It's not that they go for big downforce, it's just that they go at such a low speed that they need to have a large surface with an aggressive angle of attack to have some downforce that will make a difference (low Reynolds number aerodynamic). We have the advantage of not really worrying about aero (unless Cal Poly's aero kit catches on) and engine (standardized kohler engine), but we have many of the same problems as FSAE. The university seems to hate student teams and has been funding us less and less while our ambitions keep growing. And it's not just funding they're shorting us on. I joined this year Cairo University formula team as a business planning member and I would like to know more about the main points I should focus on during the year to make the best of it
Build your social media, engagement with your university and faculty, outreach to sponsors for in-kind goods or services or cash. Having a good business team is just as crucial to build a strong team.
I'm assuming Formula Student is another term for Formula SAE (that's what me and my Baja friends call it anyways). My school has two student teams for SAE: Baja and Formula. Only the prior actually makes time to get into the shop and put together a vehicle, so I naturally joined them to spice up my resume. I'm not really that big of a car guy, but the skills used to get this whole project moving on the ground and being able to take a beating on rough terrain are what some companies are looking for. Regardless, I'm sure every SAE CDS (Collegiate Design Series) grants a world of opportunities to students who participate and put real effort into their project(s).
@@TheMotorMouthPodcast I competed for two years, some teams receive sponsors from massive company’s such as kingspan and redbull bwt etc. The competition has grown my interest in formula 1, I am from Ireland and it’s really popular here, Irish teams have won the world finals only once before but have been runners up many times. But as a result from this competition, formula student teams from universities all over Ireland are often texting f1 in schools members offering them a place on the team.
@@TheMotorMouthPodcast I highly recommend this video explaining it but I would also love to see an analysis by you of this competition, it truly is amazing and extremely difficult and time consuming but has encouraged me to pursue engineering th-cam.com/video/ftyv5KFEZ9A/w-d-xo.html
There's also Baja SAE, my university partakes in it but not formula. I'm not sure how much formula costs, but I'm pretty sure that Baja is much more affordable. I think the car we're building this year should cost $9-10k.
Ah yes, a classic love hate relationship :) By now i kind of hoped I'll be able to quit it, but as it seems it will be a 6th year inside formula student for me after this season wraps up... Still hoping on working in motorsports some day
So I recently found out about this form my principle and he explained how he went to a in university texas and did this and then later went into motorcycle racing
sadly my university recently axed their formula student team and denied letting it become a society :( does mean we are joining a cheaper racing league with an actual race calendar which should be interesting though :)
because you need a specialised workshop to work and manufacture all the pieces of the car from scratch which most schools dont have money for, and you need to be an engineer to actually make a proper race car in the first place. Im a mechanical engineering student from Swansea formula student and were always using heavy precision machinery to work with carbon fibre etc
I’m I Australia but would still like to know going into uni for the first time next year how do i know what Universities are still doing formula student because I know some have done it in previous years but is there any way of knowing which one will still be doing it next year before I pick my uni
Which college would you say has the best formula Student and best chances at getting into the industry? Asking so that I can choose my college accordingly......
Don't pick a uni based on a team. You can join a team that hasn't performed well/smaller and be way more involved in more aspects of the team. Your individual performance within the team is what counts on your CV
I Wanta Join a Formula Student Team but the Thing is What College and there is Clearly Big Teams and Small Teams making The Harder to get into College Schools Win the The Event for that Reason but The Small Teams can Think out of the Box for Sure
Hi this is Tanusha I am really inspired by ur videos and awesome content. I'm not sure if this question is relevant, but I just wanted to ask After my Bachelor's in Visual communication, what master's should I take to get into F1 . And any top colleges for suggestions. I would be glad to hear an answer and it would be beneficial for my career. I really appreciate any help you can provide.
I got accepted to Hertfordshire and Oxford brookes I really want to do this formula student, has anyone done it before especially in one of these universities?
