  • Welcome to the first episode in my second Age of Wonders III Advanced Strategy series!
    This series will feature a free-for-all playthrough of Age of Wonders III, with a special emphasis placed on the deeper strategic elements of the game. It is designed to help intermediate players further develop their skills, but I also welcome suggestions for improving my own gameplay as well. I hope that this series will be a useful resource for everyone in the Age of Wonders community, so please feel free to share your thoughts and questions in the comments section!
    In this episode, I focus on how to manage units efficiently in the early game (especially the first turn). I also pick on the Halflings...a lot.

    Vault of knowledge would be pretty cool on flamers since it would open up a third channel of damage. Longbows don't get any new damage types once you have arcane arrows; they just get a buff to the damage they already do.
    Of course you'll have plenty of shock damage as a sorcerer but if you were, say, a Draconian warlord (whose mounted archers do physical/fire damage too), that would be pretty amazing.
    Also, you save 35 gold per city, but that often means you save a turn of production too. If you didn't have that vault of knowledge, I think picking the military option would be pretty bad since your apprentices do everything a flamer does only better.

    • @BlackArrowGaming
      @BlackArrowGaming  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I still like vault of knowledge a lot for longbows because fire arcane arrows is actually an entirely separate ability from fire longbow. It replaces most of the physical arrow damage with shock damage. In most cases, it seems to me that it is better to use regular arows with the little bit of additional shock damage that comes from the Vault of Knowledge. Fire arcane arrows is usually only worth it agains enemies with low resistance and high defense (like orcs) or enemies weak to shock damage.
      Dang though, Draconian mounted archers with physical/fire/shock damage sound amazing, haha. Draconian Warlord could be a fun class to try out in one of our games sometime.
      Yeah, I didnt use flamers a whole lot in the mid-late game so the economic bonus might have been just about as useful for me. I've just never liked those building discounts much since you only build them once per city. For some reason, I almost always prefer to go with the military patron bonuses. Once exception to this is the dwarves, since their crossbowman are so inferior to most other range units that I typically don't even bother making them al all. Dwarves also gave a much more useful Patron economic upgrade imo.

    • @vontosmagicmurderbag2611
      @vontosmagicmurderbag2611 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My issue with draconian warlords is they have sooo much fire stuff. Like their monster hunters do fire spit instead of a light crossbow. Half my units do fire damage, why do I want more? Flyers with martial arts is pretty cool though. Almost makes up for their lack of a tier 3 mounted unit.
      Actually I'm looking at the draconian page again and it looks like it's just the melee hit from their mounted archer that does fire damage. I think they just shoot a regular bow, so nevermind haha.

    • @BlackArrowGaming
      @BlackArrowGaming  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess that's part of the reason why an Elf Sorcerer doesn't appeal to me - too much focus on shock damage.

    I just started watching this again, and as you said,healing with a sorc in between battles kinda sucks.I have made it a habit to make an Item Forge fairly early in game,to make me the following items for all my heroes:Sword of Lifedrain,a bag of heal(you can make an item with heal,gives you in battle heal like druids/theocrats,the +side is,that it heals outside of battle as well),and a longbow or gun.I have a city dedicated to make these items,so that i have the items ready whenever i get a new hero.
    Just a thought,

    • @BlackArrowGaming
      @BlackArrowGaming  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's probably not a bad idea, as I often reach a point where I have more cities than I know what to do with. In the early game I'd probably still rather have gold and units as fast as I can get them. but in the mid-late game that could be useful. (Up until this game I had never actually used the item forge before, haha.)

    Also dude, when you get the option to do so, research the combat spell star blades. It isn't too expensive to research and only costs 5 mana/CP when your leader is present. For that price it is insanely strong. You can make your flyers practically demigods with the amount of damage it gives them, it's ridiculous

    • @BlackArrowGaming
      @BlackArrowGaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooh, that would combine very well with Draconian flyers. I have a ton of things that I want to research right now, but I will add that to the list!

      Bit late on this, but yeah, Star Blades is a fantastic spell for it's low price.
      I like to use it to buff all my melee if the enemy units are sitting on defense. Can make T1 units output T3 unit dmg, pretty awesome for 5 mana.

    • @BlackArrowGaming
      @BlackArrowGaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No kidding - it might be the cheapest combat spell in the game. Or one of the cheapest.

  • @kanuxass

    Like your videos, you could do a challenge playthrough someday, for example: make the max level of every hero 1, or make it so that there would be more units guarding building, or crank up the strength of roaming monsters.

    • @BlackArrowGaming
      @BlackArrowGaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are some good ideas! I probably won't limit hero levels because leveling up heroes is one of the most fun parts of the game for me, but the stronger defenders and roaming armies might be fun. I will keep this in mind, thanks!

