They’re the biggest band in the world that never caught on in the USA because they don’t sing in English. I find that music transcends language and while I don’t speak Japanese they are still one of my favorite bands over the past 30 years or so.

    They are not myths
    They are not legends
    They are not an idol
    They are gods
    "We are X"
Yoshiki, drummer, pianist, founder and leader, He wears a neck brace, so as not to hurt himself, since he had surgery.
This concert was on December 30, 1997, they did not play again until 2008.
That is the imposing Tokyo Dome, only two Japanese metal bands have performed there, "X Japan" and "Babymetal"
Babymetal's Akatsuki song is inspired by Kurenai
The song No rain, No rainbow, by Babymetal, is a tribute to Endelss rain by XJAPAN
The song Headbanguer by Babymetal talks about a girl who turns 15 and goes to her first metal concert, referring to the fact that it is an XJAPAN concert.
In the Babymetal song death, there are many references to XJAPAN.
You can see that Su-metal is crucified, with a neck brace

I'll add my voice...."Endless Rain" from the Last Live...IT IS A MUST!!!
And since you watched Babymetal's "Headbanger"...the MV for Headbanger has a focus on a Neckbrace..it was a direct reference to Yoshiki's Neckbrace. He is the Headbanger!!

    Great video!
French fan here, been listening to X Japan since the early 90s (I found out about them by chance in 1993 or 1994, I think). Back in the days, manga and Japanese animation were extremely popular in some European countries, especially in France. Tons of teenagers and young adults became obsessed with everything related to Japan and its culture (I think it's what Americans call "weebs" or "weeaboos"), and as a result you could find JP imports of popular artists (Luna Sea, X Japan, hide, Malice Mizer, L'Arc~en ~Ciel, etc.) in some Parisian shops in the mid/late 90s. X Japan was so big back then that they already had a small but strong international fanbase. Furthermore, Yoshiki working with Roger Taylor from Queen and on the KISS tribute album really piqued people's curiosity. People wanted to know who that Japanese virtuoso was. Their popularity was so big that you could even find their Last Live concert at the Virgin Megastore on the Champs Elysées, in Paris !!
That being said, you need to know that Yoshiki is an egomaniacal drama queen and an insufferable control freak. His behavior caused a mutiny within the band in the early 90s, started by bassist Taiji. This got him fired and after his departure, the band never sounded the same again. And recently, it's singer Toshi who called it quits and stopped talking to Yoshiki, even though they've known each other since kindergarten.
Pity, really! X-Japan could have become a worldwide phenomenon, but Yoshiki's oversized ego killed the band.

X-Japan, the biggest Japanese metal band of its time and even holds records today such as they sold out the Tokyo Dome more times than anyone else. The guitarist hide (hid-eh or hid-ay) passed away in 1998 and had 65,000 people at his funeral. He was also successful with his own band called Spread Beaver (Yes I know🤭). 35,000 people attended the 20 year anniversary concert of his death as well in 2018. Last year a film was released in Japan about his death and his brothers and bands efforts to tour the new album (just completed before his death) using video of hide on a main stage. You can find footage of his last TV appearances on the day he died performing new tracks off the album. (Beware of being blocked though with those plus X-Japan videos) Yoshiki (the drummer) was co-founder of the band and that's why you have X-Japan official videos on his YT channel. He is also a hugely successful pianist and has and sell out concert tours of the US just recently.

Xjapan's leader, drummer YOSHIKI, suffered a neck injury due to severe head banging. His neck brace was inherited by SU-METAL of BABYMETAL, who was born in December 1997, the month of their last live performance. It all started with XJAPAN.😁😁😁

This video is the 1997/12/31 performance.
This song was almost trashed many times, but Hide recovered and arranged it.
Hide's (pink hair and red jacket) death on 1998/5 was a shock to Japan. Public opinion was divided between accident and suicide theories. The reason for the accident theory is that hide had orthopaedic problems with his shoulders (as well as his neck on the drums), and he routinely pulled his shoulders upwards with a towel hung from the ceiling before going to bed. The theory is that this accidentally led to the hanging. The suicide theory is that before his death, hide had been making meaningful statements on the radio, etc., and that on 1/1/1998, the year after X-JAPAN broke up six months earlier, he launched Hide with Spread Beaver, established the Lemonade label in the US, and was getting more and more talented American bands to join him. At that time, he created a band called 'zilch' and Vo, whose unique style of singing with noise impressed Marilyn Manson so much that he adopted it himself, as mentioned later. In the meantime, she released 'ROCKET DIVE'. 「 th-cam.com/video/-qoVeoG8XuU/w-d-xo.html 」 The lyrics are meant to challenge young people, but when Japanese people hear them, they sometimes feel that they are some kind of suicide note, which is the basis for the suicide theory.
Finally, hide has passed away, but he is still an official member of the band. (He also appears on the monitor at the 2009 LIVE).

