I Spent 1 Year Transforming Land for Hay and Hunting

- This project started in the summer of 2022 mowing back the growth of that spring and thick brush. Reseeding areas that were bare and planting two food plots for the deer. I had Josie come out and learn to drive a manual for the first time even though she could barely touch the pedals. The footage spans from that summer and recaps what it turned into today. We were able to make some bales off the few acres of open grass this spring.

I would really like to try and get into farming once I get a little older. No one in my family is a farmer, but I hope that I’ll be able to try it out, even if it’s something small. I think continuing the hay is a great idea considering you aren't a big deer hunter.
If you diversified with clover and alfalfa, I think you can gain a lot of food for the deer at the same time as growing higher quality hay.

When I do food plots, I always put up like a fence around them, but always helps keeps deer off of them for a while. So it gives a crop a chance to grow.

Alfalfa is an excellent choice. On irrigated acres we get 4 cuttings. As I am in Washington I’m sure it is different over there, but alfalfa is an excellent hay crop. Very useful as well. We feed alfalfa to cows with excellent results. Deer will love it as well. Caution: the clover “leaf” part is where the nutrition is at, don’t lose it.
yeah alfalfa probably does better in our wet winters and dry summers (unless you are out on the eastern side of the cascades its quite a it dryer there)

I think that you should do alfalfa and clover mix because alfalfa makes some very nice hay and you can usually get two to three cuts off it every year and the clover should leave a nice bit of food for the deer in the fall

I am happy I came across your channel, and I think the hay part is a good long term thing to get it more even and some more grass, for example clover to get some nutrients into the soil

TH-cam has videos on bringing back old hay fields. I'm surprised nobody mentioned using a spike aerator on the field. Spike the field, reseed, and a few months later fertilize.

I bought a old farm in the north of sweden two years ago when i was 18. And I cleaned arround 2 acres just using basic tools and a old MF 35. That was a lot of work. I wish had machines like you man.

Interesting video. My son and I cleaned up about a mile of paths through my "Deer 40" this morning and made about another 1/4 mile of paths through the trees. He first went through with a grapple and I manned the chainsaw to cut anything he could not pick up, pull, or push over. Then he went through with a brush hog to chop up all of the smaller stuff.

There are some great summer grass mixes you should look into. The animals love them and they help to rebuild the soils

that was an awesome video, very interesting and educational also you may be better off with growing hay since deer and turkeys seem to wipe out every other thing that you plant, the property looks super you all did a great job of it

I can see your college education help you with your financials which is the most important when running a farm and it might take a couple of years but you will make a profit.. My Uncle and three cousin run a three-thousand acres farm a ranch together and I don't know how they do it. I visit them for a month and help them around the farm and it is hard work. Up at four in the morning and done sometime at ten at night. I lost forty pounds that month. I tell you it keeps you in shape. I am not sure if they farm the whole three thousand acres thou. I didn't ask .I did enjoyed riding their horses. My Uncle is eighty-five years old and he can get on those horses better than me at 68 years old. Great Video

get some soil samples done and see what is lacking or needed. we did this for years knowing when we needed to lime or spread pot ash to better the fields

If you are going to deer hunt do alfalfa because it has a lot protein that the deer like and it stays green in the fall when the other stuff is brown I hunt over alfalfa and I like it.
Great video. The one thing about alfalfa it's high calcium and makes for great antler growth. It always seems like the biggest bucks get harvested near the big alfalfa fields where I'm at in central MN. I think also if your selling the hay it has more value. You probably already know that you can buy round -up ready alfalfa so you can eliminate 95% if the weeds and grass. Then when it does get started and thick enough it chokes out the undesirable plants. Much more cost on that seed but the return might be worth it having pure alfalfa hay. They only negative might be that you wreck some turkey nests or hit a fawn when cutting the first crop but they can be in grass hay as well.

