X Japan were founders of the movement called visual kei, which had a tremendous impact on the Japanese rock and metal scene, and on japanes emusic in general. Visual kei was sort of a rebellion against social norms. As Yoshiki, the drummer and leader of the band, once noted: they belonged nowhere, so a new genre was basically born. This is already their consolidated period, only hide (the guitar player who looks feminine) kept the visual kei look. Their early looks were a lot more outrageous, with long hair towered up high with cans of hair spray. they wore outrageous clothing, especially hide and Yoshiki, Yoshiki used to wear lace dresses on stage, with lace stockings, long blond hair floating around furiously as he drummed himself into literal oblivion :D Hide had long, huuge pink hair that reached down to his hips. They were a sight to behold :) and because of that a lot of later visual kei bands started taking this to the very extreme, to the point where you cannot tell anymore if the musician is male or female, and that was the POINT. It doesn't matter what their sex is. :) Check out photos of Mana from Malice Mizer, you'd never guess he is a man. This all started with Yoshiki and Hide dressing gender ambiguously on stage. Fun fact: despite the deminine looks, most visual kei artists are heterosexual and many of them are married and have kids.

This band had some great power metal songs (Kurenai is one of them) and their hair and their live performance in the late 1980s was totally outrageous. They are men all of them, but yeah, the guitarist has a very feminine look

X Japan has a very hard story, all over loss and deaths... Bass player and Guitar player (with pink hair, he is not a girl, his name is HIDE (prounonce hee-day) passed away. Hide was found dead after five month of this concert. And Singer TOSHI was brainwashed by cult. In this concert (there is why is last live) he was in the cult already. Because of this they disbanded. And reunited after ten years in 2007. But now is all okay with him. But they have a great music history now, of many many great songs. Recommend you "Week End", "X", "Miscast", "Celebration", "Stab me jn the back". And they have many ballads, because drummer YOSHIKI is also pianist and composer and frontman in band.

Get a hold of the documentary We Are X. Tells a great and sad story and provides a whole new context to this performance. So much is going on in the body language here that you don't even realize.

@@giacomojamesPunkRockHeadReact Yes, there is a palpable tension in the air. It’s interesting to me that in a lot of ways this tension elevates the music. This is X Japan at the peak of their power and the end of the road for this version.
I told myself I wouldn’t subscribe to any more TH-cam reactors, but you’re too damn likable. You got my sub.

@@giacomojamesPunkRockHeadReact you up for a ballad? Gotta be Endless Rain from Last Live. You’ll see the lead singer Toshi whose membership in a cult is causing the break up of the band basically going to his band mates singing his heart out and pleading for their understanding. You’ll see him sit next to his childhood friend Yoshiki on a piano bench and you’ll literally feel the distance between them. Emotional stuff. Endless Rain was the song that sold me on being an X Japan fan.

If you want an "In" with any Japanese business associates, pick this song for karaoke. It is very famous in Japan. They are the undistributed kings of the power ballad.

Notice the neck brace on the drummer Yoshiki. I think that perhaps Baby Metal uses the neck brace in the sets as a nod to X Japan. They helped start the metal scene in Japan. Huge influence. If you like punk rock listen to early X Japan tracks.

SU-METAL was born 10 days before this concert and is said to be destined to inherit the traditional neck corset.

please also check out the other live version of this song many years later with piano and violin intro (Drummer Yoshiki plays the piano)! Guitarist Hide had long passed away when this happened (they are much older already) but they still had him play with them on the big screen with old recordings. Plus the performance and crowd reaction are magical.
I guess the somewhat harsh sound here has more to do with how old this recording is and the difficulties of capturing good live recordings.
Nemophila covered this song as well btw!

Giacomo, if you're still in the mood for dark, doomy and atmospheric stuff, try my new favorite band Arkona and their most recent album, Krahm. They're folk metal from Russia, usually very epic, but that one is much more experimental. If using backing tracks for parts that are overdubbed in the album doesn't bother you, Mantra (intro) / Shtorm live th-cam.com/video/dhQD8thabaY/w-d-xo.html
