    The SL-1200/1210GR is not badly priced compared to what some others cost TODAY at TODAYS RATE of inflation. Because of the resurgence in vinyl, used SL-1200’s could be had for about $300. Not any more.Good luck with that! If you do find one at those prices they have most likely been schlepped back and forth to clubs and have physical signs of abuse. I just bought the 1210GR to replace my 1210mk2. Night and day difference in the sound...using the exact same cartridge. I sold my mint condition 1210mk2 with an Ortofon bronze cartridge to a friend for the steal of $550. He jumped on it! (He got a deal...it was MINT!). The prices on good used technics have gone up quite a bit in the past few years. If you find a great condition one reasonably priced, buy it! Otherwise, whip out your credit card and plunk down $1700 for the 1210GR...but you won’t be disappointed.

    At any rate, this is one of the few new turntables I would consider as replacement for one of my archiving decks.

    Technics is back! Love that classic model. My SL-D2 is still in perfect working conditions after 38 years. It costed me $250.00 back in 1980. So... prices are relatively standards according time. Let see how long this model will last.

  • @charlesludwig9173

    B & H is now selling these. They have them in stock. Considering free shipping and possibly no tax, it could be a really good deal, especially using a cash back credit card. I've been contemplating buying one of these since they were announced. I like the adjustable tonearm height feature, direct drive, s-shaped tonearm, adjustable feet, and removeable headshell. I also like that Ortofon has 2M series cartridges integrated with a headshell that provides for proper cartridge alignment with this turntable without fuss. At any rate, looking at pretty much every turntable out there for the last 2 years, as an upgrade from my 43 year old Sony PS-4750, it seems to me the SL-1200GR is awesome for the money.

    This must rate as another great TT package from Technics, the arm is pretty dam good in spite of what many have written and now the GR has many of the G updates within so must be considered a bargain . The G is a wonderful sounding deck and has ease of use to die for so to have the GR at roughly half the price and most of the performance is good fortune for all who have the wit to consider it.

    • @HiViNywschannel
      @HiViNywschannel 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Derek Woolston Derek, amongst the many happy users of the G in the U.K., what would you 1)think about the image perspective, soundstaging afforded by the G when compared to your superb Orbe? 2)some parity on the arm that Technics has made for your G? Thank you...
      Would like to hear frank opinions from you, a real G AND ORBE,Linn,Thorens,etc user!!!!! Your 40 years of experience please to help us.🖐😄🖑

      It was with some surprise that I found myself preferring the sound of the Technics SL1200G/AT33EV to my Orbe /SME309/AT33PGTMK2 . The soundstage and imaging certainly differs from the Orbe, it took me awhile to realise that the T deck produces a more realistic view of the venue , studio, jazz club or concert hall, be it more distant or to the fore. The Orbe initially seems more impressive but on reflection one comes to realise it is the TG that is producing a true perspective of the recording. I bought the TG for ease of use, to easily play my old 45s etc but although the arm is much maligned by many I in no way consider it to be less than a very good arm to compliment what is a fine sounding package for the money. One could easily pay much more and not find the satisfaction of ownership, ease of use and wonderful sound.

    Ortofon said that their DJ business reported lower sales in 2016, but their HiFi (audiophile) business is really strong.

    • @DjPhaseFour
      @DjPhaseFour 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alot of this is due to the Shure M44-7 cartridge I think, ortofon makes all these crazy carts that cost twice as much but since most DJs are using DVS now the Shure cart outshines them. Hell even the famous DJ Qbert uses the Shure rather than the one Ortofon makes with his name on them.

  • @maineboy1979
    @maineboy1979 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    even if it's not the same as the old 1200, why would being the same as the old one be a bad thing? look at what people are willing to pay for a used 1200 in pristine condition. looking at what people are willing to pay for a new old stock 1200. it was and is a phenomenal turntable. Technics could do themselves a lot more favors by saying "this is very similar to the original 1200 Mk2" rather than by saying "oh this is so much better" or "so much different"

    • @maineboy1979
      @maineboy1979 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      And that's great if it's true (the audio specs are identical so it may be hard to quantify those substantial improvements in scientific terms). But I don't think there's any harm in acknowledging that the 1200MK2 was, and is, an excellent table. Why else would people be spending $1999 for new old stock 1210MK5s? Conversely, I don't think it helps them sell 1200Gs by saying that they're dramatically better than 1200MK2s. Sure, highlight the improvements (which in my humble opinion are less than substantial), but they shouldn't disregard all the things about the 1200MK2 that make it great. If it was anything less than great, there wouldn't have been hundreds of thousands of people BEGGING Panasonic to bring it back.

