Honestly, I think they are making politicians look good which is very bad for the game. They are so concern about how to make money that they have forgotten how they go to be one of the biggest and best of the ccgs that existed and now they don't even care about the longevity of the game at all. I went from buying at least one box per set for years to barely even buying singles. It has been over a year since I bought a box of magic cards and the last few sets I think I have bought maybe four or five singles total because they are driving me from the game. I might look at lorcana myself especially if I can find players around me to play with. I have played Magic for over twenty years but I rarely find myself even wanting to go anywhere to play anymore. I might consider selling my collection and starting a new game like lorcana.

Distribution shenanigans, forced artificial scarcity, and over priced everything (40 minimum for a starter deck, 300 minimum for a box) It is not a solution to the problems you face with current mtg.

every wotc employee who watches this is going to shower twice to get the grease off their dirtneck to find some sleep at night. such an eye opening summary and as a retired L1 i can confirm the system is collapsing! i thought mtg is dying slowly, but reality is hasbro and wotc is doing everything to let it die rapidly in record time!
Only time will tell. The insane card pool for the game is a huge help in keeping me from playing other newer games like lorecana or marvel snap. If Disney stops funding for it before a dozen sets then the playerbase will just steadily drop with no-one new coming in like multiple other games within genres dominated by a big competetor that's been around much longer than everybody else.
In my thirst for knowledge I actually joined the JA some time ago, did everything that was free (up to, but excluding the LVL 1 test) and really thought about paying the 70 bucks and becoming a judge. With the recent development I'm glad that my "MTG-Burnout" kicked in first. Until now it would have been a nice trade off: pay 70 bucks, get a equally expensive promo back and maybe some money/product on the side from judging in the local stores/larger private events and so on. But without the expensive foil being a sure thing and all the disappointment coming from WotC/Hasbro, I don't think I'll walk that path anytime soon.
I noticed this too I actually left Yu-Gi-Oh about a decade ago because of that and that's how I got into Magic, but now I don't know, it might be time to move on to another TCG or another hobby all together.

Lorcana is looking fantastic so far, though they do need to resolve the low supply issue pronto! This game seems to have the most hype I've seen out of new TCGs in recent years. I hope they can live up to it with follow-on sets!
Remember, WotC had a record breaking fiscal year. Then raised their prices. They dont' care about anything other than their bottom line. Don't even disguise it like every other company.
So the reason they can't do this is that they'd have to pay a minimum wage (and benefits?) according to each State's minimum wage...so they don't want to do this obviously. Buy giving cardboard rectangles they evade all that stuff.

New players mostly play commander in little groups that are somewhat protected from the true meta game. Although, I suspect that many of those groups are in a slow arms race. If you improve your deck too much you get rule 0'ed. But as long as you are slow and steady you can keep improving powercreep.
As much as I agree that there are some really dumb decisions being made, primarily pricing and endless reprints, there's still a lot of people that love mtg and still get excited for the game. Channels like this one though focus almost exclusively on the negative. I like the channel and some of the content, but can only watch him so much before switching away. 🤷♂️

As soon as you want to be positive for a new set all of a sudden its priced 4x what it was normally priced. Then you get about a week to enjoy the new cards from a set then BAM another full set is out. It sucks because I really do live playing Commander. It used to be 4 standard sets per year and maybe 1 extra set which spaced the sets out enough that spoilers felt special. I have fond memories of calling my friends after work to discuss the new cards that were spoiled that day. Now, I barely look at spoilers. It use to feel special and exciting. I can't honestly tell you the last set that I was excited about because off all the releases every year has kind burned me out. Here is something Wizards should think about: When something is special or notable it can build a lot of hype/excitement, once that is lost then the hype/excitement is also lost. When sets were released with time between sets it always was exciting and felt cool to watch the game develop. Now, it seems like every single day of the year some new set is coming out so I have a hard time staying excited about the game anymore. I have play the game of Magic for over twenty years but the last two years I find myself not even wanting to go to my lgs to play that much anymore. Many of my friends who played the game have either stopped playing all together or not as often either. I have been debating for months now if I want to sell out of a game that has been a huge part of my life for so many years. Power creep has been ruining the game for me for a while Pauper commander feels like the only reasonable way to play the game anymore. Too many cards that are just entirely anti-fun keep making it into the game, while also being absurdly priced because of how game warping they are. One friend of mine made a Sheoldred the Apocalypse commander deck and it is absolutely miserable to play against.

