  • In this video, I take a look at the alternative brake pads that are available for Shimano road groupsets.
    In the past 3 years, we’ve struggled to obtain Shimano stock, and brake pads are no exception. So, I take a look at what alternative pads are available, and how they compare to the Shimano stock pads

    I have been using Gorilla pads since 8/2021 (around 15,000 miles now) and my experience is as yours. 100% agree with you about price and the Shimano cooling fins being unnecessary. I find they last much longer than the Shimano equivalents. The ones I use are for: Shimano Dura Ace BR-R9170 Ultegra BR-R8070 BR-RS805 BR-RS505 BR-RS405 BR-RS305 L02A - Enduro kevlar. Great videos - thanks.

    I just purchased some ceramic Bucklos pads from AliExpress. I'm going to give them a try them on my Shimano M7100s. I'm currently using Shimano J04C metallic pads and bought another two pairs of those for only $13.00 a pair. The Bucklos pads were $3.71 a pair and I bought 4 pairs of them.

    Audio is great, video is great too!
    Paid £35 for a pair off ebay recently, I think its peace of mind really, if ive spent a stack on Dura Ace Groupset I want everything working optimally so thats my mindset...if there is something like-for-like that wont mess up my discs or induce risk of failure then i'm all for it, saving money short term is good but if its a cost > value mentality then its not really worth it in the long run. Nice to know there are alternatives tho, cheers!
    I've replaced Dura Ace stuff with SwissStop products in the past which have been really good so i'd be interested to know what their disc pads are like.
    See you round the valley quite a bit by the way, I live in Alston, just past Longridge so its great to see another Valley rider putting out great content, good stuff Jon!

      @ribblevalleycyclist  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Nosh,
      I know what you mean, buying pads from the smaller unknown brands can be worrying, especially when, like yourself, you're running Dura Ace. I think it'd be worth keeping a set of Shimano K05s non-finned pads in stock, they're a genuine Shimano pad with the same compound as the L05, but just don't have the fins. You can pick those up really easy, most places have them in stock for £10.
      Never tried SwissStop for disc, used them for years on my rim bikes, a good product. The disc pads do seem to get some good reviews, not cheap though!!
      Sad to report that I've only just moved out of the Ribble Valley. Now on the edge of The Peaks. It's not bad, but it's not The Ribble Valley 😐. Have kept Ribble Valley Cyclist as the channel name, because I'm not sure what else to call it!!
      Thanks for getting in touch, good to hear from a fellow RV rider 👍

      @@ribblevalleycyclist Yeah, always loved the SwissStop stuff but again, pricey like you say, comparable to the DA stuff really so a decent switch when the Shimano well runs dry...as it regularly does!
      Ah, sad to hear you've left the area, Peaks is nice tho, not been round there for a while, got some cracking climbs around there, a lot of hidden gems aswell! Only just started back on the bike the past 2 weeks after 5 months out to be honest, managed to avoid covid till last Oct and was really ill with it, decimated my fitness for months...even now i'm only about 30% and crawling along.. not good, either that or the mid 40s are really taking hold!!
      Safe riding anyways Jon. Keep up the good work!

    Great video and sound is perfect (I love the YT Algorithm throwing your video up to me. Today I did a quick service and couldn't remove the retaining pin from my Shimano R8070. total disaster with the flat head screw which disintegrated. Managed to drill this out, but now there is no thread. Good job I did as the L03a pods had worn down to nothing. Mind you I've had the Orbea M20 for 3 years now, so good going?
    Algorithms aside and looking at the process now, Halfords are doing the L05a for £19 and the pads without the fins £10 at my local JE James.

    The Shimano pads are probably the best compound and avoid wearing/gouging your discs.
    The heat sinks are only present to reduce disc temperature in loooooonng descents. The same pad can be bought without heat sink for under half the price (as you correctly point out).
    I can confirm these are exactly the same as the finned ones.
    A lot of the third party pads, in my experience either provide poor performance/wear life in resin form…or sneakily add metallic content to make their pads perform better - thus shagging your discs.