    • @maineboy1979
      @maineboy1979 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would agree that a huge motor improvement would be a substantial improvement to the turntable, but I'm not convinced that the motor improvement is huge. I'm not being stubborn or ornery; I just have yet to see or hear proof that the improvement to the motor is indeed huge. If someone can demonstrate that to me, I'm all ears!

These have come down in price a little now and you can pick them up for about £1k new which is not actually too bad considering the economics of everything else. • @z00h
      @z00h 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These are the facts, not sure what you want to disagree with. Your saying that is like saying that 2+2 doesn't equal 4.

    • @z00h
      @z00h 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Obviously you don't otherwise you'd do some research beforehand. RRP on these is £1,299 (that includes VAT at 20%), at todays exchange rate that is roughly $1,600 or $1,333 without VAT. These were $350 (without sales tax/VAT) in 1980 which equals $1,100 in 2017. The difference is negligible if you take into account that these reissues aren't continuing from where the old 1200's left off and have addressed issues that original 1200's never had fixed.

    • @z00h
      @z00h 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Focus, these aren't the same decks so why would they cost the same as the product that had been on the market for 30 years (and had been amortised 1000 times over by then) in 2008 FFS? I'm merely stating the obvious that all the crybabies ignore the fact that at launch 1200's had cost similar money, adjusted for inflation, as hey do now.
      The other fact is that you as usual are getting fucked by your retailers who profiteer on early demand.

    Analog Planet have you listened to the rest of the Technics Reference system? I am thinking to hear the SB-R1 speakers. Would consider purchasing those for my listening room. It just seams that there isn't any good reviews of those speakers. Whats your outlook on the upcoming Technics SP10R? Have you seen the prototype yet? Did you dig out any inside info on it?

  • @davidfuster6919
    @davidfuster6919 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's pretty funny how some people tell that these Technics are not made for djs, but better for audiophiles.
    Firstly , why a dj cannot be also an audiophile?
    And secondly, what the hell do an audiophile needs +-8 / +-16 range of pitch for? Maybe to listen to some kind of Mozzart's concert which needs that kind of pitch?
    It's ridiculous. This is just a kind of marketing strategy from Panasonic, because this kind of turntables with such kind of pitch range and velocity stability is for Djs, belive it or not (aware of their expensive price).

    • @davidfuster6919
      @davidfuster6919 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So do you think a +-16 range of pitch to accurate the speed of an older record which could be "up to" 2% of variation isn't an overkill, nice.
      I think that is pretty clear that a Dj could take much more of it that a person who keeps the pitch at cero the 98% of the time.
      I don't think it's a silly thought. After all it's an improved version of the 1200 mk2 and the 1210 mk5g. I'm talking about this particular model, not the GAE one.

      Well those are still wonderful turntables but these new ones are redesigned and improved. Not a MASSIVE difference but the difference is present. Honestly though, for DJing just hold on to your MK2s. For audiophiles, this would be a step up. Great news!
    The W/F is the same as the G!
    and the rumble is not bad?! at 78dB!?
    That is not bad at all? What is the level for rumble on a audiofil turntable?
    I am thinking that it is hard to get a better speed stability and specs for $2000 on a "audiofil" turntable??
    some of this new table:
    -Wow and Flutter: 0.025% W.R.M.S.
    -Rumble: 78dB (IEC 98A Weighted)

    • @HiViNywschannel

      AmazonasBiotop Brother these figures are crazily good. Even the $30k turntables can't match, let alone $10k turntables. $2k is not cheap either...but factoring in scarily superb low rumble, and the best speed stability in the business... things get a bit crazy by comparison and by standards achieved.
      A great milestone achieved for the industry.