My favourite band of all time. Their story is beautiful, tragic and will make you tear up multiple times. They're pure passion and freedom. If you're still interested in them, watch their documentary We Are X, by Stephen Kijak. It's mostly about their leader Yoshiki, but gives a good insight into the band's story and the figure of Hide as well (lead guitar, pink hair, absolute icon).

Yeah this was from the Last Live, in December 1997, right before they disbanded and the lead guitar player, hide (the one with the pink hair and the guitar you liked), died, May 2 1998.
They've mostly been on tour in Japan, unfortunately, but the band was re-formed in the late 2000's with Sugizo from Luna Sea as lead guitar player, released a few new songs (although we are still waiting for the new album haha) and went on a world tour spread between 2010 and 2015. Due to this, they've been mostly famous in Japan until the spread of the japanese culture world wide in the early 2000's, although they got recognition from giants, such as Gene Simmons who said that if X Japan were born in America, they could have been one of the biggest bands in the world.
My live suggestions for new reaction videos:
    - Endless Rain (ballad)
    - Week-End
    - Silent Jealousy
    - Sadistic Desire
And one of my all time favorites: the live acoustic version of Rose of Pain, if you react to these kinds of videos as well!

In the 1990s, it was prohibited for audience members to take photos with their mobile phones during live performances in Japan. Even today, artists performing overseas sometimes permit it, but generally, fans make it a rule to follow order and follow officials' instructions.

I randomly heard a song from X Japan before 5 years. And that's was it. I fell in love immediately with their music. Yoshiki the leader (drummer and pianist) is a genius and always so passionate. Nice reaction!! I highly recommend Endless Rain from the last live and then Rose of Pain (1991 with Orchestra) - Rusty Nail - Week End - X ....and from ballads Tears - Say Anything (with Orchestra) Forever Love. If you wanna check lyrics too i have translated them in my channel 😅.

OK, X Japan are The Rock Legends, nee GODS of J-Metal. When Hide (He-Day), the lead guitarist died, the Prime Minister of Japan had a national museum built in Hide's honor. X Japan changed how Japan viewed rock music and had a profound effect on Japanese culture.
X Japan played at Lollapalooza in 2010.
I would tell you the history of X Japan, but you don't have time to read the script for a 50 episode mini-series. (Yes, their story is long, dramatic, and filled with death and tragedy) After losing 2 bass players and their lead guitarist, they are still (sort of) around and Yoshiki, their founder, drummer, and pianist has been working on their next studio album for many years, but they did release a single, "Angel", in July 2023. Yoshiki lives in Hollywood and is Gene Simmons' next door neighbor.
X Japan is worth a deep dive just to see how their stage costumes and hair evolved. "Big Hair" understates the variety of hair styles X Japan tried out over the years. They were pioneers of the "Visual Kei" movement in Japanese rock.

this particular performance was from their 1997 performance before they broke up. they would end up getting back together 10 years later but this is the last performance with this particular 5 man lineup. also the drummers neck brace is from headbanging too much. he had to have a vertebrae in his neck replaced a few years ago

I suggest their song Rose of Pain for you to react next if you eould like to continue to react to them. It's a long song but I think it's worthy. By the way, those are lightsticks.

Gene Simmons of KISS said that if X-Japan had been from the west they would have been the BIGGEST band in the world!!!! And yes they toured the US and sold out venues like Madison Square Garden and the Forum in LA. The "Last Live " was from 1997. At the time they thought it was the end as the vocalist Toshi had gotten involved in a religious cult that Brainwashed him. He escaped the cult years later and in 2009 X-Japan came back. Unfortunately the guitarist Hide had died so they recruited guitarist 🎸 Sugizo to join. You should react to Rusty Nail, the opener of their comeback tour.

Only the vocalist and the drummer are left alive. When the guitarist committed suicide it was a tragedy in Japan, fans attempted suicide and two died. There are reports on TH-cam showing the desperation of fans, most of whom were teenage girls. Gene Simmons said in an interview that if X Japan were Westerners, they would be the biggest band in the world. The drummer wore an orthopedic collar because he broke his neck during one of the performances. The original band disbanded in 1997, the year this concert was recorded. X Japan was the first Japanese band to play at Lollapalooza. The second was... Band-Maid.
