    Nick, In case you didn't read about it, I copied this from the back page of the Rocky Mountain Conservancy Quarterly magazine from about 5 years ago. I think it was an Autumn issue. This bear's hike reminded me of your Mummy Mania effort. "Late this summer, Trail Crew Leader Cameron Stark, who was working in the Boulderfield at the time, and Climbing Ranger Max Barlerin, who was in Chasm Meadows, observed a black bear as it came through the Keyhole from Glacier Gorge. They watched as it traversed the upper Boulder Field and headed towards Chasm View. It then traversed over to Camel Gully and descended to Chasm Lake, then went across Chasm Meadows onto the shoulder of Mount Meeker and continued on to the south. WOW!" That was one determined bear.

      Wow! Holy moly.. Id hate to be coming down Camel Gulch at the same time as a bear! Talk about nowhere to go.. but its amazing how fast they can traverse the land. Just mindblowing.. the very first time I did Longs I was sitting up at the shelter and there was a fox running around on the boulders below me. I sat there and watched him for a long time. Wish I would have been doing videos then. It was pretty awesome.

      @@Robin.ThePlantPath Anything is possible! A year ago I thought getting around Mummy Mania was totally impossible and pretty much accepted that I would never be able to do it.. then I got stronger and it looked somewhat possible.. then I just told myself I could do it and went for it. But now I want to do it again and get all 6 peaks. Maybe next year..

    Nick, you are one hard chargin' Mummy Killin' Maniac! I grew up in KC, and visited RMNP every year starting when I was age 4 in 1955. Most everyone favored Ypsilon but somehow Fairchild always intrigued me. I climbed it in 1968 with a few and hikemaster Kent Dannen, just prior to my senior year '69 in KC. I'm honored by my son who did Fairchild exactly 50 yrs later, Aug. 2018 and doing the rest of them. You have strong genes, my friend!

    • @nicksangetta8874
      @nicksangetta8874  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! This was by far the hardest hike I have ever done. The fear of dying alone in the dark kept me going! I want to do it again and primarily focus just on Fairchild then bail out down the saddle and hit the lakes on way out. But thats just a scary hike. How did you and your son do Fairchild? Did you do the mummy kill route or come up from Lawn Lake?

    • @tboltjohn
      @tboltjohn 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nicksangetta8874 Hi, Nick..my son and I did the CCY in 2013, but in 2018 he alone did Fairchild a half century after me. In '68 our group did the Lawn lake route starting about 3am. Kent my hikemaster then took us from Lawn to Crystal then up the Northside of Fairchild. Recall a bigger snowfield then near north summit, and likewise on the classical south summit. When it comes to Mummies, its a long haul. My son now works at the WSMR at White sands and has climbed in the Organ Mts. N.M., intense beauty there!

      @@tboltjohn Wow! He sounds like a hardcore hiker! Doing Fairchild from Lawn Lake is harder than the way I did it. Much harder actually.. book says from Lawn Lake it is 8.9 miles out with a 4,962' gain. Holy moly! Thats savage.

    Well done and another great video. Nice elk and bear sightings. Hagues and Mummy on are my to-do list. Got the other 4 over the years. I wonder if those shelters on top of Fairchild are the same ones we hid inside in August, 1973 on a very windy summit. Don't know if I have it left in me to get those done. But your Mom sure does! What a climber!

    • @nicksangetta8874

      Thank you. I also want to do Hagues and Mummy together. Start from the Lawn Lake TH and go up the saddle and loop it back down Mummy. But thats a hell of a hike. Hagues is tricky too. Then once your up there might as well get Rowe Peak too!

    Bro, I did Hagues today. It was a banger of a hike. I tried to take screenshots of your video, but I got way right on the scramble. I got myself into some class 3 stuff. Not my thing. I ended up summiting right in front of the registry. I went down towards Mummy. Long day, lots of big moose. That lawn lake trail is really well maintained. Happy hiking.

    I've watched this video half-dozen times. Every time I'm just amazed because it's really, really difficult. I've run into bears a couple of dozen times over the the years. One of them snarled at me once from on top of a rock because I surprised him, but I've really never had a problem with them. I can't speak for the bears in the rest of Colorado, but the ones iyou see hiking n RMNP don't seem to want anything to do with people. I just don't think we're on the menu. I've never heard of anyone actually being hurt by one in RMNP. Just give them their space and stay away from the moms with cubs and there's really nothing to worry about.

    Great hike! I did CCY in August, I want to do the full Mummy Mania. I need to just do it and stop making excuses. Maybe August 2019. That bear up there was crazy, I never would have expected that. About 10 years ago (I was later reminded it was actually 1996, see reply below) I was hiking up to Chiquita and before I got to the Chapin-Chiquita saddle a young bull moose passed across the trail in front of me going up the north slope of Chapin. I have no idea where it thought it was going.

    • @nicksangetta8874
      @nicksangetta8874  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol! Yeah nothing for moose at the top of Chapin! I wish I would have done the entire Mummy Mania but I was worried about getting back to Lawn Lake so I focused on that. If you are gonna do it just don't underestimate the time it takes. Good luck! I hope you get it!

      My mother, who did Chiquita and Ypsilon in August while I did CCY (she's in her 60s!!) reminded me that we saw the moose in 1996 (we were hiking Chiquita). Her memory is obviously still better than mine. She is pulling the prints (and maybe film) from that trip.

    The “ramp” that you describe below the summit of Hagues, do you follow it around to the left or the right to reach the summit? Also any other tips on how to negotiate that final push to the summit would be greatly appreciated! Love all your videos. You are my go to guy for navigating & conquering the peaks!

    Congrats on this one. I'm sure you were hurtin at the end of this. This one I can relate to because Chaquita was my first ever mtn summit in colorado before I lived there (th-cam.com/video/0ZblDccb91M/w-d-xo.html). And I later moved to Colorado and redid it as the full CCY. That is not super well tracked out beyond Ypsilon and I could see this being slow going.
    Your videos are inspiring though. I watched a ton of them and I plan to do mountains I didn't know were worth going to. Like your videos of every mtn surrounding longs - lady Washington, pagoda, and all those meeker hikes. Mummy kill is definitely on my hitlist as well.
