the uglies....we all go through it. BUT on the bright side your hair is looking amazing! thanks for the update it's always nice to see what going on with fellow reefers :)
I have the same dino as you. I have been fighting it for the last 6 months. What's working for me for the last 2 weeks is increase of flow, weekly dosing live rock enhance for additional beneficial bacteria, feeding heavier to keep my nitrates above 10 and phosphates at or above . 1 and daily dosing Phyto Feast! I'm using multiple fronts to overcome dinos.

A would install the UV! , also changing filter floss or socks faster and check of your lights intensity. If you keep your nutrients high it will eventually go, good luck.
You like the melanarus as I did when I got mine. He’s a bully now and anything added especially clean up crew gets munched. Keep an eye on him as he grows. I need to move mine on but easier said then done catching him. Fingers crossed yours stays a model citizen 🤞🏻 As for the dinos you need to get it under a microscope if you haven’t as you’re guessing how to treat it if not. Acro in a new system is a brave move too. I sound like a right downer but I’m just trying to help 🤣
Thank you and handy thing to work for TMC as I have the option to take to work and they can take care of it when it’s too big for my tanK or if it becomes boisterous haha Yeah I’ve had it under the microscope 🔬 so got a diagnosis now and it’s getting much better now thank you It was haha but it moved over from the other tank with me the acro ☺️
@@Colettesmarinetank working for TMC must definitely have its perks if you’re in the hobby! Let me know if any part time jobs come about 🤣👍🏻 Glad you’re getting to the bottom of the dinos. Touch wood, somehow, I’ve never come across them yet.

I turned on my aquarium 1 March 2022 so I think we are about at the same stage. Dino dusting, a bit of green slime, but steadily improving. I do very little to force it along, only vacuuming the rock of the worst when I do the weekly water change. Had some red cyanobacteria this week but its coming out easily and not growing back quickly. I changed the resin cartridge on the RODI machine and I think that helped. I used 11 years of experience and patience on this aquarium start-up (letting it be) and I am being rewarded with amazing coral growth on the acropora. I just returned from refilling my coffee and found the Dimidiatus dead on the Tunze pump. He went in 2 days ago perfect and yesterday it had a significant wound on the abdomen. Perhaps it tried to sleep in a pump nozzle?
Only Non-photosynthetic species of dinoflagellates feed of diatoms. You’ll know if your dino is photosynthetic when it gets worse when your lights are on and tend to fade slightly when the lights are off. The only way to know what type of dino you have is to get it under a microscope. UV is one of the best method of tackling dino when the dino is in the water column. Regularly blasting the rocks and sand so that it goes into the water column so that the UV can kill it. Another great method is to siphon your sand into a 80 micron filter sock to capture the dinos. Other method will be to out compete it with phyto or silicate and if you don’t mind go down the chemical route like using dino x.
Thank you very much yes it’s definitely photosynthetic as it increases when the lights are on I have been upping my nutrients and it seems to be getting a little better appreciate it I’ll install the UV soon then I’ll
I’ve had dino’s on a few tanks over the years and found increasing water changes while removing as much as you can during each one works pretty well. Might take a month or so depending on how often you do it but they will eventually just vanish. This can happen naturally too over time but that’s what I’ve done. They feed of diatoms so basically once you get past that stage they will die off
CoOoOoL.... Are the uglys really ugly? Nice to see a tank going through its stages instead of picture perfect Instagram falafel. looking forward to seeing your tank mature. keep up the good work! PYSGOD
Hey... I heard some dinos are toxic both to corals and fishes. Don't know how to identify ones. And do you normally have a tank lid on, because fish will jump out sometimes.
Hi Colette, Dino's or not the tank still looks great. I've only been in the hobby a few months but before I did I done a fair bit of research into possible algae outbreaks during the fiirst year of a new tank and how to tackle them. The best advice I came across was from BRStv, they have a whole playlist called the five minute guide which you may have heard of but 1 of the episodes is dedicated to Dino's. Their theory is that it comes from a tank being too clean organically from ultra low nitrates and phosphates. The very first thing they recommend is installing UV. They also mention lifting nutrients using NeoNitro or NeoPhos then dosing beneficial bacteria like Dr Tims waste away or Vibrant which outcompete nuisance algae like Dino's. I would definitely attack this full on rather than going down the natural route as it may destroy all your precious corals before it disappears. Hope it works out for you soon. (breezy_reefer)
some nice corals in the tank unfortunately it takes time and patience when doing marine tanks doing regular water changes and testing regular will definitely pay off in the long run .Good water flow protein skimmer and phosphate reactor will benefit your tank and the corals and fish will thrive .you will definitely see the rewards for all your hard work and effort .
I take it you have joined macks reef dino group on Facebook and also have an ID on which type of dino you have? I believe UV only works on one type of dino
Wow!!!! Dinos | Ciano ... you have so much. your tank is not balanced, the water you replenish is very important be good quality 0 TDS. The dinos are big problem

I dosed with bacteria & carbon dosed , worked wonders & was better than using chemicals. Look forward to seeing the tank in 4 weeks time

Carbon dosing is One of the things that causes dinos

Dino's , install one UV
Thank you ☺️
Dr Tim's refresh and waste away to get rid of it. I would hate to see you lose your corals