Alfalfa is high maintenance. You will have to cut it several times a year. Deer will usually prefer white clover over red. For hay the red is better, in my opinion. Iv had good luck with yellow clover (was told it was actually a lespedeza) for both deer and hay for stock. The neighbors horses loved it. Im in mid Missouri and can find out exactly what we planted if your interested.

just a tip stick welding something like that side on the dump bed would be better because stick is stronger than mig or flux cored im not sure if u got mig or flux but stick is more trustworthy but true mig is better than flux cored
Wait till spring, don’t do tillage, just seed it into the ground, get some with a disc drill if they can do fert and seed then do about 50-100 lbs of blend fertilizer per acre to the recommended 40-60 lbs alfalfa seed per acre, if they can only do 1 product, then do fertilizer first (side banding) then alfalfa, that way your keeping your grass and will have a good grass/ alfalfa mix in your field, that’s what everyone around me in east central Alberta does, the wildlife should easily not be able to keep up to the growth of the alfalfa grass mix, and all they’ll do is go after the grass not the alfalfa
Get a solar power electric fence for food plots and remove when it’s almost time to hunt
Spread you some chicken litter on it this fall will help build nutrients in the soil will make great hay for next season
Make sure you do your vertical welds uphill. Makes for much better penetration. What I’ve found is soybean plots have to be at least an acre to get any size to the plants at all
Could plant clover. With upkeep, it'll last 4-5 years. Plus you can mow it and bale it and sell those as well
I think you should keep it as hay because most people don’t want little alfalfa bales unless you know a lot of people that have a few horses
If you need rain come take it from Maine we have had to much water we were only able to get maybe 300 small squares in so far and usually were done first crop waiting for 2nd to grow
U could cut 2nd crop of hay this yr. Plow ,disc and seed winter wheat or rye. Roll it after planting to smooth out the ground. Cut and bale the wheat or rye off in early spring replant alfalfa and clover. Deer hunting over green winter wheat or rye this fall would bring in alot more deer than leaving the pasture grass as is.
Use oats or sorghum as your parent crop to keep pressure off of alfalfa

You could plant the alfalfa with a cover crop of oats the first year then spray it after the oats is off or the following spring. Once established i dont think the deer can keep up with 5 acres.
The deer will mow down the alfalfa. Maybe try a rye grass mix !!
Run a harow over it a lot then plant orchard grass and make dry hay off that

thats why i did my licens on a manual car i didnt want to have restrictions or a hard time with a manual i didnt look for the easy way i did the wright way and im proud to say now im happy that i can drive manual cars personaly automatic cars are boring nothing to do exept gas and at the end breack so i can shift the entire time im driving
Just watch your old clip of the till and burn of the fields. A couple of thing, watch clips of the great dust bowl. Way back, farmers over cleared got greedy. Had a dry year, wind blows all there top soil away. A good rule of thumb, always always keep a wind break.. diets blows away, the land go dead.
In the 70s, I had 40.000 acers under plow.
Every grain known to man. We built all the SILOS, concrete with gas blowers from the top of the Mississippi down to New Orleans's. Trust this, in farming big is not always better. Good luck.
Yeah the dust bowl is very intresting to learn about. The government giving away the land for pennies on the dollar may had something to do with it as well. You farmed 40,000 acres??

For alfalfa you need to do a soil test and see what your PH is…it really needs to be a 7 for alfalfa and if it’s lower than that don’t plant it until you get it around that level
You asked for comments on the type of videos you are making so here it goes. Don't change a thing that you're doing. I get it a lot of creators are doing this TH-cam thing as a living but honestly I think what you are doing to create revenue streams through your various endeavors will sustain you for years to come. I'd go to alfalfa. You can cut and bail if you want, the deer like it and its ez to grow with little cost. I'd also think of raising pheasants and start a little gun club!

Could you do some kind of fencing so the deere don’t ruin the alfalfa. Alfalfa is a good idea bc then you could get 3-5 cuts before winter

My 2 cents for alfalfa. Better $ return, and should be able to take minimum 3 cuttings off, maybe 4 some years. If possible, find a farm that can provide either cow or chicken manure to spread on the field before working it up.
