If you want to get a character past the earliest levels with very little effort and very little attention to the game while it’s happening, this is one of the most efficient ways to do it. All the character needs is a little seed money (Get it? Seed money?). The character will end up with a tidy amount of extra gold by vendoring the farming (and cooking) products. Getting to Level 20 is very fast and Level 50 takes some time but is doable. If you just want to boost a character to a certain level so it can join one of your friends at that level or to earn some Destiny Points (200 per level-up past 10), this is the way to do it.
I'm pretty sure the sound affect used when purchasing an item from the vendor is the same sound affect used in the 2003 Hobbit game when you purchase items and upgrades at the end of each level! In previous versions of the game did you ever need to wait for the crops to grow? Those large fields and the grown crops showing up on the mini map make it feel like you once planted crops and had to visit them later to harvest. Would have been a nice mechanic if you could wait longer and get a larger yield.
