The Sanskrit Yasna and Its Philological Project
The Sanskrit version of the Yasna, which is the Zoroastrian long liturgy, is a peculiar text in many ways. The manuscripts that contain it are generally bilingual, including the Avestan original followed by the Sanskrit version. The latter, however, is mostly based on an intermediate version in Middle Persian, indicating a systematic two-step translation process. This paper examines, through examples, the structure of the text and the context of its compilation. It also proposes a new method for editing the Sanskrit Yasna, considering it a sophisticated philological project.
