i love this analysis so much. i've been teetering on the edge of coming to a similar conclusion about the color theory of itsay, but i never would have been able to articulate it so well. this show has had such a profound impact on me and you put so many of the reasons for that (literally all of the scenes with hoon had me sobbing) into words. i really needed this, thank you

first of all please don’t apologize for rambling!! I absolutely LOVED hearing your thoughts on my video 💕 And wow, you’re totally right about the emotion disconnect and I wouldn’t have made that connection before about Teh’s mom vs. Oh-Aew’s parents. Super astute observation! But anyways thank you SO much for the feedback and this was genuinely so nice to read!

Wow okay, that just suddenly explains so many things. The fact that Oh Aew was so open about how he felt about Teh could be explained by how he came from a family that didn't put a lot of burden on him (whether it be in the form of studies or financial situation).
While in the conversation with Hoon, the first thing Teh said was how he was scared of what his mother will think of him. When someone grows up in an environment that expects a lot from you, you end up trying to show a perfect side of yourself to them all the time. In a place where homosexual relationships are looked down upon, acting on his feelings for Oh Aew was like a luxury that Teh could not afford like Oh Aew could.

I think it shouldn't be just qualified as "best thai BL" It's actually one of the best productions that I've ever seen, I'm a cinema lover and criticist, I analyze every detail on direction, sequency, symbolism, photography, interpretation and many other relevant points to call a movie/series a "masterpiece" and I Told Sunset About You, is one of them. It genuinely transmits you, everything without say unnecessary words, it"s portrayed beautifully poetic, it's like living in a dream, a dream where you wake up just in the edge of the feelings, and that's how it is fall in love, as a teenager, with so much pressure and emotions overpassed. This, is so accurate, also, most of LGB teenagers experience the same and feel very saturated and confussed dealing with the explossion that they feel inside specially when is your best friend the person you've fallen for, when you are a male and that's cultural seen as "incorrect" all the fear and pressure and frustration you can see in the eyes of both characters, but the love, caring, tension, it shows simultanealy. Also, but this is most for personal experience, I'm a bisexual men who had so much struggle accepting his own sexuality, I had a similar story with my ex best friend, what this show did to me is heal, heal every part that before when I was 17 I tought it was "bad, sick" this productions capture the purity of love, how the developement goes. A masterpiece.

Okay, shit. As a film enthusiast and die hard fan of ITSAY, this video was absolutely divine. I don't think I can speak enough about not just the colour but every single aspect of this show. Boss Kuno is an absolute legend with a kind of artistic mind that is rare. The last time I felt so deeply about a film or series was 'call me by your name' as it too possessed this dreamy vibe with its mesmerising music and poetic quality. However ITSAY outdid it.
Kudos to you for making me miss this show like hell, all over again. My heart yearns for the season 2 but at the same time just wants to go back to rewatch and fully grasp the first season itself.

I don't know if you've seen the accompanying commentary/documentary series the director made. One thing he mentions specifically is that the moment when Teh put his head on his brother's shoulder wasn't in the script or the storyboard or the workshop. It was entirely spontaneous. The director was about to call cut, and then let it play out.

Thank you so much for this analysis. I saw the colors but your perspective was like putting on glasses to see. A whole other video could be done for the use of music. The adaptation into various versions of the songs from the soundtrack was brilliant. But my favorite use is the solo piano piece used in episode 3 in the gathering room as the others go off to their rooms. First, Teh is left with Philip as his roommate, then is alone, then Oh-Aew joins him, there are shared moments, then Bas walks in. The accents and tensions of the music match perfectly with the scene.

    • @leighhennessy8212

I heard that as well! It starts lighter with some discordant tones when Teh realises they would be sharing beds and when Aew picked Bas it kicked up the volume and the discordant tones increased becoming a cacophony of noise that isn't music. This isn't within his control it's the absolute loss of control. It's meant to be emotional turmoil and, in the case of Teh, even stronger because he is still trying to deny how he feels and still trying to control what happens( which is very important to him). It matches the movement which is aimless and jarring when he is left on his own (and in his head). The rasp of him dragging his hand over the footstool is trying to express his feelings and I think its interesting that is the only sound anyone else can hear and on its own it would grate in the ears. Tbh I don't think this was meant to be considered music but as part of the soundscape. Music is used through the show but it it's usually in balance with whats happening.

