I love worm "flies".. Idk why some fly fisherman look down on them. Maybe its the simplicity of the "fly" or the effectiveness (almost like cheating), but they are a very natural, abudant food source that make up a huge part of almost every fresh water fish. Ive never seen any fly fisherman call out someone over a Dave's hopper, or a streamer even though those arent immatating a fly. BUT they are a harder pattern to tie, and generally a harder fly to fish. I just like to catch fish on what theyre biting best :)
I have always wanted to try fly fishing. This week i have taken the plunge and bought a rod and reel. I am looking for some good spots to learn around Barrie. Other than the Nottawassauga River, could you recommend any spots for a beginner? Still water fishing for perch on Simcoe comes to mind but id like to try some river fishing as well . thanks in advance for your response.
Definitely try the perch and smallmouth bass on Simcoe with a fly. Lots of streams and rivers in your area for using a fly. The Ganaraska River, Mad River, etc....so many. Recommend you go to a fly shop like Drift Outfitters in Toronto. Watch this video to learn more with the owner and about the shop. Great shop with good advice: th-cam.com/video/vlLntprAm_k/w-d-xo.html

Ryan do you use split shot with a worm? And throw it up stream? I struggle with how I throw it , up stream do I strip line in to keep slack out?