I am so, so glad I didn't become a judge a few years ago. As soon as they said: "Well you need pay $100 and you get foils" I was out. The whole point was to _voluneteer_ and get rewarded with product that compensated me for the time I put in. I hope Lorcana kills it, it's super fun, flavourful and doing things the right way.
From the little bit of modern tournaments I've seen recently 95% of people aren't fully utilizing the card power properly as it is so idk how much the power creep even matters but its been a problem for a long time.
Those basic land arts are pretty nice to be fair, if wotc hadn't printed a billion varients of full art over the last 2 years they would be good hits. The island being gated is bonkers 😂
I think it needs to be noted that Lorcana is gonna get a boost from Disney collectors many of whom will buy anything with Disney characters on it. Mind i am not saying it isn't eating MTG's lunch but i felt the extra source of sales for Lorcana needed pointing out.
They used to even give judges foil reserved list reprints a long time ago. And as far as power creep goes, it also killed one of my favorite digital games in a way. Elder Scrolls Legends. That game had a card set that was so strong and OP that Bethesda canceled all future plans for the game and was like "we will keep the servers up but that's it." Before that it was a perfectly healthy and balanced game. I hope WOTC doesn't make that mistake with Magic.
I guess the judges needed an updated version of the previous lands lol. I knew it was suspicious when the promos earlier this year came out in a set of 5 instead of q1 and q2.
Damn this one was fire, just spitting facts all day long. WotC ain't about to give nothing out for free, sayonara judge academy. And yeah, I can't imagine anyone being surprised about Lorcana, and probably most other tcg's, seeing an upswing compared to Mtg, considering how poorly Mtg is managed. If WotC and Hasbro doesn't turn this ship around, there's nothing to save it. I'm hyped for Bloomburrow next year, but the risk is high it's just gonna be another Wilds of Eldraine story, and it's not looking better for other sets. I mean WotC didn't even bother printing the One Ring to an amazing standard, nor the recent foils they displayed. Give it a few more years of this, and it's over. There will come a point where people will just stop talking about it, because even if videos like these are fun to watch, there's a limit for how long it is funny to watch someone flip a sandwich and have it fall in their face. Other tcg's are bound to take over, at this current point. The sad thing is that it wouldn't take a whole lot for Hasbro and WotC to turn it around, but their greed is stopping them from doing so. And as for powercreep, at this rate we'll have Orcish master of Dark Holes in 2025, boardwipe your opponent and they take 10x the total amount of power of the creatures destroyed, also all their lands are to be cut up with a scissors, their deck will be burned and your opponent will be banished to the shadow realm. Jokes aside, an outright boardclear might be in the future at this point, just bouncing all your opponents cards back to their hand, if they are under X amount of power. Also I think people might've said your Lorcana stream was electric, due to the thunderstorm ya had passing over.

