    So when dropping the payload, you lose the doors? Unless you go and find the little things. Also can long range fpv still take place if trees get in between you and the aircraft?

    • @kd5nrh
      @kd5nrh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking the same thing, but the door looks pretty simple, so making lots of spares sounds like a better plan than having the drag of a hinged door hanging loose.
      As for what to drop in a SAR scenario, I'd think a smoke canister in one pod and a small aerial flare in the other, along with maybe a signal whistle and/or air horn would be the most helpful, letting the victim have another method to guide searchers in if the plane can't keep circling overhead long enough for them to get there.

    Beautiful plane! Fly it (past LOS and FPV) while you can!

  • @P44man
    @P44man 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    A few minor thoughts; first of all, I have to say I very much preferred the look of the wood finish on the V1. I know, I know, its just a choice, but it looked so awesome. The white cover on your V2 hides all the craftsmanship and makes it look like cheap plastic.
    Secondly, why would you put both rx antenna's in the exact same orientation? Put them at a a 45-90 degree angle, so you'll have better chance of reception while banking
    Lastly, the dropable payload under the wings, did I see it right that you lose the hatch on each drop? There is room for improvement there I think.
    Now that I got that off my chest; what a fantastic plane!

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      there are two control systems, one ezuhf with diversity, and the second antenna for it is not visible, because it's hidden in the fuselage. it's in a horizontal position to best receive at very ugh altitudes. the second one you see is the antenna for the dragon link. on a n airframe like this you tend to run out of control channels no matter how many of them you use. you also have more functionality than one pilot can handle.
      The white monokote is more stable in the sunlight, and does not show the accumulation of condensed moisture inside the airframe. being cooler, there will be less of it too. it was a bit of an issue with the prototype covered in clear. i no longer need to inspect the airframe each flight either, as the v-2 is much more robust.
      I looked the look too, but this is so much more practical.
      you do lose the hatch, but i was just trying to show one application for the droppable payload. the hatches can be made out of a piece of cardboard, and cut out with scissors, so no bio loss there, or is it really littering if it biodegrades within a couple of weeks. anyway, hope that helps explain things. cheers

    • @horaciostjeward
      @horaciostjeward 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice... The twin engine setup makes this a very interesting platform.

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Horacio Stjeward once i committed to a twin, there are lots of benefits, and a lot of bad habits of single engine planes go away. p effect, torque roll, gyroscopic precession, thrust height, thrust angle problems, and vibration problems go away because props are in clean air, and the vibration counters itself internal to the wing spar,and never transfers into the fuselage,where the sensors are located. etc, etc..

    What airfoil u use in jemini v2?

  • @blueflamingo1
    @blueflamingo1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Beautiful plane. I would love to build one. What is the max prop size it can run in the stock configuration?

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      blueflamingo1 without modification of the airframe, a 17 inch prop will physically fit. if you flip the motor mount brackets, a 21 inch prop will fit. it's just a few bolts to swap. the recommended prop is a 13 x8.

    • @blueflamingo1
      @blueflamingo1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I was thinking of running 15x4 propellor for greater efficiency over a 13x8 (completely unnecessary I know)

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      blueflamingo1 i have tried runnig less pitch, and it was not as good. what might work better would be a larger diameter, even more pitch, and lower rpm/KV. if you try anything, i would be interested to know the results.
      the lower pitch props work well on multi rotors at near zero airspeed, but for planes, a bit higher pitch usually works better. the 15 inch prop will fit, though. trying props is cheap at least.

    • @blueflamingo1
      @blueflamingo1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting, I never would have suspected that a large diameter but smaller pitch would perform worse.
      How much thrust are you getting on your motors (roughly)?
      I was thinking Cobra 2820 840kv on 15x6. This would give me around 4.5kg thrust total. I don't intend on carrying a large payload, instead just a very stable AP/FPV platform. Do you think this would be enough thrust? If I go ahead with this project, I will keep you informed on how the motors perform.