Hi i am working on a complete new formula student team. And i design the suspension. My question is. Where does your suspension sit on ? The wishbone or the uprights. I know i am a competitor, but our team is a totally new team (because og Corona) so we are not a strong competitor
Not entirely sure what you mean but the wheel is held in place by bearings in the upright. The upright is attached to the wishbones. Vertical suspension travel is done by applying load to the pushrods/pullrods which are in some way attached to the shocks, so effectively the car sits on these. Suspension design isn't simple. Read race car vehicle dynamics by Milliken and Milliken
My college takes part in it. Or at least used to I think. Didn't make the cut as I was more interested in driving but I am too old to start driving either so......fk my life lol :D
If Formula Student isn't hosted anywhere in the country, can we work with Formula Student and our university to bring the Formula Student competition to the institution? Like we would form a team within a club in the university, and contact Formula Student to let us participate.
Yes. You can form a formula student club in your university. If you want participate in the Events with your car, you need to follow the rules. Most of the european Events mostly use the Formula Student Germany rules. Also the Handbook of each event says some things you have to keep in mind. Formula Student is the racing category. If you want to participate in the Events in Europe, you can register your Team at the Formula Student Germany site, I think.
Hello everyone!! I recently found out about Formula Student and I want to start a team at my school, IE University! Any tips or advice? What are some good places to look for money from aside from my school?
That's awesome!! In terms of funding, sponsors are your way forward. If you have the resources to start a team that can compete then start reaching out to companies to sponsor! The best ones to aim for are Motorsport component manufacturers 👍
Even combustion engine car teams need ECE major students, electric throttle control, CAN data logging, wire harness design, and manufacturing, active aero control...

Absolutely! Wasn't aware it was actually a thing 🙌
Thx for this, video's great
Thanks for watching! 🙌
There's also Baja SAE, my university partakes in it but not formula. I'm not sure how much formula costs, but I'm pretty sure that Baja is much more affordable. I think the car we're building this year should cost $9-10k.
Ah I see, that's interesting. Wasn't aware of that!
Ah yes, a classic love hate relationship :)
By now i kind of hoped I'll be able to quit it, but as it seems it will be a 6th year inside formula student for me after this season wraps up...
Still hoping on working in motorsports some day
Hahah same here 👍
So I recently found out about this form my principle and he explained how he went to a in university texas and did this and then later went into motorcycle racing
It's brilliant!!
Since I study biology and I know shit about physics, but I still want to get involved with FS,I'll choose to be the driver if possible.
It doesn't matter what you study it's all about getting involved 👍 and to be driver you generally need some raving experience too
Doctor
sadly my university recently axed their formula student team and denied letting it become a society :(
does mean we are joining a cheaper racing league with an actual race calendar which should be interesting though :)
Which country & university name?
Why is it only universities taking part and not including trade schools, secondary schools, adult education centres and similar institutions?
because you need a specialised workshop to work and manufacture all the pieces of the car from scratch which most schools dont have money for, and you need to be an engineer to actually make a proper race car in the first place.
There should be information on the university's pages but you can always contact them directly 👍
Which college would you say has the best formula Student and best chances at getting into the industry? Asking so that I can choose my college accordingly......
I think we may be a bit biased ;)
ETH Zürich are always pretty strong
Don't pick a uni based on a team. You can join a team that hasn't performed well/smaller and be way more involved in more aspects of the team. Your individual performance within the team is what counts on your CV
what is the annual budget of such an operation?
It varies uni to uni, can be as little as a few thousand or as much as $1 million
I Wanta Join a Formula Student Team but the Thing is What College and there is Clearly Big Teams and Small Teams making The Harder to get into College Schools Win the The Event for that Reason but The Small Teams can Think out of the Box for Sure
Send me a message on @theracingluke Instagram and I'll be more than happy to help!
Hi this is Tanusha
I am really inspired by ur videos and awesome content.
I'm not sure if this question is relevant, but I just wanted to ask
After my Bachelor's in Visual communication, what master's should I take to get into F1 . And any top colleges for suggestions.
I would be glad to hear an answer and it would be beneficial for my career.
I really appreciate any help you can provide.
