It's January 2022 and I'm watching this super clear video! Wow! I handmade 1 of those tooling tools you showed and plan to do do the other one this week. I'm self training on embossing copper and soldering, which I will incorporate on my handmade copper/brass jewelry.
My Mother would work with several sheets of newspaper underneath the copper foil. Her tools looked the same but were wooden. She would fill the backside with clay. But I like the suggestion below to use plaster. Although she sometimes used paint, other times she used a liquid, not paint, that she would rub on and rub off. The longer it was left on the copper the darker it would get. She made a beautiful copper tooling of The Last Supper.
I recently got into this kinda stuff. Was looking up pagan/folklore coloring books on google and pintrest for ideas on what to sketch onto my foil! Thanks much for posting
Not that we know of. The soft nature of the foil is permanently pliable. You could possibly frame it in a shadow frame, which will have the depth needed to hold an embossed piece of foil.
Im sure you found out by now, but for future readers of your comment... so to fill the back Ive seen people use beeswax, just melt it and drizzle it in the voids, or what I like to use is modeling paste, use a palette knife and fill it in, or you can use plaster of Paris, or even some air dry modeling clay. Hope this helps.
Hello Rima, to add a frame, it is similar to the way the rest of the image was sculpted. You just need to raise or lower the areas by pressing with the same tools.
I'm not really sure I understand your question. The tooling foil is thick / sturdy enough to keep its shape once you've embossed it. Pushing from the back, it makes things stand up; pushing from the front, it makes lasting indentations. Does this help?
Some artists use melted beeswax to fill in, I use texture paste. I do pieces like these in mixed media and don't want them to dent back in when I mount them. Hope this helps.
Hi Sonja, it's actually 38-gauge (0.004") soft bright aluminum decorator foil with one side silver and the other side "copper". It can be found here: www.unitednow.com/product/6110/st-louis-crafts-two-tone-decorator-tooling-foil.aspx

I'd love to try this. Nice project!
Marvellous! Thanks for ur generous sharing.
WOWWWWW Sir, this is really really awesome !!!
Excellent!
Thanks for this. Is there a way to “preserve” embossing - like a way to fill in from behind to protect against accidental bumping, etc?

From some of the videos I have watched they have used melted bee's wax to fill in the empty spaces so they don't get crushed.
fill the back side with plaster
My Mother used clay. I like the comment that suggests plaster.

Wonderful work !
Hello
Please tell me: what is the thickness of this foil?
It's 38-gauge (0.004") - found here: www.unitednow.com/st-louis-crafts-two-tone-decorator-tooling-foil
from where you got golden foil
I got some from dickblick.com, but you can also find some at Hobby Lobby, and misterart.com. I'm pretty sure you could find some at art stores.
links no longer work? Where can I find the sun template?
Sorry, we'll get that link fixed. It's here: www.unitednow.com/renaissance-sun-tooling-foil-project-176
You can find the template in Step 1
@@UnitedArtAndEd Thanks for your prompt response!!
How did you make the edges of the frame around the sun?
Hello Rima, to add a frame, it is similar to the way the rest of the image was sculpted. You just need to raise or lower the areas by pressing with the same tools.
Brilliant, thank you!
whats up
Right, but how do u fill the embossed spaces under??

Nice...and I liked the music, too...the song and artist, please !
Very nice
You will dull your scissors fast if you use them to cut foil
aww, with the mention of a "resist" i thought you were going to etch it or something.