    • @ribblevalleycyclist
      @ribblevalleycyclist  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dominic,
      You make a fair point.
      Been running disc for about 4 years now, on 3 bikes. I’ve tried various brands of pads with various compounds. I’ve also tried a few different rotor brands too. If I’m being totally honest, the only real difference I’ve even noticed is the squeal variation!! You may well be right, the cheaper pads may wear my rotors quicker. But then I suppose there is also the argument that cheap pads are a third of the price of posh Shimano ones, and new posh Shimano rotors are the price of two pairs of posh Shimano branded pads!! I suppose it boils down to miles per £/$/€….. Which I’m not even gonna try and work out😂
      Thanks for watching, mate.

    Didn't PT come to the same conclusion regarding hest sinks on the Shimano pads. I use Noah and Theo ceramic pads on my Ultegra brakes. Of course the pads and rotors wear. And since the rotors are much more expensive. You want the pads to be more sympathetic to that

    I’m across the pond in Louisiana. Following you after viewing your winter kit videos and Alpha Ros2 review.
    You should do a video on Disc Brake maintenance.. I’m about to buy my forst bike ever with Disc Brakes. Have avoided doing so for years, but the bike I really want has no other brake options.
    How often should brake fluid be bled and or replaced? How is it done? What tools are required? Thanks!

    • @ribblevalleycyclist
      @ribblevalleycyclist  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi again David,
      Yeah, I remember us having a chat about the Alpha RoS.
      Disc is good, a little frustrating at times, but the positives outweigh the negatives...... just! It's especially good for winter use.
      Yeah, I've considered both a bleed and a general maintenance video, I'm sure I'll get one of them done soon enough. In the meantime, the number 1 tip, don't get oil on them and get some disc cleaning spray!!
      The general rule with fluid replacement is to replace when the brakes feel spongy. If I'm honest, I've not replaced the fluid in my summer bike ever, and it's on over 7k miles now....... probably should do it, as they're a bit spongy!!

    • @dsonyay
      @dsonyay ปีที่แล้ว

      Good advice.. it’s the same as on a car. Same exact functioning. Keeping the disc clean is critical.
      I guarantee next the next thing bug thing on bikes will be ABS. Weve already got an electrical circuit available due to batteries .. all thats left will be a control module. Lol. Just you wait… it’ll happen.

    I'm sorry, but I have to disagree about the pricing information. Maybe it was correct at the time you made this video. I have been buying Shimano B01S pads for years. I have recently become aware that Shimano recommends B03S and B05S for the upgraded pad materials but which are physically identical to the B01S. Gorilla offers alternatives to the B01S and B03S for AUD 32 and AUD 42 respectively, not counting delivery. Yet Amazon sells the B05S for AUD 25 and free delivery (with Prime). I don't know anything about the materials and whether these make any difference. But it does seem I can get the latest genuine Shimano product, delivered, for less than the off-brand part delivered. Gorilla doesn't offer any price advantage at all.

    Does it matter for road pads whether they're resin, semi metallic, or metallic? I'm using SwissStop Catalyst rotors if that makes any difference

    • @ribblevalleycyclist
      @ribblevalleycyclist  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Resin/Organic - A great all-rounder that performs well in all weather conditions. The softer pad also offers a more even braking performance. Resin tends to come in a little cheaper, but will wear faster when compared to performance alternatives. Resin is kinder to the rotor, and is less prone to making noise in the wet.
      Sintered/Metallic - Sintered pads are known for their exceptional durability and heat resistance, making them the choice for downhill and extreme cycling. Sintered will last longer and out-perform a resin pad. Sintered pads can last unto 3 times longer than resin. The braking performance increase is noticeable. The downside to sintered is increased wear to the rotors, they’re more expensive, and are noisy in wet/damp conditions. Some manufactures claim their sintered pads have special ingredients that stop winter noise…… I’ve not found that this works.
      As an FYI, I prefer the softer quieter braking performance that the resin pad gives, so that is what I use.
      SwissStop Catalyst rotors are compatible with both sintered and resin pad compounds
      Hope this helps.
