bad. Zelda outgrew me, I guess.

    It's an interesting thing, considering how much the franchise has gone through changes over time. But I understand where you come from in wanting an older more linear kind of progression back. I admit that I never ended up playing either BoTW or ToTK, but they never really had that 'hook' like the older games did for me. The presentation is there, the set is as well, and while I know you said you weren't a fan of the cell shading, I'm quite pleased with how it looks. But the gameplay is really what didn't entice me. I enjoy the openness as it were, being able to do and go anywhere is a neat concept - that is unfortunately overdone as you had also mentioned - but that's all too lacking when it doesn't have a good source of direction.
    My favorite has been Twilight Princess because to me it's like a tour of force for the series; it has a wonderful story that while yes has some more forced moments is one I still remember to this day, the characters are well written and convincingly integrated into the world they live in, and the setting and atmosphere is top notch, only second maybe to Majora's Mask. It's this kind of thing that I think Zelda really excels in when it has a sort of linear-ness but with a freedom to explore at your own pace. It seems like both switch games take that freedom element and make that the focus, leaving a lot of filling in to be had by the player. Which isn't a bad thing! But having done it twice seems like a missed point on their part.

    Totk is obviously a bad game but botw is, in my opinion, the ocarina of time of our time in the sense it’s a new hope for a serie that has been doing the exact same thing for like 20 years, you may don’t like this new direction and obviously there are things to polish for the next games (the temples) but, in the end, botw was a masterpiece and one of the most important games of the past decade

    Thanks for sharing my exact thoughts. I look at both as good standalone games, but TotK is a horrible sequel in my opinion. I’ve realized the only reason I actually enjoyed TotK is because it’s been years since I played BotW. I’m tired of open world games and I’ll probably never replay these games specifically. Don’t get me wrong, it works for some genres and obviously a lot of people enjoy them, but I much prefer more linear games because there’s an actual sense of progression and you don’t spend over half the play time just walking or climbing around endlessly for no or lackluster rewards.

    • @displayland1988

      Exactly botw was an interesting idea but the franchise is sacrificing way to much core zelda elements for generic open world gameplay mechanics

  • @thedalekditto15

    Understandable opinions (especially for Totk) in a nicely produced video.
    I think the divine beasts are not as horribly designed as people sometimes say, and the temples are a notable improvement, but still really miss the mark that the earlier games always hit.
    I deeply disagree with almost every point the over world of botw is fantastic in its environments and story. Botw is a rushed game through and through.
    I think Totk improves on almost everything, the world is one of the most full worlds ever made you just are allowed to ignore and if you do yeah of course it will feel empty.
    I think Totk is not perfect and has major flaws. And I’m worried that they will try to go bigger for the next game when I want them to make maybe even a smaller but still open world so the development time can be on each thing, instead of pumping out an endless list of things
    The ocarina to majoras mask comparison hyped up by fans was wrong, and Totk has a much more hopeful tone. The world is fuller, and yes the threat may be bigger than before, but you can face it together. The way it implements that tone is very flawed but the way the towns quest lines go make that rock solid and clear to me. I think the building is divisive for good reason, it’s a system that will feel empty and shallow for many that it doesn’t click with, but it clicked with me and made me feel like an awesome mad scientist in how I could solve problems. I I find it annoying that the temples and shrines didn’t have more Barriers to simple cheese, as you may have powerful abilities but restricting the player at times can be awesome, look at eventide island in botw. I think if you are on the lookout for what the world does have you’ll find there are things to do everywhere (some areas of the world this applies to different levels)
    I as someone with some experience in 3D modeling and rendering(not that you have non, that’s obvious from the vid)it doesn’t take less horsepower to do the cell shading graphic in botw than not doing it, it certainly doesn’t improve game performance if you take it away, as mods can do. I think this art direction is incredible and at time simplistic but in a majestic way, even if it has some bad looking moments. I don’t want them to keep this style, one of my favorite things about Zelda is how the style changes so much not as a gradual evolution but in great risks all with strong art direction.
    I think from my experience that this video does feel like you didn’t “play its game” per se, and as that’s not something you like , that makes sense, but it does mean you ignore a lot of the greatest things and moments of the game, as not as many as maybe there should be are a part of the main story.
    The only thing I think is an unreasonable opinion, even if it’s more commonly held than some of yours is that it’s the most overpriced dlc ever made. I would say Totk has about 3x the amount of total content and botw, not counting korok seeds which are dumb in importation in both games. It is built on the same foundation, but unlike majoras mask instead of taking a bold new direction tried to build the tallest skyscraper they could on that foundation. Taking the elevator doesn’t do justice to all the building contains, but when the interior looks similar it’s easy to underestimate it.
    I think both games are deeply deeply flawed in ways that need considering in future games if they want to walk this path, but are also remarkable in what they did beyond any open world game of their time each game, even if that magic is lost as those things bleed into the open world games surrounding them.
    Sorry this is so long but I have a lot of thoughts about this. I really like this vid and want it to succeed and to see what you make next, as much as I disagree with your opinions on what is obviously important series to both of us. See you next time you decide to make something!

    I will not lie to you, you're the first person I've heard not like BotW and TotK's art style, so I was a bit taken aback by it. That being said in my opinion it's Zelda's weakest art style so far, it feels like a downgrade of Skyward Sword's. Btw you ain't wrong about Totk not being an edgy game like MM was, the game makes you think it's going to be that with you finding living zombie-looking Ganondorf but nope most of the game is not that kinda of tone.

    I’m sorry but I feel like the idea that totk is a “$70 dlc” is just crazy. Nintendo added so much original content and new mechanics to the game and gave some old content a little upgrade. It takes HOURS to beat the whole game (unless you’re a speedrunner lol) and that’s not even including all the side quests and stuff. Even if a lot of the content has flaws (I personally didn’t like the side quests in either game), the overall amount of content solidifies this game as a true sequel and not some dlc to me.

      The UI is nearly the same. They're puling the same trick with setting the story in the past observeable through memories again even though it doesn't fit here, most music tracks are reused, most armor is the same (they're giving you the same exact armor in the four regions and dlc armor in the depths), you have to find korok seeds again some even hiding in the same spots, some quests like the one with the cricket/frogs in Hateno are copy pasted, the shrines still look all identical, the dungeons have the same 4-5 terminal system and I could go on and on. And the two new maps are repetitive and boring. It should be very obvious why many people feel its DLC.
