Nebraska was a power house is those Tommie Frazier days. That's when college football was college football. I couldn't wait to watch Cornhuskers play in Saturdays..I hope they turn that program around it's ashame the kids these days don't know how great the school was in those times.
Rozier was the most physical and punishing runner I ever saw. A guy who wore Mike's number #30 many years after him the late Dahrran Deidrick who passed sadly away from cancer earlier this year was vastly underrated. And he played for years in Canada. Even winning 3 Gray cups. If Dederick had a better Senior year, he would be remembered much more fondly. Looking back at his highlights he was a tremendous back.

LP, Mike Rozier, Mr. Green, Mr. Jones, Mr. Dubose and Ameer. We really missed Doug Dubose in ‘86. Might of had enough fire power to finish against OU with him that day in Lincoln. My favorite offensive players Rozier & Frazier. Favorite defensive players Farley and Wistrom. So many great ones though.
Andra franklin played 4 years in the mid 70's and his first carry for negative yards was in the oklahoma game of his senior season. Roger Craig? Tom Rathman? Jeff Kinney? Jarvis Red wine? IM Hipp? Johnny Rogers (played I-Back in the 73 orange bowl--5 touchdowns that day including 1 throwing). A lot of great players & history here. Impossible to narrow it down to 5.
LP coulda woulda shoulda been an NFL hall of famer. Trully one of the best to ever play the game. Lots of lessons to be learned from him on throwing your life away. Such a sorrowful life with a tragic end. What a shame

Short memory on this list. If you want to go for impact on a team and take into consideration and performance in games that mattered, I would not put Calvin Jones or Abdullah on the list at all. I also would not include Philips because of the pain in the neck he was for the 95 team. My list would be 1- Rozier, 2- Green, 3- Jeff Kinney because well he made the win in the Game of the Century against Oklahoma possible on the last drive, 4- Roger Craig, 5- a tie of I. M. Hipp and Redwine.

Yeah, Rick Berns ran for an incredible 255 yards against Missouri in 1978 and Nebraska still lost the game. Cost them a sure shot at the National Championship. Berns was really tall, like 6'3. It is very difficult to find much footage of IM Hipp. I wish there was more available.
I'm posting this on the eve of what might be the end or death of any hope we at Nebraska who know that the Men in these video clips above represent the TRUE NEBRASKA IDENTITY ...ITS WHO WE ARE AS A STATE AND PEOPLE. Tough, not afraid, and willing to do the hard work of being a RUN FIRST football team. This identity has always been what we were known for far and wide. People today say that this type offense just won't work in today's fast paced air it out pro style game. The trouble with this is EVERYBODY and I mean EVERYBODY IN EVERY CONFERENCE as a majority run the Pro Style offense....and the trouble with that is there are only so many of those top pro type players available for all those teams and Nebraska is already at a disadvantage because let's face it Nebraska and our surrounding states are not a hot bed of 5* talent ! So Tom Osborne figured out years ago that to be able to compete we had to create our own identity and run a offense that no one else was running and go out and identify and GET the players that were born to excell in a Triple Option Run Based Offense and it took years of building relationships with thousands of high school and Jr. college coaches that would help us find these type kids and the relationships flourished because we took care of their kids and kept our promises. Not only that but we encouraged big farm and ranch kids from our area to walk on and we had coaches that worked with these kids and turned them into some of the best Linemen to ever play college and NFL football...yes some were 5th yr Seniors but they came in young green kids and left with a degree in their hands and a legitimate shot to play in the NFL. Sadly what hurts the most is a Nebraska Kid, A Cornhusker Quarterback who led his team to a shared National Championship is now the very guy who is going to throw the final shovels full of dirt on our once proud football tradition. He was hired as a Head Coach because everyone thought he would return us to what we all know Nebraska HAS GOT TO BE IF WE EVER HAD HOPES OF BEING GREAT ONCE AGAIN....BUT NO... HE PUT HIS JOB ABOVE WHAT WAS BEST FOR US, THE GUY WHO RAN A TRIPLE OPTION OFFENSE TO OUR LAST NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP NO LESS IS PUTTING HIS OWN PERSONAL FEELINGS AND WANTS ABOVE WHAT HE HAS TO KNOW IS BEST AND OUR TRUE IDENTITY ! It's been tried 2 times recently and failed badly costing us many years of being laughed at, Mocked and the butt of all sorts of jokes but the bottom line is we can't compete for the type of players it takes to run and be successful that Pro Type offense...so not even proof will convince him....and that my friends is very sad. oviedol55 absolutely. However, Osborne/Devanny let him play I back in the 72/73 orange bowl... it was Devanny and Rogers last game. He was the MVP of the Orange bowl and it was a lot of fun to watch. Also, Rogers did not have an exceptionally quick first step and he wasn’t overly fast. However, Osborne said he could run as fast backwards as forwards. He was an amazingly deceptive punt returner and the scariest guy in the open field.
Phillips could have been the best running back in history if he could have stayed out of trouble. Such a waste of talent. He was huge and could run inside or outside and run your ass over. Osborne being the good man that he is tried to guide him. Sad all the way around
it really isn't about the running back, it is the O Line....you take any 5 of those running backs and let them play the last 5 years and they have little to no production.

