      Yeah, he did really good for his first time, especially when fighting a guy who had like 13 fights.
      That's not the caliber of opponent the vast majority of first timers would take on. My first mma fight was against a guy with 2 amateur fights. Props to Jesse for going big right out the gate. I wouldn't have taken a fight against someone that much more experienced than I. Jesse doesn't lack courage, I can say that.
      I hope he fights again. Maybe he can come train with you, Ramsey.

    I'm just a huge fan of Jesse's humble and positive outlook on everything. He comes into every video smiling and learning and growing. He's respectful of others and never talking down and it's just an uplifting and encouraging thing to watch in a sea of extreme hype and negativity elsewhere.

    To me, as a father, the most enjoyable thing to see was the warmth and camaraderie of the two brothers working together. Of course, the martial side of the video pleased me too much but the real stuff was in human interaction. Congrats for the great job!

    I like how this guy just seems to appreciate all the different aspects from different martial arts that might seem or feel foreign to karate and instead of just making an excuse or something he truly seems intrigued and fascinated about the art/science behind them and wants to understand them as best as he can.

      Absolutely, it takes a lot of courage to go into a MMA real fight. Your opponnet did not punch you too much, but it could perfectly have been the scenario, and if he was very experienced in that it could have been very painful. This is so brave. Also your opponent looked super muscled up, very strong.

      That’s an interesting thought though, Karate combat is much like mma in some ways but has indeed a ton more connection to the traditional arts than ufc/bellatore/pride do.. Of course that’s always the matter of an individual, but just curious to see how would the techniques of an experienced Karateka shine there.. p.s. Oss !       I know, right. The other guy had more cage experience, was a pretty good pressure fighter and clearly knew who Jesse was and didn't wanna take a high profile L to a YT creator with an audience. Considering that, I think Jesse performed amazingly. His composure and recovery were great, I literally cheered at some of those get-ups.

    I had absolutely zero interest in martial arts, I primarily started following your channel out of curiosity regarding history and original Okinawan karate.       Don't even think twice about it, and do it!
      I started Karate about 1 year ago mainly because of Jesse Enkamp, Sensei Seth, Sensei Yusuke (Karate Dojo Waku), My MA Journey, and Ramsey Dewey. Now, I am healthier, more energetic, lost at least 30 pounds of weight, my flexibility is much better, and my overall fitness is way overall better! Plus I have gained some real technique - open hand and with Kobudo weapons.

    You're such a humble dude. In my years of BJJ I met some of the least egotistical people I've ever met in my life. When it comes to fighting one would assume it is the opposite, and sure you have your outliers, but it is such an amazing community overall. Everything about this video proves that.

In this match, it seems that you relied mainly on kicks to hit your opponent, but he kept dodging or stepping away from them, or taking you to the ground.     10:48 That is a terrific mount escape ! The bridging is remarkable and destabilizing of your opponent, excellent ! I honestly thought the fight would end there with ground-and-pound but wow, a terrific defense there. That is far from easy

    Oliver seems like a great coach, since his experience in the field helped you a lot, and it was amazing you performed as well as you did, you should do more like these cause I can tell youre really improving drastically, just be careful of injuries tho

The courage you showed by entering the MMA arena with so little training shows that you were one of those whom U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt spoke long ago on April 23, 1910 in a speech at the Sorbonne in Paris popularly known as "The Man In The Arena".       That's a great quote. Teddy Roosevelt was awesome. He also boxed and sparred almost every week in the White House itself, and indeed he practiced Ju Jitsu, Judo and other martial arts, which he very much enjoyed. He spoke and wrote about the character-developing utilities of martial arts and of physical combat, as well as the exertion involved therein.

    Maximum respect for putting yourself through this Jesse. I love your respect for others, your work ethic and your willingness to try & learn new things. All martial artists should expand their skills in pressure tests like this. It should be a requirement for, say, 4th Dan of any style that you have to go and do something like this. Win, lose or draw the learning, experience and genuine effort is the important thing.

