Hey thanks for watching as always, this one is a shorter video. I am not walking away from longer form content, after I am done moving I hope to get rolling on some longer content, but hopefully this makes a nice viewing experience while I put that together. Do you hate this format? Please feel free to let me know.
I have been BEGGING people to play this since it came out. There is just so much in this game that feels like the PS/Saturn era and the nostalgia the game it invokes is pretty powerful for me. It is such a satisfying a game to play.
I decided to play this game because every steam review talked about how incredible the story was and man IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. The overall plot is pretty generic but the execution is absolutely incredible, i COULD NOT predict how this shit would develop at all and it definitely did not go the route i expected it to. I can't even complain about the review not talking much about the story because LITERALY EVERYTHING IN THIS FUCKING GAME IS A SPOILER. Anyway, if you wanna get high, this shit is better than meth, both the visuals and story feels like a fever dream.
ASTLIBRA Review! I've done a good deal of thinking on this game. The way that stock photos and other publicly available resources were spliced together stuck a certain chord that took me a while to pin down. I did manage to figure it out. It's my crippling nostalgia for the browser/Flash games of my youth that this game manages to strike, creating a style amalgamated from a thousand different corners of the internet. Perhaps a good descriptor would be 'curated.'
I've been curious about this game for a while, actually, so thank you for your insight! It is really interesting to find more about it. I will defo get it one of these days
A game I don't know but covered by my favourite up and coming content creator? Let's fucking go!! Was just watching your Star Ocean video since I just wrapped up my playthrough of it so this was great timing.
This game is one of my favorite of all time. I will say though I think the bad jokes and adult jokes falling flat is on purpose as a play at typical japanese tropes. Your character reacts the same way as you do pretty much. they don't care about them, they don't find them funny, and their lack of reaction kind of makes it awkward for those making the jokes too. Even in the thick of tropes your character doesn't really care about them, which is pretty refreshing to be honest. Even the raunchy chapter has a reason for existing that isn't there to be fan service, but something more sinister all along instead. It feels like those jokes are set up just to tear down and make fun of.
This game doesn't look like my particular cup of tea, but I always enjoy your reviews! And I like the shorter form content too. I feel like short and long form both have their strengths. 😄
IMO masterpiece. The backgrounds and terrain looks extremely janky, and now I know why:) Definitely one of my favourites after clocking 90h+ and 100%'d it. The story got me engaged much more than I expected and for two weeks I was living this game, playing it every time I had any chance. The translation on launch wasn't really bad, kinda of bearable and you get used to it (as with some other jank in the game), unless we were talking about skills - then it was straight up terrible, and I dont know if it is all fixed. It was extremely inaccurate is lots of cases, and some skills had completely wrong translation. I remember getting constantly dunked on by enemies starting chapter... IIRC 4 or 5. You unlock one of the Karon skills that was supposed to give you resistance to all abnormalities by 10 and increase break damage by 1.5x. Turns out, someone from JP community drops by, gives a heads up on wrong translation and gives proper one - skill increases resistance by 100, but you are receiving 1.5x damage. With how damage is calculated against your defense, I think the difference was much bigger than 1.5x, since when I was testing it on game epilogue (80 hours in when I found out about this), same monster was hitting me nearly 3x harder with skill on. If not going for achievements, I strongly recommend easy or normal - hard was... lets say I played half of the time with skill that makes you deal more damage but die in one hit, and it made game so much easier. Astlibre has also DLC, and if we are talking about fanservice, the DLC has much more - since you can wear most outfits shown in the game (be it either NPC, enemy or one of the cast), like succubus outfit or maid outfit. And while the type of game is based on gameplay from base game epilogue, it still provides different spells, items (mostly, there are some base game items, either unchanged or just used graphics), skills or link tree.
This is one that I couldn't get through the demo because it felt... not nice to control. This was at or before launch. The RPG/Anime look hooked me, but there was definitely a lack of polish in the gameplay that was really offputting for me at the time. Maybe I should add it to a price alert at $5 and add it to my Steam backlog in the future.
I had that same feeling, and I dunno if it's stockholme syndrome or not, but it did start to feel good once I unlocked a bit more. It'd be a good on-sale snag for sure
@@prettycody Had same feeling - it gets a while to get used to the controls, and after couple of hours into the game unlocking certain Karon skills it gets massively better.
Holy frick, 15 years making a video game. The game developer must have really believed in themselves and its concept if they worked on it for that long.
Yeah, there's some real passion behind this one! I don't think I could do it, honestly. The very idea of folding laundry can sometimes stop me in my tracks.
@@prettycody It’s one of those RPGs with a huge cast of recruitable characters, and maybe the first game I ever played with a major diverging path in the story? Super fond memories of it, but I haven’t played it since the PS2 heyday. I wish they’d port it, but I don’t think it got enough attention when it released.
Not entirely related to the overall topic, but what game is the first shown for the first few seconds of the intro? I recognize it and I'm wracking my brain trying to remember the name.
before i watch this, i just wanna say that its nice to see someone else covering this underrated kino - but man, it just doesnt sit well with me to call this game "ugly". 😭😭 i mean, i getchu... but it still just doesnt feel right. 😭
Aww oh no, hopefully the conclusion of the video paints me as less of an Astlibra bully. I do agree the style is very atypical and unique - it ends up being part of the charm.
It is wild you mention that because I just released a video on a game in the Xanadu series, weirdly enough. Faxanadu is awesome though. Shame it came out so late in the NES that I missed it as a kid.

Definitely a fan of your long-form stuff, but this was fun too. Variety is the spice of life and all that.
This has been on my wishlist for a while because I love weird, awkward ARPGs and anime. I'll get it next time it's on sale.
More PrettyCody is a good thing. Your writing and delivery is creative and hilarious. And your review picks are on point too.

I was super surprised by how much I enjoyed this game. I've been super glad to see so many people in the comments section who also love it a lot.

That's a good way of putting it. The game really is very thoughtful with all its choices.
this game reminds me of nes and SNES games, the ones he mentioned, but also games like faxanadu
I found the sweaty soles reference and it was 100% NOT what i was expecting 😂 awesome vid buddy

My life has peaked after that Patron shoutout 🥰
I'm glad you made this, heard about the game seemed okay and I didn't bother further. Now you've convinced me this could be a good time.
Yesssss, join me. Hit the png caterpillars.
Love the additional shorter vids, great stuff. Keep it up!
Thank you! I appreciate it. It was fun to make so I am really glad to see people liking it.
"this video is stupid, much like me."
Well, that kind of self-depreciating humor is exactly what I live for. have a sub.

I'm glad someone else likes Brandish
Heck yeah, Brandish is good. You get it.

I still need to play the dlc. But this game really blew me away. I'm glad I gave it a chance.
And Im playing this one right now as well.

It starts to feel better after you unlock some possession skills and I think lighter weapons really helps with smoothness until you get used to it

whats the game at 00:31?
Brandish on PSP

No worries. I will list them out in the description but you were looking at Zanki Zero for that one.
It's look like interesting game to play
The visual kind of remind me of old ps1 game with pre-rendering 3d background

VANILLAWARE MENTION 🎉🎉🎉
The hope is if I mention them enough they will Port their games to PC.
Is your name supposed to be pretty as in cute or pretty as in a moderately high degree?
I- I don't know. 🥺
@@prettycody You're a moderately high degree of cute, Cody.