      HiViNyws channel hi friend!
      Yes I looked at a hi end turntable with a price tag at $21000 (more than 10 times expensive) and they brag about magnetic platter, "Our methodology is the ultimate vibration filter", "chassis is three layers of bonded acrylic/aluminum/acrylic, with damping material between layers", "3 isolation steel corner posts, 3 bolts, and the massive bearing assembly", "Analog Drive System (ADS) for the utmost accuracy in motor speed and fine speed adjustments", "The Inverted bearing features a hardened stainless steel shaft, 60 Rockwell chrome hardened ball, spinning in a phosphor bronze bushing, and sits on a PEEK thrust disc", "The motor pulley has an accuracy of +/- .0005” when leaving factory" and it going on and on..
      And still the table specifications is not as good as the SL1200!
      this $21000 table has "only" this specifications:
      Wow and flutter:

      Hi Michael. I am going on some past experience with the mk2. Changing to an external power supply removing it from underneath the platter has unearthed significantly better clarity of sound, and changing to an Origin Live arm (rega RB250 based) on my mk2 brought further gains on top. Sure VTA is more of a pain, but once I nailed this with appropriate spacers, the soundstage opened up further and instruments were better defined. I'm based in UK and there is a whole industry over here to modifying the Technics. See the "techiepedia" on art of sound forum and SoundHifi Evoke - they have just taken the new 1200G and modified it. All what I have heard and read suggests that the arm and PSU are ripe for upgrading. I think at this price level, Technics have really misunderstood their market and should have offered an armless version and one with an external PSU.

    Let's reduce this presentation to a single point. This is a DJ turntable just like the "G" model. It wasn't design to give the user the best possible output for his audiophile quality cartridge. I owned one of the first in 1973, and I would never own one again. Clearaudio, VPI, Rega, Pro-ject, and several other manufactures sell more exact sound production turntables given you use an equally high quality cartridge. Comparing at the same price point.

    Two thousand dollars is a lot of money for someone who simply wants to give their first analogue dribbles but for the connoisseurs of the brand and for those who simply want a turntable more than decent and honest and do not eat the budget that should go dedicated to buying discs , This can be an end of the road.

    $2K!?! For an upgraded SL1200? Out of range for the average DJ and what audiophile would chose a 1200GR over an RP6 or a Clearaudio Concept? This one is a swing and a miss from Technics.

    • @chrissyman77
      @chrissyman77 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      terrywho22 I would have this over the Clearaudio or Rega, it's the precise pitch control that I find critical and especially the quality of bass reproduction, most belt drives sound sloppy and lazy apart from the Voyds or Audionote decks but they ain't cheap.

    • @terrywho22
      @terrywho22 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure, if your markers for performance are bass and pitch stability, you'll likely prefer direct drive over belt and cds over turntables. I've owned a handful of Technics TT (including an SL1200), and found them to be competent workhorses. But whether due to the drive mechanism or, more likely, the arm, I found the Technics to be outclassed sonically by "higher-end" tables... tables which at $2K and $4k Technics is now competing squarely against.

      Chris M.R. Santos On every big event with electronic music when you see tables they are always old technics. New tech is even higher quality. And it's only one professional deck on the market at this moment. Reloop,pioneer, etc are good just for home use. No sound engineer would really risk to use something else.

    • @ACCOUNTANTB
      @ACCOUNTANTB 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know it......but dj market today is diferent....entirely.....they dont use turntables to play regular vinyl anymore....they use it as interface for Serato or Traktor hardware.....so....these other new releases from Pioneer, Reloop, etc......fits it.....by the price range they do offer......course the Old Technics MK2 worth to have as used ones - however, the new Technics wont be able to reach dj market again....not at this price range....

    • @TLka2.0
      @TLka2.0 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I still believe that at big events and in big clubs we will see new techs [gr] . When Techno DJs ask for tables They intend to play vinyls, otherwise they use controllers or cdj's for serato and tractor software. There is plenty of cheaper alternatives and yet we always see 7 years and olders Techs. Howewer I aggre New GR will not be again most popular dj deck but most proffesional - YES. For home usage, scratching and playing popular music from serato or tractor there are plenty cheaper alternatives which will do the job.