I love this bl sm , i've quite watched a lot of bls till date but the day i binged watched itsay , it totally stood out for me. I was so invested and each episode was captivating. the actors did a great job , the cinematography, music, theme , locations, aesthetics, small details, teenage love, coming of age, pain, confusion, desperation, love, friendship and that feeling of loosing someone, everything was done so beautifully that it almost near crazy. it's been past a year when i first watched this drama and to this date I always have it on my top of list. the emotions and watching experience i went through was totally new and magical. it all felt hitting home. i related to a lot of parts and cried my eyes out for so hours after watching some scenes. Teh and Oh-aew are my favourites fs. talking about it the problem with both Teh and Oh-Aew is that they don't stick together. The moment something happens they switch off communication, cut cords, ignore each other completely. But they can't let go of each other. They keep thinking about each other. But both can't happen simultaneously, you either care or you don't and their conflict is that they do care but are forced to show that they don't. and i love this part about the drama because this is realistic and often happens bw people irl. i like how they portrayed everything , honestly i still have sm to talk , like the sound , few particular scenes , the story , and other characters like bas , teh's brother etc who actually made the show even more perfect with their respective roles but by ending it here id like to say this drama is a real masterpiece!

    I still can't properly pronounce Oh-Aew's name.
Thank you Pastellyn for taking the time and effort to share your knowledge and view on this work of art. When I watched the trailer for this series it immediately captured my interest and I recall saying to myself: I think this is going to break my heart.
I think this production took an enormous amount of creative energy from more than just the cast. The other major part of this story was its setting. Phuket was a beautiful silent partner that helped maintain the spell this story cast.
Wow, is my best and lamest word to describe your analysis. I'm so glad it impressed you so that you could share this perspective. I think talking about some of what was portrayed and shown in this production, and the follow-on documentary episodes, really helped better understand much of the detail that couldn't be absorbed.
I'm so glad to see they've already gone ahead with the next season and that we won't have to wait long for it. I hope the passionate journey this first season gave us can be shifted to a new chapter in their story and that the outstanding supporting cast, Tarn and Bas in particular, also have significant roles.

Pastellyn, You are something else. You have highlighted Sun Mork in DBK, I told Sunset about you and 3 will be Free. Just so happens that these are three recent series that have blown my mind., and I revisit quite frequently (But I would have to include Gaya si pelikula (Like in the Movies) in this list. What you also mention are the colour pallets used in # Will be Free ( shades of dark red and dull lighting in a noir-ish style), and in I Told Sunset about You( with slightly faded yellow, cream and earth tones) rooting the story in that small-town Chinese-Thai community

Wow, I am amazed by this review!! As somewhat of a literary analysis nerd, I love diving into symbolism and dissecting characters, though I find this harder to do for shows and movies when much of the messages or visual rather than directly written out. I recognized the colors were an important aspect of the show, yet you gave me a whole new mind blowing perspective to it. Great work!! I especially love how at the end you mention it's like a rebirth, a new beginning. That message seems to carry over from the sunset too: the sun is setting on their past worries and tomorrow brings a new horizon. Lovely show now excuse me as I sob a river :')

    i really love this analysis!
i remember watching project s: side by side and had thought of a resemblance of it with itsay because of the color symbolism (like i thought gym just likes pink but it turned out he wears pink bc it's his mother's fav and wearing pink makes him an indiction of being his son), the character development (from being unable to tie a shoelace, shave, and even open up a biscuit until gym can finally do it after days), and specially, the beautiful shots. until i've realized p'boss kuno was also the director of that series! p'boss really produces magic.
well, i'm just stressing how it was really planned wonderfully by the director and the team, and how bkpp remarkably portrayed the characters that made it ✨ a masterpiece ✨

The color thing is super interesting and I absolutely love your analysis, as always. I need people like you because I never notice those things. :")
Personally, I can understand why people would be mad at Teh, he also did frustrated me from times to times, but I think he was well written enough so that it's somewhat easy to understand his feelings and his actions. Or maybe I just relate to him haha. I did not like that he kept unintentionally hurting oh-aew (the guy was so soft and sweet, he always looked like a kicked puppy), but his character makes sense. First, they are teenagers, and oh-aew really comes and shatters what teh thought he knew about himself. He clearly goes through an identity crisis and a self discovery journey, with all his feelings towards oh-aew, along with the pressure of him wanting to make his mom proud. He finds it scary to have feelings for his guy friend, and he doesn't know how to handle them. I think itsay handled his character really well, even if sometimes i wanted to shake him a little (Especially when he made oh-aew cry, my heart felt for him). When not well written, these kind of characters can come off as annoying (in my opinion), but i think teh just felt really human. I think he just needed time to process his feelings and accept himself.
Also yes, I was scared at first that they would ruin Tarn, but no, they called me clown and made her probably the best female character I have seen in a bl.

