DELL Precision 7770 CTO overheating after 60 minutes use

  • Today I ran a few benchmarks on my brand new DELL Precision 7770 CTO laptop:
    - CompuBench
    - Cinebench
    - Superposition (2017)
After only 60 minutes use, the DELL Precision 7770 CTO laptop became so hot that I could barely touch it.
Even more: when it got so hot, severe thermal throtteling barged in, and the DELL Precision 7770 CTO slowed down so much in order for the device not to catch fire that some of the benchmarks were rendered with about 10 fps!! In my video you can see the resulting ragged rendering at 2'33".
I have no doubt: it won't be safe to leave this machine unattended while its running, e.g. when its rendering a 3D scene or animation or doing some other hardware intensive stuff, like running one or two virtual machines.
This is just THE SECOND TIME that I've been using this laptop. The first time I launched my new DELL Precision 7770 CTO laptop, it broke after only 30 minutes use (see • DELL Precision 7770 CT... ). Last week, a DELL technician came by, repaired it and, while doing so, he told me that it suffered from a power surge. He also told me that this incident was a common issue with new DELL notebooks. Makes me wonder …
Another issue is the laptop's keyboard: There's plenty of free space for a full keyboard. My former DELL XPS 1730 and DELL Precision M6700 all came with a full keyboard. But the DELL Precision 7770 CTO comes with a keyboard having all navigation keys shrunk or double-assigned to other keys. HOME/END, for example, are put as Fn-Option on the F11/F12 keys. As a programmer, I need all of them all day, everywhere; e.g., while riding on a train or sitting in a small hotel room. This keyboard is an imposition! What's going on in those DELL hardware developer's minds?!?
NB: The teaser thumbnail of this video is a dramatization, insinuating that the DELL Precision 7770 CTO actually caught fire. Well, it didn't … yet.
    My verdict:
DELL Precision 7770 CTO is a poorly designed piece of hardware.
Mine was manufactured end of November 2022. Perhaps my device is revision 1.0? - Nonetheless: who at DELL approves such poor design and gives clearance to sell this piece of … metal?? 😣
The power supply, cooling architecture and chassis just do not suffice the stunning hardware implemented:
    - Intel Core i9-12950HX
    - NVIDIA RTX A5500
    - 128 GB RAM
    - 1 * 512 GB SSD
    - 2 * 4 TB SSD
DELL, I'm very disappointed of this laptop's tech design and your chutzpah to sell this to the public.

The Dell Precision 7770 has some issues that Dell are aware of but I'm not sure how seriously they're being taken. For example, the chassis is slimmed down from previous versions thereby reducing its cooling capacity. A casual user may not notice anything wrong but a serious player should. The thermal throttling kicks in even after just launching the search bar which frankly is ridiculous. I will definitely not consider upgrading my 7510 for one of these.

Use Honeywell PTM7950 replacing the thermal conductive paste. Make undervolting CPU and GPU at -100mV or more if it will be stable. Probably a cooling pad would be useful as well. After these steps it should have less thermal throttling and be cooler.

You should always elevate the back of Dell Precision laptops. I've had five of them and they're always bleeding edge machines with the highest spec mobile workstation gpu's that generate a tonne of heat. I have this one, the 7770, I've rendered with it for a sixteen hours and it was fine, thermals were normal with hwmonitor running. I have had previous precision laptops that need motherboards, gpu's, etc., replaced but the next business day on-site service tech has always solved problems like this one. You likely have a bad machine and that's all. It is throttled for thermal and power reasons though. Tech 3D has a good video on its performance compared to similar spec'd MSI system. Benchmarks are disappointing for it compared to MSI, no doubt about that. Value is relative though, since MSI doesn't offer the same enterprise level support.

Is it worth to buy this laptop in 2023 ?