How in hell is Roger Craig not on this list. None of the guys you have on this list could carry his jock scrap. He’s one of top three football players Nebraska history. Others being Ndumikan Sue and Bob Brown. Put those three in whatever order you like. Until recently he was the man in the NFL to have a thousand yards rushing and receiving in the same season. And he did it playing fullback. Fullback. (You know that position you’re not supposed to be able to do that from.)

If you read the title of the post, however, it says 5 best Nebraska running backs. This implies those who had the best careers at Nebraska, not the best pros. Craig had a great career in the NFL. There were a lot of Niners players during that era who had great careers. In this particular comparison, though, Rozier had a pretty solid pro career as well. His one healthy year in the USFL found him finishing second in rushing to Herschel Walker, a decent back. The majority of his NFL career was spent with a lot of subpar Oilers teams. Compare NFL numbers. Craig made 4 Pro Bowls in 11 seasons (36%). Rozier 2 in 7(29%). Each averaged about 50 yds/game. Craig averaged 4.1/carry vs Rozier 3.8/carry. Now, remember that when viewing the NFL statistics, Craig played for a team that won almost 75% of its games, 3 Super Bowls, and never less than 10 games in a season. Rozier played for a team that won around 45% of its games and whose best season was 10 wins. Remove Rozier’s statistics from the two years the Oilers went 5 - 11 and his NFL rushing stats are pretty much the same as Craig’s. If you want to argue that Craig was the better back, go ahead. He was NOT better at Nebraska and was not significantly statistically better as a pro. Rozier is still Nebraska’s leading rusher by yardage though playing only 3 seasons. He won numerous awards, including the Heisman. His career at Nebraska was good enough that he was the second overall pick of the NFL draft. With that said, you think that saying Rozier couldn’t carry Craig’s jockstrap makes sense?
San Francisco was loaded at the time and there only so many touches Roger was going to get. Roger accomplishments came while playing fullback most of time and he’s the first guy run and catch for over a thousand yards and it’s only been done once or twice since. Roger played at Nebraska at time in college football where you simply waited your turn. Nebraska USC and others were always stacked at tailback. But having said all that I get your point.

Knox was very talented. However, he had his shot and wasn't able to beat out Ken Clark. They were both in the same recruiting class in 1985.Clark doesn't get the credit he deserves.
Hey Jeff, I agree Clark did not get his just do but Reese did not get a shot because of a lack of talent and will leave history to judge. That's cool. Tyreese had great speed and strength, but wasn't as fluid and nifty as Clark. Tom tried to put them both in the same backfield at time using Knox as a Full-Back, but that didn't really last long. He had tried the same thing with Roger Craig. Wanted to get him and Rozier in the game at the same time. Roger struggled with a bunch of injuries, chiefly a bad knee as a Senior in '82 and Rozier just took over. Roger came in though the second half against Hawaii after Mike went wasn't able to play due to an ankle sprain and had one of the best games of his career. @@andrewinters6079
No Roger Craig? Admittedly, Mike Rozier sucked all of the air out of Memorial Stadium, but once in the Pros with the 49ers Criag showed that he was the second best I back NU ever had. With a much better career than Rozier who ended at NU injured and then stated right in the pros with out rest with (NewJersy Generals?) and never again attained his peek form. My list would start with Green and or Craig and go from there. As far as total careers go I would throw some love to some fulbacks who had better total careers than many of our I backs...IE Tom Rathman. Just saying.
Here is a name that you may not know. Glenn Presnell. Listen to this, in 1927 his senior year, Presnell supposedly ran for an incredible 1,443 yards in just 8 games! Don't remember how many Touchdowns they said he had? He is a member of the Nebraska Football Hall of fame. Inducted in 1973. Now in 1927, the football itself was much bigger. There were no facemasks and blocking with arms outstretched was illegal. It's mind bending that the guy could have run for that many yards.
Abdula should not have been on this short of a list. Johnny Rodgers and Rodger Craig are BOTH better than Abdula. And Green would have to come off of a list this short. they both could be on a top seven or top ten list tho

Isahia Hipp had an amazing Sophomore year in 1977. Alas his next two season were injury plagued. Hipp was an incredible athlete. As strong as they come. Whopping 350 pound bench press, 900 pound hip sled. That's right 900 pounds! He was the first Nebraska back ever to run under 4.4 at 4.39. Started out having a great senior season in 7, then suffered the turf toe injury and was never the same. He was the MVP though of the Aloha Bowl All Star game after his senior season. I'd really like to see highlights of that game. Really any highlights of Hipp at Nebraska are pretty scarce as well. Would be great to see someone upload them. Alas, home VCR's were still pretty new in 77-79. Most people couldn't afford them.

