      In a previous line of work we used those jump boxes to great effect. They were able to jump quite a few vehicles before they needed any kind of recharge. The only issue I saw with them was with the cables and how they get stored. The clamp wore through the insulation of the wire. Electrical tape fixed it but it would have been nice if it had never happened.

      If it ever quits taking a decent charge, those things are essentially just hard shells with a small battery and leads inside. You can order replacement batteries for about 40-60 dollars and it's brand new again.

      My dad had a ford econoline van from 71 with a 390 in er. He gave er to me when she gave up. I rebuilt the engine, the transmission was a c4 but I replaced it with a m3.7 5 speed stick. An she would run like a turd constantly. But my uncle tore the engine down an put the original cam back in it an put er back together and she started running like a top. All I had to see was 390 and I was here! My old man had a 73 F250 with a 390 and a mild cam. That truck would roll! Had side-pipes on that bad boy back in the late 70's before he eventually went to cherry bombs. We always knew when dad was home from work. ;) He bought it in 77 with a 360 in it, rebuilt it to a 390 and drove it till around 2000 when the cab mounts and such were so rotted out that he didn't want to drive it. He would still start it every once and a while, though and it sounded awesome. He eventually sold the truck to a friend just for the motor. I'll always be a fan of the 390's.

    Love the 70s ford pickups. My dad had a 75 f100 4x4, 360, 4 speed. He had it for 20 years. Got it in 76 she went to the junkyard in 96. The old 360 had 213,000 miles on it when it went to the junkyard. Yes she still ran and drove. Dad didn't want to put the money into it. It needed a t-case. I was plowing snow and broke the t-case. The truck didn't have a straight body panel on it. Dad beat the hell out of it and she would ask for more just couldn't kill it. My buddy knows the guy who bought the engine out of it. Guess the guy put another 250,000 on the engine before it finally gave up.

    So, I realize that this truck is meant to be an old truck and stay stock, but that old 390 can make some real power with some careful machine work, some better rods and pistons, a nice supercharger, and a better transmission. I'm all about restomods and I LOVE to make old vehicles new again. My brother is restomodding his 74 Camaro Z28 and it's SO beautiful with flush fit glass and Corvette door handles. The underside of the car is painted just as nice as the top, and the frame was been sandblasted and powder coated years ago when we first restored it. He's had it ever since I was a kid and I'm 37 now.

    I always have liked FE motors, and you are right they are tuff. If you don't overheat them or over rev. them they keep on keeping on. One small suggestion.....It's rough to do when you're by yourself starting it from under the hood, but once you went into the cab, it would have cranked a little faster if you pushed in the clutch---especially in cold weather. I used to live near Chicago and it was about 0 F. when my friend and I went out to lunch. He drove a 65 small block Vette with a magneto ignition. He'd always maintained that I was full of hot air on pushing the clutch in to start it. He humored me and pushed the clutch in and he was amazed....it started right up. Then he let the clutch out with the gearshift in neutral and the car moved forward about 3 feet.

    Hello Luke, yeah that is a good package that 390 in a 4-speed with the granny gear. I had a 1970 1 ton Chevy 350 with the granny gear and a very low rear end to boot. That truck didn't go that fast, not that slow either but boy would she Hall load of stuff. I want put a pallet of 3/4 inch treated plywood in the back and she wouldn't even squat. They surely don't make new trucks the same as those old ones that's for sure. Anyway Luke what I wanted to tell you I hope that you and your new bride have a very merry Christmas and hopefully a better New Year for all of us. Stay safe stay well and as always God bless.

    I’m glad you got your F100 started so easily. In my experience my Holley 4150 on my 1969 Corvette, with an electric choke works flawlessly. Way better than the manual choke the carb was set up for at the factory.
    I have a complaint, not directed at you, but generated by you being able to buy alcohol free gasoline. Iowa is one of the largest corn producing states in the nation. Politicians from Iowa and other corn states pushed legislation to require gasohol as a way to reduce climate change (a whole other subject). SO, you in corn belt Iowa are able to buy pure gasoline, while we here in California are FORCED to use that 10% alcohol swill in all our gasoline powered stuff. And “they” want to raise the alcohol content to 15%!
    None of this is directed at you Luke, I just wish we could ALL buy real gasoline.

    Also I wouldn't worry about that exhaust leak. My '85 has had a leaky header for over 13 years(I've owned it that long and it chuffed like a steam train even then!) and it's not a big deal at all. Ol' 300 just keeps on tickin.

    Every FE engine I've ever owned always started well in the cold, but sometimes their carbs like to ice-up in certain conditions. Lastly, every since they stopped using propane as a propellant in carb/brake cleaner, it doesn't really work as a good starting aid anymore.

    • @ThunderHead289
      @ThunderHead289  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brakleen is now junk, but “carb cleaner” from parts stores is pretty potent yet

    • @markbremmer8642

      Use Chemtool for carb cleaner and starting fluid. Great stuff worth the price. O'Reilly carb cleaner is the same but at a lower price.

    Had a 1972 F100 4x4 360ci 3 speed (granny gear) with custom power steering. Sat for several years and one day I needed it more than anything. Knee deep snow, girlfriend was stuck in Downtown KC. I slammed a battery in the passenger floorboard , ghetto wired it and it fired right up with no hesitation. Drove it 50 miles without a single problem. Except the 4 wheel drum brakes, they will always suck, that is the only thing i really hate about that truck.
