I'd argue the reference to Romeo and Juliet in The Sharpest Lives is actually NOT referring to it as love. It's such a dark message and specifically mentions how Juliet loves "the lust it commands". It's a much more accurate representation of what the play is about than people people portray.

    • @Kerslayer
      @Kerslayer หลายเดือนก่อน +11

Yeah I agree, I think it’s referencing people giving in to dangerous desires rather than anything about love.

Exactly. It's about a toxic relationship. He's in the throes of addiction and she hates it, as much as she loves him. He's a monster and he knows it.

i’m the opposite… as someone with periodic depression i always found that emo music made me feel more connected. knowing that i wasn’t alone in how i felt made me feel like things were going to be okay 💜 also Ray Toro and Frank Iero are one of the best guitar duos in music.

This is one of the few albums I will listen to in order. Not just the songs but the flow they chose with song selection is perfection. This will also be close to my heart because this came out right around the time I was diagnosed with epilepsy. It helped me get through the grief of my old life ending and my new one starting.

As another epilepsy diagnosis from around the same time, I resonate with this sentiment quite a bit. The album was pretty remarkable for coping, and has been for dealing with several losses since.

I am an older (54) lover of this album. For me, I Don't Love You, took a while to kick in for me.
My sons became fans of the band and due to their constantly playing it, I grew familiar with it. Eventually I learned all of the lore behind the concept album. I love a good story.
The best description that I heard of the song is that it is sung from the perspective of the dying patient. His girlfriend can't handle the fact that he is sick and dying. She decided to break up with him. This obviously make him angry. Basically saying, you loved me yesterday, why not today?
The last line, for me, says it the best. He even sings it through gritted teeth trying to hold back his anger.
"When you go, would you have the GUTS to say, I don't love you, like I loved you yesterday DAY?!?!?!?!"

Honestly, seen multiple occasions of people downplaying/dissing this song. I love the emotion Gerard taps into paired with the slower tempo. The song’s lyrics aren’t too cryptic, and I like the story it tells. I always lose myself in it and I feel it stands above most other rock ballads.

LOVE that you're reacting to this album! Soooo much nostalgia. The impact this record had on alt music both then and now can't be emphasised enough. I think this is one of the last albums of its time to have such an impact on a generation, it's so big that even people who don't listen to this kind of music have at least heard of it 🤘

Loved watching this reaction! I appreciate the thoughts on the lyrics and recognition of all the influences in the music. There's a lot of nostalgia and old school rock sounds packed into this album. MCR did an amazing job of mixing it in with their own unique, fresh style. House of Wolves is one of my top MCR songs and not a lot of reactors get it the way you did.

Legitimately one of my favourite albums of all time. I don't skip a single song when I play it. And as a 17 year old emo kid when it was released it really just dominated those formative years for me. I still get all the same feelings I got nearly 20 years ago every time I load it up.

This album came out in the year I turned 18 and my last year of high school (we finish in the year we turn 18 in South Africa) and the release of The Black Parade came off a back of quite a few years of solid obsession with Blink 182, Sum 41, Green Day, The Offspring, Garbage, and Good Charlotte a bit later.
I would also say that NY Chemical Romance is probably also closer to alt rock/emo than Green Day's pop punk rock opera, American Idiot was, so I fully agree with you in that sense Nathan.
This album is still very close to my heart and I highly recommend personal watching of the music videos for I Don't Love You especially (very visually cool/new for the time it came out) and the music video for The Black Parade was also striking if I remember correctly 😊
Enjoying the reaction as always, thanks guys 😊

I like music as long as it's done well, no matter the genre. Even though I lean towards the heavier side of MCR, I can appreciate songs like I don't love you because I grew up listening to ballads from bands like Bon Jovi and Aerosmith.
Yes, that riff in "House of Wolves" is definitely a homage to "Detroit rock city". "The end" was also heavily inspired by David Bowie's "Five years".

There is something about the rhythm of it that also just makes me tear up.
It just ticks ALL of my emo boxes 😂

    • @macmcgee5116

I Don't Love You took a while to grow on me. It really wasn't until I watched a video by Windigoon where he kind of put all the songs in order of how he felt the story would play out. He broke down the lyrics and I finally understood.
I never paid that much attention to the lyrics and thought it was merely a breakup song.
Wendigoon's translation of the album, may or may not be 100% what Gerard intended, but if his version was ever to be made into a stage musical. I would definitely be there to see it. If I had the skill and know how to make something like that happen, I would be working on a proof of concept and trying to see if I could get the band on board.

  • @darkangel102860

While i like the more heavy songs on the album, I would never skip "I dont love you" on a full listen through. It definitely moves the story/concept forward. If I was just listening casually. I probably would XD. Ngl I wonder if yall have absorbed the full story of The Patient or if youll expand on your thoughts on it as you listen to part 2. Theres so many different ways to interpret the TBP, and its pretty poetic/metaphorical at parts which is wonderful to dig your teeth in but maybe hard to piece together on the first reaction/listen through.
10/10 reaction so far, I adore people reacting to TBP and its a super refreshing take to watch two friends react to the album together.

Great reaction, however one point I’d like to make. You keep bringing up this “genre” of rock opera. Rock opera isn’t really a genre, it’s a formula for an album… for example; “Tommy” by The Who, “Bat Out of Hell” by Meat Loaf, “American Idiot” by Green Day, then this album. All rock operas in their formula, all very different genres in the true sense of the word.

    Omg Nathannnnn!!!!!!
"House of Wolves" is suuuuper underrated imo!!!!!!
When people rank the songs of the album in order its usually bottom tier. Which is a travesty I tell you!!!! A insult to this amazing bop!!!!!!
If you asked me what my top songs off the first half of the album theyd have to be.
    The Sharpest Lives
    How I Disappear
    House of Wolves
I knooooow its super sacrilege to not put "The Black Parade" in my top songs. Its just that while I can appriciate what it does for the concept/story it just doesnt click with me. Different strokes for different folks I guess :)))

  • @emmavink
    @emmavink 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Thank fk Nathan finally said it 😂 I fully agree, Romeo and Juliet is absolutely NOT a love story. And it's my least favourite Shakespeare play alongside The Two Gentlemen of Verona 😂
It definitely is a story about the consequences of child/teen neglect 😂😭 and over the top teen hormones. And generations of bias confirmation.
I would suggest that it is a play about Romance though. Not the sugary Hallmark kind. The precursor to goth, death cult, sadness, heartbreak wallowing, lust-confused-for-love, rebellion, hedonism...that kind of romance.
I feel like MCR gets closer to the accuracy of it than most modern readings of the story do.

I like your reactions overall. I mean this in a constructive way, not a mean way, but please stop giggling if at all possible. I don't think inside jokes or references to things that happened earlier or just laughing usually come across the same to the audience as to the people reacting, recording, etc. That's my personal opinion obviously, and again I don't mean to just gratuitously pick on you. Maybe all the other listeners are fine with it. But it almost made me turn it off even though I like your channel and I'm a big fan of the album.