Phillips could have been the best running back in history if he could have stayed out of trouble. Such a waste of talent. He was huge and could run inside or outside and run your ass over. Osborne being the good man that he is tried to guide him. Sad all the way around

How in hell is Roger Craig not on this list. None of the guys you have on this list could carry his jock scrap. He’s one of top three football players Nebraska history. Others being Ndumikan Sue and Bob Brown. Put those three in whatever order you like. Until recently he was the man in the NFL to have a thousand yards rushing and receiving in the same season. And he did it playing fullback. Fullback. (You know that position you’re not supposed to be able to do that from.)
Interesting comment considering that he played behind Rozier.
I am talking nothing away from Craig. He was a great player at Nebraska and was even better for the Niners.

If you read the title of the post, however, it says 5 best Nebraska running backs. This implies those who had the best careers at Nebraska, not the best pros.
Craig had a great career in the NFL. There were a lot of Niners players during that era who had great careers.
In this particular comparison, though, Rozier had a pretty solid pro career as well. His one healthy year in the USFL found him finishing second in rushing to Herschel Walker, a decent back. The majority of his NFL career was spent with a lot of subpar Oilers teams.
Compare NFL numbers. Craig made 4 Pro Bowls in 11 seasons (36%). Rozier 2 in 7(29%). Each averaged about 50 yds/game. Craig averaged 4.1/carry vs Rozier 3.8/carry.
Now, remember that when viewing the NFL statistics, Craig played for a team that won almost 75% of its games, 3 Super Bowls, and never less than 10 games in a season. Rozier played for a team that won around 45% of its games and whose best season was 10 wins. Remove Rozier’s statistics from the two years the Oilers went 5 - 11 and his NFL rushing stats are pretty much the same as Craig’s.
If you want to argue that Craig was the better back, go ahead. He was NOT better at Nebraska and was not significantly statistically better as a pro.
Rozier is still Nebraska’s leading rusher by yardage though playing only 3 seasons. He won numerous awards, including the Heisman. His career at Nebraska was good enough that he was the second overall pick of the NFL draft.
With that said, you think that saying Rozier couldn’t carry Craig’s jockstrap makes sense?
San Francisco was loaded at the time and there only so many touches Roger was going to get. Roger accomplishments came while playing fullback most of time and he’s the first guy run and catch for over a thousand yards and it’s only been done once or twice since. Roger played at Nebraska at time in college football where you simply waited your turn. Nebraska USC and others were always stacked at tailback. But having said all that I get your point.
How the hell is Lawrence Phillips not # 1?? He's arguably the best RB to come through Nebraska. He's #1 in my book.

Knox was very talented. However, he had his shot and wasn't able to beat out Ken Clark. They were both in the same recruiting class in 1985.Clark doesn't get the credit he deserves.
Hey Jeff, I agree Clark did not get his just do but Reese did not get a shot because of a lack of talent and will leave history to judge. But the depth was insane with Jones, Knox and Clark all on the same 80's squad following Debose, Rozier, Craig etc. Nonetheless iBacks at Nebraska are legendary and this is coming from a U Almuni.@@jeffreyk5734

That's cool. Tyreese had great speed and strength, but wasn't as fluid and nifty as Clark. Tom tried to put them both in the same backfield at time using Knox as a Full-Back, but that didn't really last long. He had tried the same thing with Roger Craig. Wanted to get him and Rozier in the game at the same time. Roger struggled with a bunch of injuries, chiefly a bad knee as a Senior in '82 and Rozier just took over. Roger came in though the second half against Hawaii after Mike went wasn't able to play due to an ankle sprain and had one of the best games of his career. @@andrewinters6079
No Roger Craig? Admittedly, Mike Rozier sucked all of the air out of Memorial Stadium, but once in the Pros with the 49ers Criag showed that he was the second best I back NU ever had. With a much better career than Rozier who ended at NU injured and then stated right in the pros with out rest with (NewJersy Generals?) and never again attained his peek form. My list would start with Green and or Craig and go from there. As far as total careers go I would throw some love to some fulbacks who had better total careers than many of our I backs...IE Tom Rathman. Just saying.

Here is a name that you may not know. Glenn Presnell. Listen to this, in 1927 his senior year, Presnell supposedly ran for an incredible 1,443 yards in just 8 games! Don't remember how many Touchdowns they said he had? He is a member of the Nebraska Football Hall of fame. Inducted in 1973. Now in 1927, the football itself was much bigger. There were no facemasks and blocking with arms outstretched was illegal. It's mind bending that the guy could have run for that many yards.

Isahia Hipp had an amazing Sophomore year in 1977. Alas his next two season were injury plagued. Hipp was an incredible athlete. As strong as they come. Whopping 350 pound bench press, 900 pound hip sled. That's right 900 pounds! He was the first Nebraska back ever to run under 4.4 at 4.39. Started out having a great senior season in 7, then suffered the turf toe injury and was never the same. He was the MVP though of the Aloha Bowl All Star game after his senior season. I'd really like to see highlights of that game. Really any highlights of Hipp at Nebraska are pretty scarce as well. Would be great to see someone upload them. Alas, home VCR's were still pretty new in 77-79. Most people couldn't afford them.

Calvin Jones is not even in the top 10. Shame including him! Ken Clark, for starters, was better. So was Derek Brown.
Clark was definitely tougher than Jones. Very physical runner and great cutting ability. Brown had some pretty good games with the New Orleans Saints.