This one has a lot of “soul” while others such as Karate Nerd in Okinawa series have so much research value in them, everyone is also entertaining but in different ways. But this one wins because of the fighting spirit and the courage in searching for personal development in such a challenging environment!

    Super impressive Jesse. I know you had an earlier MMA experience but it's fun having this one on video. Honestly I think your Karate skills were tested and they held up as being legit. As you talked about grappling is just such a different world, different strategy, different conditioning, different movements. So it's a lot to try to counter grappling which isn't the primary focus of Karate.
    Just getting in there takes a ton of cajones.

    Hey Jesse. This was incredibly enlightening for me. I'm going to be fighting my first MMA fight June 20th. Fortunately I have had a lot more than 30 days to prepare myself for the grappling and even found a renewed sense of wonder and discovery through the exploration of it. As another karate practitioner looking to test my skills against other types of fighters this gave me much food for thought.
    Update: It looks like I'm not going to be able to fight June 20th after all. I got to go to court to settle a property dispute that may well end up with my family and I getting evicted. I did sustain a minor rib injury as well but nothing I couldn't push through if that was the only thing going on in my life. And it wasn't looking too promising because Petey Vital, my coach was still waiting to hear from the promotion if they even found a suitable opponent. I'm pretty bummed out but I've been a lifelong martial artist so I am used to life changing my path and I keep walking it, to whatever end. I am obviously disappointed though.

    Jesse, I have so much respect for you right now. Thanks for sharing this with all of us. I am no MMA fighter but wanted to make a comment maybe you and Oliver talked about. One of the key take aways from this match in my opinion is the natural intensity of techniques when transitioning to point fighting into contact fighting. It teaches very different body mechanics. When watching your techniques, to me it’s obvious that out of respect, you wanted to “tag” your opponent but not hurt them. Your kicks seemed more for precision rather than for injuring your opponent, which is exactly to kind of thing we train normally on dojo so we can all go home and return the next day, right? I’d say, and this may sound super weird, but do an experiment with yourself on heavy bag next time and allow yourself to have a controlled “anger” about your techniques and work on delivering some kicks with both power And point sparring precision. I’m my experience, it is a total different mindset that I feel a lot of us daily karateka practioners lack because we practice self control and not to injure our sparring partners intentionally.

      I can agree to this mind set too. If you train in muay thai, they literary teach you to kick and punch through the bag/opponent which is something I never learnt in Karate

      This is very obvious, indeed, when looking at the video. It's the "not training for actually doing damage" thing. It's something which is clearly visible in the very first fight of the guys that did just light sparring all their training. And it goes away with experience and doing more hard sparring here and there.
      Dutch style training (not sparring, as that can be really damaging) could help as well.

      Exactly my point of view - Jesse you are so incredibly brave. Never turn away, always go ahead, don't be afraid. But your techniques could have more determination to really want to hit the opponent. The heart of the warrior is missing a bit. You are too nice! My sensei is very nice: in private - only in kumite, he flips a switch and wants to defeat me! I've never been able to do that and always wanted to be a nice playmate... you are to friendly in the Ring !!! But you are fantastic !

    Nice job man! You did a lot better than I was expecting out of your first fight. You had good scrambles and better submission threats than I thought a karate guy was gonna have. For your first fight it was really impressive, and if you keep training I can see you doing really well!

    Im really impressed with this. Imagine if you had more time for your takedown defense training, you would've been able to use ur karate much more. Also considering the fact that your opponent was much more experienced and more aggressive (due to the fact that he is trying to make a career out of mma) yet u were able to still perform that well is blowing my mind. This video greatly visualizes how the studying of your takedown defense as well as little bit of grappling can help you transition and use Karate in MMA. Really impressed. I just imagine what would happen if you had more time training the defense and more experience.

    Don't think i've every really appreciated how good of physical shape you keep in. It shows here. 2 minutes of being in a real grapple is enough to make a common person hyperventilate. You did amazing Jesse!