    • @kanuxass
      @kanuxass 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem, i just thought that since the games are so dependant on heroes that it could be interesting to try a game where they're almost worthless

    • @LloydsGamble
      @LloydsGamble 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Playing on a slower game speed makes the game quite different too.
      It affects research time and city growth time, but nothing else. So you can still build units as normal. Means you have to rely on your racial troops more in the early - mid game as your class troops are slower to research.
      I found limiting heroes to just 1-2 plus your leader also quite interesting. They become that much more important and you have to think about where on the map you need them most.
      Just a couple of ideas for a possible future game ^

    • @BlackArrowGaming
      @BlackArrowGaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never tried that on this game, but I did a few games like that in Civ V. It slowed the game down a bit too much for my taste, but made waging war more interesting since units didn't get outdated as quickly

  • @chickenhed
    @chickenhed 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ok I have a question that I could never quite figure out. You gave your army "charged army" which increases their melee attack by 1 electric damage. Yet (and I'm just using this as a random example), at 38:50 your dwarf hero does 4 electric damage on his melee attack. How did that happen?

    • @BlackArrowGaming
      @BlackArrowGaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      This has to do with a number of factors for how the game calculates damage. My Dwarf has 1 point of electric attack strength, but that does not necessarily mean it would only do 1 damage. Defense, shcok resistance, and overall resistance are also all factored in. Other bonuses (like charge and war cray) may also boost the damage output as well.
      If you've every played pokemon, think of it like that. Just because a move like earthquake has an attack power of 100, that doesn't mean it will always do 100 damage. the enemy's defense and type advantages/disadvantages are also taken into account, which change the overall amount of damage dealt in terms of HP.

    • @diairairship2403
      @diairairship2403 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      If you want some specifics...
      The default formula is "Strength - defense + 10". In the case of elemental damage, replace defense with resistance.
      The Orc Impaler has 8 Resistance. Since Charged Army grants 1 shock strength, that means the base damage of Charged Army vs an Orc Impaler is "1 - 8 +10 = 3"
      Finally, there's a damage range of +/- 20%, rounded to nearest whole number, meaning that the 3 damage can hit for either 2, 3, or 4 damage. In this case it rolled high and we got 4 damage.
      There are a couple other factors, like the Pike Square ability of the Impaler which grants him +3 Defense against mounted units, but since Shock is an elemental attack it doesn't get affected by the extra defense at all.

    Do you consider using the forge a waste of money or just kind of cheesy?

    • @BlackArrowGaming
      @BlackArrowGaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest, I've never bothered with it simply because I've never felt it was that important. Normally by the time I have the time and money to spend building items at a forge, my heroes already have more items than I know what to do with. That being said, since I've never messed around with it, I don't know much about it. Maybe it is more useful than I'm giving it credit for, haha.

      I always just build one for the empire quest, and then I forge an item with the Dominate ability. It has a 13 spirit check, which is really high, and can be used multiple times per battle. Really great ability for a hero, although since you're a sorcerer, your tier IV units will already have it.

    Why would you need phantams warriors when you can just summon hell hounds instead, and they're already researched. Hell Hounds will combine with your Hellfire, Skin of Oil and Draconian Supports greatly, while Phantams Warriors won't.

    • @BlackArrowGaming
      @BlackArrowGaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hell Hounds do combine nicely with some of my other abilities, but I wanted Phantasm Warriors quite badly for three reasons:
      First, phantasm warriors make a nice, defensive front-line infantry unit to hide my more fragile support units behind. They have shields and physical resistance, which make them great at tanking most types of damage. The Draconians don't have any armored or shielded units, so Phantasm Warriors also fill that gap nicely.
      Second, Phantasm Warriors do a little bit of shock damage. I already have plenty of fire units to go around (plus fire magic), so diversifying my damage output seems like a good idea. As an added bonus, they have inflict shocking, which can make other units more vulnerable to the inflict stun effect that I will soon have on all of my support units.
      Third, one of my shadowborn abilities (I think it is called "embrace darkness") gives all of my infantry units life stealing. Phantasm Warriors are infantry, so they get it too, which makes them even better :)

    • @ВладимирКоролёв-х1м
      @ВладимирКоролёв-х1м 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I've won against 3 and it wasn't too hard. As usual you should just be aggressive enough and try to attack unexpectedly (try to make them don't see you the turn before attacking the city). But I was playing draconians, they are probably too easy race for that challenge.

    • @BlackArrowGaming
      @BlackArrowGaming  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My goel is to try to take at least one of them out very quickly. Emperor AI enemies build so many units, it's easy to get overwhelmed if the game drags on for too long. Good advice, thanks!

    • @BlackArrowGaming
      @BlackArrowGaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Whatever you are interested in :) Certain races do combine well with certain classes (for example, Orcs make good Theocrats because their Crusaders get the Tireless ability). However, there are virtually endless combinations of race/class/specializations that you can experiment with. I would say it is best not to worry about picking the best class - just pick something that sounds like fun to you!
      The Tome of Wonders is a useful resource for race/class/specialization information if you want to use it. In order to do so, you need to start a game and then click the book in the top left. Under "game concepts," search for "race." To see different class and specialization information, look under "skills" and use the drop-down menus.
      If you want a good all-around race, I would suggest starting with humans. They are pretty basic and have no real strengths or weaknesses (at least in terms of elemental resistance and general stats), so they can kinda do a little bit of everything.