You’re so right about Teh!! I feel like in most instances I would end up disliking his character, but because of the writers’ dedication to making him feel real, I sympathized with Teh as he struggled through his identity crisis. That’s a big part of what makes ITSAY genius, in my opinion: the characters feel like actual teenagers. (And no worries about long comments, I love reading them!) Glad you enjoyed this video!

Nice work, very well done analysis. brilliant. thank you.
btw in the documentary the director mentioned that the scene when Hoon told Teh to not wake the mother, but still cuddled his head, was the actor's improvisation. as a result the award of the best big brother ever goes to Hoon. :) as usual melodrama is not just about love, it's always about family, it's not just two lovers, it's their environment (even though we love to think we are so independent): Oh-aew has supportive parents, Teh has a mother who wants him to conform to norms, to blend in.
overall: I love the series - it's one of the best screenplays I've come across for ages. and beautifully executed in many ways.

@@Pastellyn I just recalled what I wanted to tell you re: colour analysis. Yin/yang. Main characters have black/white combo shirts twice. As the series and it's symbolic is vastly inspired by Chinese culture it gives an important meaning: they are two sides of the same coin. And Teh (black) is passive in many respects, like yin, while Oh-aew is yang, strong and initiating (he may look and behave like a seductive siren but he is much stronger than Teh).

    • @Pastellyn
      @Pastellyn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I wish I had a brother like Hoon, too! And what a cool interpretation of the show's color scheme, I never even considered Yin/Yang dynamics. That could also explain why red/blue are so common as red is often associated with fire (strength) and water (passivity).

This is a wonderful analysis. It brings back to me all the emotions of watching ITSAY (which I haven't picked up in a couple of months.) The only thing I would suggest is an analysis of the musical choices in ITSAY -- the use of piano and choral versions of the main sound themes. (The "confession" scene is fantastic, from that PoV.) That would be a great complement to your visual analysis.

To be honest I have very mixed feelings about the BL genre as a whole, but this show is a masterpiece and it feels to be a disservice to it's quality to limit it to being simply a BL show (like some reviewers do from what I've seen). It feels like a coming-of-age cult classic and you summarise my feelings on this show completely. I'm excited for season 2, and it's really set the bar high for shows about teenage romance and BL shows as a whole.

    • @Pastellyn

I share the same opinion as you- as an lgbt person myself, it rubs me the wrong way when Asian shows/movies with any form of representation are automatically categorized as “BL” as the BL genre tends to be ... problematic, to put it gently. Hopefully, ITSAY’s success will open a lot of doors for more positive representation in Thailand and in BLs. Thanks for watching!

IDK so many people have a problem with Teh and how he reacts but Idk why I get it. I think because so many people focus on how he hurts Oh-Aew they forget that in doing so he also hurts himself. Because he's unable to reconcile how he feels and what's "expected" of him he ends up hurting Oh and simultaneously hurting himself. Rejecting Oh causes Teh way more pain than he thought it would because without Oh he finally realizes how much he cares about him. 😢

My thought process watching Teh sacrifice his guaranteed spot at university: IMO, he didn’t actually do it for his friend or out of love. He did it because he didn’t trust Oh-Aew. At least not on a conscious level. He didn’t actually believe in him that he could still achieve his dream. Which makes the sacrifice even more bitter for Oh-Aew. He wanted Teh to see him for who he was and what he could accomplish in his way, but Teh’s stubbornness wouldn’t allow it.
I suppose that fits the blue scheme with Teh. He refuses his feelings, which gives him a warped image of Oh-Aew. It’s not until the end when he has accepted both him, and his university situation, that he is able to see everything clear with the vivid sunset and be ready to move forward and grow as his own person.

    • @Pastellyn
      @Pastellyn  ปีที่แล้ว

Interesting! Looking back I kind of see Teh's decision as him guilt-tripping himself; reflecting on his treatment of Oh, he convinced himself he didn't deserve the scholarship. But I can totally see your interpretation working, too!
