Fix Canon Printer Error 168A Install Cartridge Properly Clear Message Troubleshooting MX490 MX492

  • My Canon Pixma MX492 printer showed an error code 168a which means that there is a problem reading the ink cartridge correctly. In my case I had tape which was not removed when installing new cartridge and that may also be your printer's case, but there may be other factors which can prevent the cartrodge to be read properly. Best and first things to do is to clean the contacts and remove any objects such as tape or anything at all that may be interfering with contacts.

    Just FYI - you MUST install BOTH cartridges. At first I was just trying to replace the black and leaving the color empty. It kept giving me this error until I saw a comment below that said yes, you must install both. Even the stupid Canon website doesn't say that. But now mine works. Hope this helps!

    After cleaning both cartridge and you still have the same error more likely one of the cartridges has dried out I would recommend replacing both cartridges

    im having the same problem, my cartridges are only about 6-7 months old but I havent used it for 3-4 months and now says to insert the black cartridge correctly, but my cartridges are clean, I dont really fancy spending £30 on 1 cartridge and it still do the same error

      Remove the cartridge, turn printer off then on, clean the contacts area om the cartridge and insert cartridge back into printer. That may help.

    I just picked up a used one and its giving me the 168A error code. This used printer only came with a color cartridge but not a black cartridge. Do I need to have and install BOTH cartridges for this to work? I cant seem to get around it. Both needed??

      @@susanhurst3292 I got the ink cartridge that was missing. I haven't been able to install and move this process forward yet. I will get it done this week and let you know if this was the wall I needed to break through. I'm hoping this is it.

    Make sure you have color and black ink cartridge installed was my solution, it won’t work if you have only one. Which is stupid…

    I do all the steps on this video and gives me the same error?
    UPDATE:
    THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED. I ASKED GOOGLE WHAT TO DO AND LET ME KNOW TO PRESS AND HOLD DOWN THE STOP BUTTON FOR 5 SECONDS TO DISACTIVATE THE "INK MALFUNCTION" STATUS. IT WORKED! :)

      One of the cartridges is bad or the connections on the pinter have tape or ink blocking the connection.

      @@303electronics I actually fixed It. The arm where the printer cartridges were held was stuck. The issue was someone put in the color cartridge in wrong so it couldn't move. I ended up taking the printer apart and pulling it out (i tried to reposition it from what was visible but the angle was wierd. ) It's working now at least I got the scanner part and errors to go away. I haven't tried printing anything

      Hi. I'm not sure, but do not think so. I know HP printers with dual ink cartridge system allow to function with color cartridge, but not sure about black only. Doubt it.

      Got it work when i boguht both inks.. one original and the other is not. Then the printer said that the inks were empty, but i solved it by ptessing the cancel button for few seconds

      @@elleon_pro , I think toner cartridges were mixed meaning that a color printer will have 4 cartridges and somehow one or few were put into wrong slot.

    What if the ink cartridge is to the right and won’t move

      In this printer, you can try manually moving the carriage unit that hold ink to. Unplug the printer, move the ink carriage to the center, remove ink, shine light into printer to see if t anything is out of place or if there is jammed paper or other object. If all is good, close the cartridge door, turn on the printer and then install ink cartridge. One at a time.

      From what I understand, the cartridge carrier does not slide over to the middle after you open the door? If that's the case, check the sensor tab for the door, it may be broken or jammed and therefore, is not sending the command to the printer that the door is open. You can first try opening the door, make sure printer is on, and tap on the printer's front area to see if the tab for the door sensor releases. Let me know how that goes. Thanks.