    • @ACCOUNTANTB
      @ACCOUNTANTB 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its a huge battle ahead.....theres still standalone controllers such as new Denons and Pioneers XDJ......I have 4 denons 3700 + 2mk2.....i love them...Im not shure if the Pro DJ guys will tend to have these new Tech.........they probably have same as me....mk2 / mk3 / mk5G......Maybe new clubs......and as i said - the hi-fi market

    • @TLka2.0
      @TLka2.0 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no reason why you would not upgrade mk2-mk6 fo GR/G other than better performance/better sound quality. GR/G torque adjustment will give you exactly the same 'feeling' of MK2-MK6 engine with slightly better or the same pitch accuracy and better engine response. So nothing changes - new tech will be where old one is now. Serato just introduced new feature which is wow & flutter stability control which means that shitty tables will keep stable wow & flutter but will have some engine response latency so Technics decks will be only for DJs who use ocasionally vinyls (as it is now)

    Meh...I am still okay with my decision to sell my record collection and Pioneer turntable years ago. I understand that many feel a turntable and records will provide a warmer sound, and I've seen various tests which show the sound is warmer. In the end, the compact disc gives a closer to true sound but people prefer the warmer sound and the overall tactile experience of the record album (I do as well). I just won't spend thousands of dollars on a high end audio system to play a handful of records. Even if I still had my old LPs I wouldn't be spending the money now because I don't tend to buy physical media anymore with a rare exception. I am happy to see this still has a market, but for the "average" music listener things like Spotify are adequate.

      That's because they listen to old turntables like Thorens, 70s Linn LP12, etc, etc, they add warmth and some people like that but it's not accurate! And yes some cartridges too add a bloom, but it's not on the recording.

    Too expensive for a 1200. I loved the older model but to get a good (very good) reproduction you needed to mod it for the stability. Setting the price at 2000$ defeats the purpose of the giant killer that the 1200 used to be. Also, since they are addressing the audiophile community, they could have made it automatic.

      1) Magnesium alloy ( www.technics.com/us/products/grand-class/direct-drive-turntable-system-sl-1200g.html ). Get your FUCKIN' facts straight.
      2) ...Not even about the price/performance ratio. I'm not a billionare, and for better quality I would have paid 2x the price of a good Audio Technica AT-LP1240USB (and a little more, in the range of 1000 euros), but 4000$ (and even 2000$, for the "budget" SL-1200 GR !) is ludacris. The year is 2017, we trim/shape/cut things with lasers and industrial robots, and tolerances of nanometers are not impossible AND DON'T HAVE TO BE EXPENSIVE. This turntable is not a hand-made swiss watch, it is an old relic of a music era made with modern means (= cheap, because of industrialisation), with modern materials. Panasonic targets the hipster community, and that's what they'll get, but not me. You don't need a 1000 years old katana made with gold and panda tears to cut a bread, if you understand what I mean...

      Analog Planet you understand I'm just really pissed off at Technics because all these years us DJ's relied on these turntables and now they made a piece of s*** that we can't afford so I'm not really a fool. I'm just pissed off because I'm working class and I can't afford this s***. Do they plan on making an affordable table again or they just going to put out this crap that nobody's going to buy? Seriously who would really want this? Is there really a market for this one? I know I don't stand alone on this one. A guy below mentioned how we made their company successful and I really believe that's true. So I'd be really happy if they would put out a turntable that isn't ridiculously overpriced

      Analog Planet you don't have to insult me. You're an old fart at case you were unaware

      Analog Planet yeah we'll be happy if I reach your age. Hopefully so. Anyway keep doing what you do. Your videos are very interesting. I'm just mad at Technics because I was so disappointed when they stopped making the turntable that are so much fun to DJ on. And now they come up with this. I guess I'll just buy a Pioneer plx 500. Have you the scene that turntable yet? Not sure if it's any good but I'm not looking for super high-quality. Great quality is enough for me. And there's nothing like the feeling of lining up beats with one of these. I just don't see how a plus minus 6% pitch control is used for regular listening

      Analog Planet yeah I know that after watching some other reviews. So what's up with the pitch control? When does any audio file need a plus minus 6%? And then from what I understand this one has a button to double that. I would love to own this turntable but it's too much. Music is not a priority in my life. I just DJ for fun. It's just a shame that Technics doesn't recognize the market that really appreciates what they've done in the past. I've known so many people to spend their income tax checks including myself on the 1200s and 1210s of yesteryear in years past.

      Analog Planet I actually do have a pair of 1200 md3's at my house now. They belong to a friend from Austin who stores them here because he doesn't have room where he is currently living. I have one of them set up in my music room along with my 2 Pioneer CDj 900 turd players and a Pioneer DJM 900 Nexus mixer. He also has 3 crates of vinyl here. I use to have a pair of 1210s but I sold them to a friend when I was in Nursing School. I definately regret that now.