Tbh, after LOTR "During your turn, after you draw your second card, if you control a creature with 4 or more power, create a food token tapped. This triggers only once." stuff, gameplay-wise eldraine is sounding refreshing...playing commander I personally have a thing against staples and "mandatory" expensive cards BUT if you're willing to expend resources on a card, atleast make it go somewhere rather than "keeping spinning the wheel"...
I want them to make powercreep, buy in limited numbers, have this ultra unique powerful legal creatures, but there is only 4 in the entire world. Lets see how bad we can go
Disney is just as greedy as Hasbro, they are just better at managing their fanbase. If a card is powerful enough for them to change the future design to accommodate it, the card is broken and shouldn't have been printed.
Maybe they add ward 1 or 2 to creatures they want to promote. Not completely immune to bowmasters, but not completely invincible to bowmaster. Still powercreep but subtle.
Yeah, we don't need judges at tournaments. We'll just set up tournaments in the VIP room and then not show up to run the event so that people are just milling around doing nothing after giving us hundreds of dollars.
Magic in 2025: Judge promos: a pack of used and dirty penny sleeves. Game play be like: Turn 1 I play a land, cast Bragavan who is 10/10 double strike haste flying menace space monkey with "at the end of combat I hit you in the face". Opponent can either counter it or lose. Oh and you can have any number of Bragavans in your deck, just because. Games will be soooo much more fun than today!
I wait for an 25/25 Emrakul dude with Haste, Trample and Double Strike at cost 1 generic mana. Have to wait only a 2 or 3 years, looking to the tendency.
So glad Lorcana is doing well. It's gonna be the first time MTG gets serious competition from another soulless conglomerate and maybe, just maybe Hasbro will back down a bit on the anti consumer practices.
Lorcana is an interesting game, but the lack of complexity makes it feel less fun than Magic or Flesh and Blood. I played in a small tournament this evening. After winning the 2nd round, I got bored shook my opponents hand and said “Good game. I’m reporting that you won.” And dropped and played some Modern with a buddy of mine. I’ll probably keep a few decks to pull out and play every once in awhile, but I don’t think it’s interesting enough to keep my attention.
Power Creep isn't new at all. There's a reason people look at the staples from yesteryear and consider them impossible to use. A 4/4 flying, vigilance for 5? That's basically unplayable and has been for a long time.
I was talking to friends that we're likely cycling into another low period for tcgs and just table top games in general. We were likely headed for it with covid and it got buoyed by millenials hitting the point of higher income and a drop off of other leisure spending and a sudden halt to other expenses and looking for some form of entertainment that had a nostalgic connection to. But now the one two punch of that looming crash combined with hasbro trying to make line go up from the covid anomaly. Instead of circling the wagons they're just trying to speed run to the cliff. And I expect a down turn until people in their early 20s hit a similar age and have a hit of nostalgia remember all the craziness of covid and want to revisit some of those loves. Wotc has doubly fuxked themselves placing their bets in eternal and casual formats

Enough. There is more than adequate cards throughout Modern that can deal with Bowmasters. People just don't want new cards to have a power match with their OP cards from 20 years ago.

I'm really looking forward to the final fantasy set when that comes out but I'm literally sitting here wondering if they'll actually last that long. Haven't bought any mtg in a while but I know that if I can make some fun decks with that to play with my brother I'll be quite happy.
Im am really indifferent to FF bc i never played it, but i hate the thought of magic taking on everything else every half a year, and not Stick to its own lore more. I am really about so sell my ~8k collection and only play mtg as a draft of old sets or a cube. GG WP hasbro

Ravensburger makes excellent game components, so the fact that Lorcana's card quality is good should be no surprise to anyone.
I was a judge for several years, but refused to pay the “academy” just to keep judging as an L-1.

I think it needs to be noted that Lorcana is gonna get a boost from Disney collectors many of whom will buy anything with Disney characters on it. Mind i am not saying it isn't eating MTG's lunch but i felt the extra source of sales for Lorcana needed pointing out.

I still have about 2,000 cards meself. There's a small online community that still collects the old cards.
They used to even give judges foil reserved list reprints a long time ago. And as far as power creep goes, it also killed one of my favorite digital games in a way. Elder Scrolls Legends. That game had a card set that was so strong and OP that Bethesda canceled all future plans for the game and was like "we will keep the servers up but that's it." Before that it was a perfectly healthy and balanced game. I hope WOTC doesn't make that mistake with Magic.
I guess the judges needed an updated version of the previous lands lol. I knew it was suspicious when the promos earlier this year came out in a set of 5 instead of q1 and q2.
Damn this one was fire, just spitting facts all day long. WotC ain't about to give nothing out for free, sayonara judge academy. And yeah, I can't imagine anyone being surprised about Lorcana, and probably most other tcg's, seeing an upswing compared to Mtg, considering how poorly Mtg is managed. If WotC and Hasbro doesn't turn this ship around, there's nothing to save it.
I'm hyped for Bloomburrow next year, but the risk is high it's just gonna be another Wilds of Eldraine story, and it's not looking better for other sets. I mean WotC didn't even bother printing the One Ring to an amazing standard, nor the recent foils they displayed. Give it a few more years of this, and it's over. There will come a point where people will just stop talking about it, because even if videos like these are fun to watch, there's a limit for how long it is funny to watch someone flip a sandwich and have it fall in their face. Other tcg's are bound to take over, at this current point. The sad thing is that it wouldn't take a whole lot for Hasbro and WotC to turn it around, but their greed is stopping them from doing so.
And as for powercreep, at this rate we'll have Orcish master of Dark Holes in 2025, boardwipe your opponent and they take 10x the total amount of power of the creatures destroyed, also all their lands are to be cut up with a scissors, their deck will be burned and your opponent will be banished to the shadow realm. Jokes aside, an outright boardclear might be in the future at this point, just bouncing all your opponents cards back to their hand, if they are under X amount of power.
Also I think people might've said your Lorcana stream was electric, due to the thunderstorm ya had passing over.
Are sets not designed a long time in advance? How are they going to start designing 2-toughness creatures in response to a newly released card?

