Im no fisherman so this is a real question. Other than hoping that your line wont break (assuming you are using a lower gauge string for big game), if the boat is going in the opposite direction of the marlin why struggle with it trying to pull him in right away l? Why not allow him to struggle against pull of the boat. Every few minute tighten the line until he's tired.

I grew up fishing in Hawaii. Once marlin break 200lbs. You have to shoot them or get gored by their beak!
