  • Max Verstappen of Red Bull clinched pole position for the 2024 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, leading the Ferrari SF-24 cars of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. The qualifying session held yesterday deviated from the usual tactical script. The Miami track posed significant challenges for the engineers, with its 45-degree track surface inhibiting the drivers from achieving their final evolutionary step in performance. Numerous errors occurred during the final push lap, attributed to the unpredictable nature of the track.
Additionally, Formula 1 teams such as McLaren and Mercedes attempted to optimize their performance in Q3 by opting for a run on medium tires. This decision was based on the belief that the harder compound would reduce sliding. However, this strategy failed to yield improved lap times for the W15 and MCL38, with drivers achieving their best times using the softer compound in subsequent runs. Despite initial promise, this tactic ultimately eroded drivers' confidence.
Upon analyzing telemetry data related to average speeds at corner apexes, McLaren emerges as the fastest in directional changes. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri capitalize on the pointing setup and mechanical front grip generated by the pull-rod suspension. Norris, equipped with the complete update package, outpaces his teammate. In slow corners, Charles Leclerc's performance mirrors that of the Woking team's drivers, albeit with tires not optimally suited for the second sector of the Miami International Autodrome in Florida. Leclerc maintains a higher apex speed average than the Red Bull duo even in corners 5 and 8, prioritizing entry over exit.
Mercedes encounters challenges at turn 8 due to tire issues, hampering the car's performance after a brief period of load due to excessive energy input on the compounds. Furthermore, Red Bull has adjusted its corner management approach compared to Friday. Lower speeds relative to opponents signify a deliberate strategy to sacrifice corner entry to optimize traction on exit and gain advantage on straights.