I got accepted to Hertfordshire and Oxford brookes I really want to do this formula student, has anyone done it before especially in one of these universities?
I haven't myself but I know Oxford Brookes are very good at Formula Student so that would be a good choice!
@@TheMotorMouthPodcast they are my main offer at the moment just need to get the grades for the end of the yesr
As an economic student, I can relate
Absolutely, formula student is amazing
3:22 thats my university lol
Go UGRacing (University of Glasgow) overall winners of Formula Student UK 2022
Congrats to them 👏👏👏
Hi i am working on a complete new formula student team.
Hahaha well being an F1 driver certainly ain't easy!
im gonna sign up to formula student once im of age.
Definitely recommend it! 👍
Yes, do it!
what courses would I have to take to be able to get involved in this
Any course, it's open to all students 👍
Is a better team better for the own career?
@@TheMotorMouthPodcast Thank you so much for the response!! I will be looking into that ASAP
What about Baja SAE?
Which one are you referring to?
@@TheMotorMouthPodcast What do you mean?
@@TheMotorMouthPodcast He means Offroad-Buggy SAE basically. It's not so common in middle-europe.
Doesn't cambridge have formula student?
They certainly do 🙌
Can someone in Electronic and Electrical Engineering specialize in this?
Or do this?
From what I remember, some teams only run electrical cars and are desperately looking for electrical students, so you might be a good fit.
@@crosscategory thanks for this.
Just got accepted (recieved an offer) to Southampton and I might try formula student out.
Even combustion engine car teams need ECE major students, electric throttle control, CAN data logging, wire harness design, and manufacturing, active aero control...
Can you race if your not in uni
Do students design and build formula student cars?
next achivement - going bath uni for only one reason xd
Hahaha good choice!
I used formula student driverless to get into the autonomous vehicle industry.
Absolutely, it's brilliant for loads of career paths 👍
How can i become a formula 1 driver?
Sadly, it takes lots and lots and lots of money nowadays 👍
how much does a formula student season cost ?
I'll have to get back to you on that one! Send a message on @theracingluke and I'll get back to you 👍
@@TheMotorMouthPodcast OK thank you
entry to the event is £1800 per team for FSUK, with cars ranging from £10,000 to over £5 million.
@@anonymousperson7861 ok I see
@@anonymousperson7861 thank you
Funny how you make a video about Formula Student and your entire comment section is instantly filled by students already competing.
Hahaha I know right!
is it faster than f1
It's sadly not, but very quick!
The Formula Student car still faster than the Mclaren
McLaren got a podium in Imola... I think you mean Mercedes 😂

Formula Student. I had a chance to study in PSG College India🇮🇳 which comes under the formula Student list. 😭😔 I am studying BE Computer science in a reputed college do I still have a chance to work in any motorsport.plz respond.🙏
Of course! Whilst Formula Student is a great place to get started, it isn't the only way in. If you could demonstrate an interest in motorsport through other extracurricular activities that would be a great way to help with job applications and interviews

Students either in the team or at least undergraduates at the university!
You forgot to mention the University of Aberdeen and the University Glasgow who have recently been outperforming some of the universities you mentioned
Apologies for that 👍
@@TheMotorMouthPodcast can you make a video on F1 in School Championship coz it is there and is official F1 sponsered event but never mentioned.
I myself wanted to enroll in it but funding is so important and in India it is difficult so hoping that I get a work in such Formula student and thanks for reminding me there was another way to get into F1. I forgot about it since 2018
This comment aged very well indeed - Glasgow won :)
Not one African event...I know we're poor but South Africans surely have money and can participate...especially the Boers...I'm sure Stellenbosch or an equivalent can come up with the funds to do this...we keep losing our best cos the world doesn't believe in us and it's frustrating...
100% agree, hopefully it's something that will come soon!
How much downforce are we going to include in the Formula?
All of it!!!
Absolutely 😂
lol my school is on there😅
Hahah nice!
Too much technical crap with the events just make it like an F1 weekend
The point of Formula Student is education not entertainment 👍
Sounds like a load of BS to me
