We don't disturb or inspect the turtle until after she has laid her eggs and noticed this just as she was about to return to the water. With the limited tools we had at hand the biology team removed the hook and sent her on her way. If the hook had been left in her mouth it could have caused eating problems and a serious infection. The benefits far outweighed the risk of leaving the hook in place. Thank you for your comments.

Glad they got the hook out.. and take care of them. Deep sea hooks like that are supposed to be made of special steel. They do rust and disolve away quite fast in salt water.
I've just watched a vid by 'Sea Turtle Biologist', they removed a plastic straw from a turtles nose. Comments were disabled so here I am watching another tragety. The pain shown by these little creatures is shown on their faces and body movements, sand on the tears. People need to know this, what's happening out there everyday! You don't need a straw for ya drink. 'Say No To Plastic'.

Turtles do not cry when they experience physicals pain. Those tears are a way of cleaning and hydrating their eyes