@@malakimphoros2164 Because it makes them money. Disney doesn’t like leaving possible profit on the table. With their financial actions as of late I have more faith in Hasbro management team. Yeah I could be completely wrong about this but I would say to just remember it is a strong possibility.

Tbh, after LOTR "During your turn, after you draw your second card, if you control a creature with 4 or more power, create a food token tapped. This triggers only once." stuff, gameplay-wise eldraine is sounding refreshing...playing commander I personally have a thing against staples and "mandatory" expensive cards BUT if you're willing to expend resources on a card, atleast make it go somewhere rather than "keeping spinning the wheel"...
I want them to make powercreep, buy in limited numbers, have this ultra unique powerful legal creatures, but there is only 4 in the entire world.

Maybe they add ward 1 or 2 to creatures they want to promote. Not completely immune to bowmasters, but not completely invincible to bowmaster. Still powercreep but subtle.
If magic the gathering didn’t have the depth of strategies it would already be dead to power creep.
Yeah, we don't need judges at tournaments. We'll just set up tournaments in the VIP room and then not show up to run the event so that people are just milling around doing nothing after giving us hundreds of dollars.

Magic in 2025: Judge promos: a pack of used and dirty penny sleeves. Game play be like: Turn 1 I play a land, cast Bragavan who is 10/10 double strike haste flying menace space monkey with "at the end of combat I hit you in the face". Opponent can either counter it or lose. Oh and you can have any number of Bragavans in your deck, just because. Games will be soooo much more fun than today!
Lorcana isn't bad. It's much simpler than magic but that's not a bad thing...

So glad Lorcana is doing well. It's gonna be the first time MTG gets serious competition from another soulless conglomerate and maybe, just maybe Hasbro will back down a bit on the anti consumer practices.
Lorcana is an interesting game, but the lack of complexity makes it feel less fun than Magic or Flesh and Blood. I played in a small tournament this evening. After winning the 2nd round, I got bored shook my opponents hand and said “Good game. I’m reporting that you won.” And dropped and played some Modern with a buddy of mine.
I’ll probably keep a few decks to pull out and play every once in awhile, but I don’t think it’s interesting enough to keep my attention.

Power Creep isn't new at all. There's a reason people look at the staples from yesteryear and consider them impossible to use. A 4/4 flying, vigilance for 5? That's basically unplayable and has been for a long time.

I was talking to friends that we're likely cycling into another low period for tcgs and just table top games in general. We were likely headed for it with covid and it got buoyed by millenials hitting the point of higher income and a drop off of other leisure spending and a sudden halt to other expenses and looking for some form of entertainment that had a nostalgic connection to. But now the one two punch of that looming crash combined with hasbro trying to make line go up from the covid anomaly. Instead of circling the wagons they're just trying to speed run to the cliff. And I expect a down turn until people in their early 20s hit a similar age and have a hit of nostalgia remember all the craziness of covid and want to revisit some of those loves. Wotc has doubly fuxked themselves placing their bets in eternal and casual formats
Pokemon TCG, Pandemic Legacy, Cascadia and new Dominion sets are proof that traditional games are doing fine and it's WotC being stupid.

Bowmasters hugely disincentivise X/1s to the point decks reliant on them become unviable. Same thing with Fury.
Enough. There is more than adequate cards throughout Modern that can deal with Bowmasters. People just don't want new cards to have a power match with their OP cards from 20 years ago.
I felt the same way about Ragavan, it just dies to removal like everything else. Stupidly expensive because people forget how to cast removal, I guess