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      blueflamingo1 the difference is relative to airspeed. at zero airspeed, a prop with large diameter and less pitch. ike a multi rotor prop is the best, and produces the best static thrust.
      static thrust is no longer relevant, as the airplane will not be static when the motor is running,a nd the prop is working. have a look at the props on a turboprop commuter plane in flight. lots of pitch, and they use constant speed props too. but they adjust for a lot of pitch in cruise flight.
      i have not tried much larger props on gemini, however,a nd would be interested to know.
      thanks.

    questions:
    1 does it work on high humidity or rain?
    2 if one engine fails, the remaining, can bring the plane home?
    2.1 there is one batt for both engines? so if one fails, the other can use the remaining power?..
    3 is it possible to glide silently, if needed?

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      domnuspike humidity, no problem, in fact we did our 4 hr +endurance flight in high humidity.
      rain, don't know, it's a wood plane, probably not the greatest idea to intentionally fly in the rain. if i did, it would seal the gaps in monokote with tape first.
      one large battery pack. lots of cells, so if a cell fails, no problem. with modern cells, that should not be much of problem , anyway.
      motors only running at 80% pf their max rating for continuous, so a motor failure is unlikely.
      we did experience a motor failure on our prototype, at full power in a climb, and we were able to maintain control, without problem. it just pulled to one side a bit.
      you can go back to our channel to watch the video. we happened to have a camera looking at the motor when it failed, and you can see the smoke roll out from the cowling.
      we have upgraded the motors since then, and also, the new style motor mounts are heat sinks.
      it glides very well, we recently glided from altitude for 40 minutes straight.
      i set props to freewheel in glide to provide some aerodynamic braking actually.
      check out our other videos, and the website for more info.

    instead of installing to blade propeller is it possible to install four blade propeller for more thrust.

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it's possible. however, the stock thrust is more than sufficient to carry a large external payload and have a good sustained rate of climb. The plane climbs primarily due to the lift, not so much the thrust. The motors just have to make enough thrust to maintain a climb airspeed, and a small angle of climb, and the wing does the rest. It's quite different from most sport aircraft.

    • @shubhampareta07

      juan sanchez You have to look at the reason that the laws are made, many new technologies are outlawed because of public fear that has its base in ignorance, and fanaticism.
      governments are also scared of the technology, and tend to make blanket rules, not for safety, but out of fear of losing their power.
      The benefits for the future, are a cleaner planet, and better agriculture production volume/quality, among saving lives, and providing super cheap access to space.
      The governments will eventually realize the reality of it, and it will become mainstream, and common.
      remember, in many countries, cell phones, radios, internet, and television broadcast were illegal, but we now have all of these technologies on our phones.
      The countries that choose to regulate these technologies at this time will not be any safer, they will criminalize a sector of their most productive population, and will get a very late start with the largest growing industry in the world.
      it is very sad indeed.
      all of this has to be taken into account. just be safe, and learn what you need to do so.
      best wishes, my friend.

    Hi, I recently got the plans for the Gemini and have a few questions:
    1.It is possible to use 2x 500mm tube rather than 1x 1000mm tube in the centre wing section, I can get 2 x 500mm tube for a 1/5 of the price than 1 x 1000mm tube.
    2. The plan package on drop box came with sheets 2,3,4,5 of the plans, but not page 1, is this normal?
    3. I have lots of ply available to use, but not much balsa, would it be ok to use ply where it says use balsa (it will be the correct thickness)? I still intend to use balsa for the square and circular dowel sections.
    Thanks for the great plans, can't wait to get building this machine!

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      DroneDuo use the link below for the purchase of the carbon fiber tube, it should not be very expensive. it really needs the 1 meter long section, unless you have a way to join the two 500mm sections without losing strength. you could join them with an aluminum plug, but you would have to have it machined, then use small screws to secure it? One piece is best because it can be slid, out and removed for transport.
      page 1 is now called the spec sheet, it has been re-named, this is normal.
      it's ok to substitute lite-ply for many parts, just watch the overall weight. the design is tolerant to weight, but the payload, duration will be reduced slightly. in most cases, keep the thickness. Let me know if you have any other questions. my direct email is fpvreviews@gmail.com

    This is fantastic. Great to see the increase in capacity from V1. Shame to submit to practicality and simplicity of design by ditching the excellent cooling design from V2. Understandable though. What is the scope for solar power, given the wing surface area available. Could push you past 12km. Very impressed viewer from Australia, will look to get onto one in the near term.

