The best Zeppelin song is usually the last one I listened too.

You absolutely nailed it about JPJ's bass line. In fact, he Shines on every single Led Zeppelin recording. All four of them are absolute monsters at what they did and it was just the right time at the right place.
But as a musician of many years and even decades, this way of listening to music is just the default mode for me. And in fact, if you haven't done it before, pick a song like this and just listen to One instrument all the way through. Just listen to the bases playing all the way through.
If you do, it's kind of like when you first drive a car and you're glue in your eyes to the road and you're really uptight because operating a heavy vehicle like this which you've never really done a whole lot before is a really daunting task. And then later, probably to a fault, we conversed freely with our fellow passengers and it's just as easy. It's easy. And then you can go back and listen to it again only listening to John Bonham on the drums. And so forth. So it actually takes many lessons of even a given song to really start to understand it from a musical point of view. And then there is the lyrical content so it's truly a multidimensional universe, and I love it.

Listened to Led Zep all my life, the impact has never worn off. Never thought I’d get a tattoo , but got a Led Zeppelin tattoo for my sixtieth birthday so I can take them to my grave :)

Your reactions are great. That's why I'm subscribed. I think what I love most about them is the way you'll get mad at a song for being so good. "F Off!!" Yes I realize that's your way of saying "Wow, that's really awesome," but it still tickles me every time you do it!😏

    • @ontheroad5317

That got me too! When there’s a particularly good moment in a song, he’ll get angry at it! “Oh f_ck off!!” and start the song over again! It just cracks me up, because I get it!

Don't get me wrong: "In the Evening" is a FINE song, a kick-ass monster delivered as only Zeppelin can. BUT (You knew a but was coming, right, lol!) there are two OTHER songs by them that begin with the word "IN" that are even better! "In the Light" and (ESPECIALLY!) "In my time of dying"!! "In the light" has got one of the nastiest riffs known to human ears, and "In my time of dying" (STUDIO VERSION!) has some of the best, most THUNDEROUS drumming John Bonham ever did!

This is your first dip into 'In Through The Out Door', their last proper studio album.
Just before this album started recording, John-Paul Jones [ Bass & keyboards ] had taken delivery of a Yamaha GX-1, [ the 'Dream Machine' ] an experimental analogue synthesizer test bed. At the time, it cost about £60k, about the same as a very good house. Only probably a dozen left Japan. Stevie Wonder had " a couple " [ J-P J ], Keith Emerson had one [ see the 'Fanfare for the Common Man' video shot in a snowy Montreal stadium ]. It had 2 fully polyphonic keyboards, plus a monophonic, and also a bass pedal board. That's probably the source of the very deep bass in the intro. The machine was an absolute monster for its day, and because Jonesy was first into the studio he had a lot ready when the others arrived. It has a profound effect on the sound of the whole album.
After the band broke up following Bonzo's death, Jonesy swapped the GX-1 with Keith Emerson for a sofa [J-P J ], who basically used it for spares. It later passed to another avant-garde musician, and its remnants appeared at auction a couple of years ago, minus some key components and the pedal-board.

Man, you've got to check out really this whole album side of their last album. This is side A. And the next one up is southbound Suarez. It is one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs ever. And then after that is full in the rain, where John Bonham just blows your mind. And that is followed by hot dog, which is their bizarre Whimsical attempt at a country song and yet it's still just like Barnyard Rock and it ends up being fantastic. It's so fun.

Those of us who know the song were waiting for two things here:
    1. The grand entrance of the full band after Robert Plant first says, “In The Evening”
    2. The crashing guitar sound at the beginning of the solo

  • @stevedahlberg8680
    @stevedahlberg8680 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As a long time musician, I would say you're doing it just right. That's exactly what I do, I just Bop around and land on whatever I want to examine at the time and then sometimes I allow myself to just exclusively grab onto that and just feel it and of course you're listening to everything else going on and it gives it even better spatial separation and clarity. And then you change. And there are so many possibilities for that that you go back and listen to the song over and over again. Sometimes in a row and sometimes after several years over and over again. It's wonderful.

In Through the Out Door has “only” 4 classic songs in it, two of the most played LZ songs on the radio ..Fool in the Rain , All my Love and 3 of Jimmy’s best solos - In the Evening , Fool in the Rain and I’m Gonna Crawl.
Yes for LZ standards are high ...for any other band this would be there magnum opus.

Good on you Mark. Okay, I have the luxury of having listened to them both from the beginning, and having seen them both live too, so I think your method of picking the lesser payed ones is fabulous. More power to your elboa and for goodness sake... Keep on Rocking..... Even if it's just for my amusement and pleasure... Love every moment of your reactions.

Drugs were flowing through this era (not that they've ever stopped) but you can feel the influence and JPJ's greater influence as Jimmy struggled through his heroin addiction...he was still playing better than 99.9% of the guitarists at the time and as a Generation Xer its much easier to appreciate their brilliance and talent amongst the other members, despite the struggles Page went through. As we now know, Bonham was also struggling but bashing those drums for therapy...we get to hear those therapy sessions and they are gold!