    Wow Jesse your brave!! 30 days of training for this MMA fight. The grappling aspect alone, like your brother knows is a whole different set of tools and ability, that takes time. I think you did well and will take away a perspective and understanding that can improve your art overall, sometimes the real win is what you gain from an experience. Hope your healing up well.

    It was really good experience. It proves that karate it´s very effective when you focus your training for fight. Remember, Jesse trained for only 4 weeks before the real fight and he keep up during 3 rounds, it´s really impressive!

    I went to a Shidokan grading as an outside opponent. It was interesting to fight out of my comfort zone, but a cage fight is a whole different level. Great respect to you. Well done

      They let people from outside their system participate in sparring at gradings? How do they keep "Charlie Zellenoff" out? Or is that part of it? We're usually worn out before the sparring starts and fighting fresh opponents.

      @@theflamingone8729 A friend of mine Sensei Steve Fenwick is a Shidokan instructor, he trained in our little club for several years when living in our town. He invited me down to London as a sparring partner for the graders. Strong fighters, although only one direction - forward. Which gave me an advantage as I was happy to fight on the retreat, which confused them as all the fighters seemed to push forward.

    What you did here is so courageous I don't even have words for it. MAD respect Jesse. Should you fight again? If it were up to me I would quite selfishly say yes, because I enjoyed this whole experience. It seems like you did as well, and I think that's what is most important. If you had fun doing it, then I say YES! Fight again! You literally fought a guy who had 13 fights and held your own bro. If you DO fight again, hopefully you end up fighting with a guy who wants to stand a little more, it's hard for you to show case your skills against a wrestler. I will say that your ability to get up and back to your feet during your scrambles is extremely surprising, you don't usually see that with people who don't fight so that's VERY impressive. I think what people can take away from this experience is that all too often we are focused on the outcome, rather than the experience. It never mattered if you won this fight, or if you lost it Jesse, what matters is you took yourself out of your comfort zone, and stepped up. =)

    I think that's what makes MMA special. It's that it's not so much really taking every style and incorporating it into a mixed martial arts style. But rather in all reality you're basically taking every style that you learned in your arsenal and creating your own style centered around mixing the martial arts into your personal style. And the style on how you specifically fight.

    I’d love to see you take on a more striking-oriented mma fighter, while you build a stronger ground game/takedown defense. I’m a lifelong shotokan practitioner, and have been doing American kickboxing since the age of 16 (I’m 29 now) I train with a couple of wrestlers and BJJ guys, mostly to learn their grappling and to teach them some of my striking, and together, we make each other more complete fighters. Still, though, I will rarely go for a takedown or a submission when we spar, since it isn’t as natural of a feeling for me as striking, but the defense and reflexes I’ve developed help me to stay up and defend many more takedown attempts, allowing me to set up my strikes after scrambles

    I can't say enough good things about Jesse's humility, positive mental attitude, growth mindset - just his life long student mentality. His physical discipline is something to admire as well, but above that, his ability to learn a lesson and find joy in his experiences is something truly special.     We have distorted image about what is possible in a real fight.

      También influye que perdió fuerza en los brazos y como bien dice su hermano necesita los brazos para fintear y lanzar las patadas , sin los brazos las patadas son telegráfiadas .
      Otro tema es el grappling , que es sumamente desgastante si no estás acostumbrado a la contracción simétrica continua , ello te drena toda la energía y se dificulta sacar golpes a velocidad .

    I'm wondering if Oliver will ever make the full time jump to being a coach....I think he'd be successful training fighters. His IQ and patience seem exemplary for the role as well as gameplans for upcoming fights or even breakdowns for future growth. The work he's done with Rokas made a noticable improvement with the way he fights... Like everything he already made large improvements on, went thru even more fine tuning. It's hard to explain but there's a noticable difference in his MMA ability from before working with him to after, and it didn't seem like it was a lot, but I couldn't say for sure there

    Man I trained karate in my younger years and got into BJJ and MMA training in my 30’s, it’s hard to compare the two.