      +Dennis Lobos Thanks for your inquiry. there are options, depending how much of the wood you are willing to cut, and what you want laser cut. send an email to flyingsquirrelmodels@gmail.com, and Wayne will be happy to send you the info package with pricing. The laser cut kit options ship from Canada.

    • @joeddejohn
      @joeddejohn 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Had to watch a video to understand what you were talking about. Heh. Might not be a bad idea. Easier said than done for sure. Really don't know all the options out there to comment further.

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Joe DeJohn the overall challenge of integrating retracts is fairly simple, in that most aircraft that have them either have very complex actuators, or are a low wing configuration, making the retracts simple to integrate.
      you're right, though, it would be cool. and reduce drag, etc.

    • @joeddejohn
      @joeddejohn 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder if you made a hinge with a spring that would straighten the posts. A small servo with gearing would collapse the hinge(retract). The posts are partly a stiff spring for shock absorbtion. Crude.

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Joe DeJohn E-flite makes some very nice and lightweight servo less retracts, it's just a problem of how to integrate them.

    Can this aircraft fly single engine in case engine lost? With full payload what are realistic endurance at 7 thousand feet MSL field elevation and climbing to a cruise altitude of 8 thousand feet MSL?

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +svsoftair I have not flown the Gemini V-2 on one motor, however, i have flown the prototype, (very similar) on one motor, and it pulled to one side a bit, but was very controllable. it was at max power at the time of the failure. i expect that a motor failure in itself would not be a problem. i may simulate a motor failure, by making a way to shut off the signal to the esc in flight, and do some testing, when i set the chance.
      it's very unlikely that a motor would fail in flight, if the motors and esc's are not overloaded. about 75-80% of max is recommended for continuous operation at full power. and the wiring has to be large enough as well.
      at that altitude, i don't think the endurance would be much different, if at all. with an air breathing engine, yes, but with the electric power, i don't think there will be a big difference. perhaps none. if there is any, an adjustment to the prop diameter or pitch would compensate. I have flown it up to 4008 meters, and it climbed just fine, at 30 amps out of 80.

    is this balsa or aircraft plywood? If I buy your plans, are they in .plt format so I can send to my own cutter?

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +grinchyface It's made from Balsa, aircraft grade lite ply, and carbon fiber tube spar, and pultruded strips. The plans are PDF, but if you want it laser cut, the kit from Flying Squirrel Models is a great value, it's about the same price as the wood.

    • @grinchyface
      @grinchyface 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks sir! I considered buying a kit, but as this would be my first balsa build I imagine I'd break or mar half the parts at least once. I purchased the plan last night- is there any chance for an extra fee I can get .svg .plt or another vector format that your laser guy might be using?

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +grinchyface Thanks for your purchase! The laser cut files were created by Flying Squirrel Models for their own use in the manufacturing of the kit, so they re not available, however, they have priced to the kit in such a way, that it is cost effective when compared to purchasing the raw materials. I recently did a custom build from the kit, and it was excellent. Sorry I can't help with the specific request. Best, Spike

    Can you waterproof the Gemini?

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jorge Tortosa I'm afraid that would be quite impractical. We did build a smaller uav a while back for yacht photography, called Atlantis. it had 1.5 meter span, and 50 minutes endurance. single boom pusher. it flew very well, but applications are limited. we find it better to spend the extra weight required for waterproofing simply to increase airframe performance, even when flying over water. there would be a very special set of circumstances where the waterproofing solution would be good, but for now we are concentrating on land based aircraft which can be flown over water.

    • @FPVREVIEWS

      The airframe can be built for 1000-1300 US depending on kit version, or scratch built version, and choice of propulsion. not including battery, control system, or fpv equipment. It's more than the foamies, but low cost when you compare it to other UAV's with similar capabilities.

      Depends on how little battery you are willing to carry. about 7 lbs would be max, and still be able to fly for at least 30 minutes. at the recommended max gross weight. if you overload the plane, and only fly for a few minutes on small batteries, probably could carry more than 10 lbs. not a great idea, but would do it. if you want to lift a lot of weight, a 16 ft telecaster would lift more. gas engine.
