- It is often said that the 18th Century was a period of chaos in India. However, it can be more appropriately called a period of transition. The long period of rule by the Turks, Afghans and Mughals gave way to a new indigenous Empire that arose from south of the Narmada; the first time a people from the Deccan entered Hindustan. Dr Kulkarni believes it was an important historical era where we had an indigenous Empire before we fell under another spell of foreign rule.
From the mid seventeenth to early nineteenth century, the Marathas came into prominence and their objective throughout the period remained Delhi. From a bestower of favours, the Emperor was reduced to a Maratha protectorate. This talk is on this eventful period, when the Maratha flag appeared and fluttered in Delhi through most of the 18th century.
One of the Dream of Shivaji Maharaj is to build all the temples destroyed. Majority of North temples are rebuilt by Marathas.
But sadly they didn't librate Kashi Vishwanath temple from gyanwapi mosque though they had a chance.

Actually it was Planned that as nadir saha left delhi the rajputana confideracy tried to put back Maharana of Mewar on the throne of Delhi with support of Baji Rao Pehswa but at time peshwa died and his brother also died few months later.. A big Blow to Maratha

Mr.Uday Kulkarni has taken his inspiration from Mr.Ninad Bedekar who was a real historian , Engineer & Vice president in corporate group Cummins. He could understand the 3-4 languages spoken at the time from 16th century to 19th Century. He had decoded letters written at that time . The Marathi language which is spoken today or urdu language which is spoken today was completely different from 16th Century.

There is a remarkable resemblance between the conquests of Kannada Rastrakootas in first millennium of Indian history and the Marathas of 18 th century
Both were from deccan below the vindhyas but reached up to ganga yamuna in north and kaveri in south and managed to rule over almost whole of subcontinent at some point of time

You forgot to name Sambhaji Maharaj here who for 7 years didn't let Mughals touch Maharashtra.

@@swatit9372 You are absolutely wrong during Sambhaji Maharaj's lifetime the Maratha territory in Katnataka was doubled, the Marathas conquered northern territories of the Portuguese, the territories in Khandesh were added, the Marathas raided the Mughal city of Burhanpur in today's Madhya Pradesh, Mysore paid tribute to the Marathas,yes Marathas did loose 4-5 forts to Mughlas but they also added more 4-5 forts from Mughals it was after the death of Sambhaji Maharaj that a considerable amount of territory was lost to the Mughals but it was a gained regained.

True. It's very common across a perticular caste of historian to avoid teaching or mentioning about what Chatrapati Sambhaji did. Actually due to ch. Sambhaji only Aurangzeb had to stayed back to MH for 27 years and still he couldn't finish Marathas. It's simple, if he could have done that, then he would have left to his own capital rather than staying back in south. He mentioned many times that he thought after Chatrapati Shivaji, he can try extending Mughal empire to Deccan, but he was so unfortunate that Chatrapati Sambhaji was even better than his father. Aurangzeb also mentioned that he would have been fortunate if any of his son could be as brave and thoughtful as of Chatrapati Shivaji's son.

So true the story of Marathas has been erased from Delhi. Maybe its because Hindus and Muslims dynasties were working together, and being loyal to each other to extend. Maybe that kind of image is not something the politicians of India want the two communities to have.

He pretended to be neutral but in those days that is 1826 when the History by Grant Duff came out, it had to be vetted and screened by cunning disciples of Richard Wellesley, namely John Malcolm, Mountstuart Elphinstone, Arthur Wellesley and some new disciples.

This fellow Dr. Kulkarni is an apologetic to the foreigners. The past must not be forgotten. All profits and abuse be be given reparations to the descendants of the victims of that time. Cruelty was always wrong and was against their own respective religious beliefs and their systems.
This is a bizarre comment about Surgeon Commander Uday Kulkarni formerly of the Indian Navy and now the premier historian of Maratha history.
I just have one say, Sir, should we not mention Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as Maharaj Or Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj? We cannot in our dreams just mention him as Shivaji.

We talk a lot about SHIVAJI MAHARAJ'S battles but we never talk about SHIVAJI MAHARAJ'S ideology of SWARAJ . First of all SHIVAJI MAHARAJ was not against Islam .we know that Shivaji Maharaj killed Afzal Khan but do you know that Noor Khan baig a Muslim was the commander of Shivaji Maharaj's army during this incident. I am reading in comments that many people are madly saying that Shivaji Maharaj wanted to destroy mosques which is not true even if today you visit Shivaji Maharaj's forts you can see that there are mosques on that forts where muslim soldiers of maratha army used to pray.
Shivaji Maharaj was a very tollerant towards all religion.
SWARAJYA basically implement's our rule people's rule which is the base of today's concept of democracy.

Looks like the Marathas though excelled in land based warriors their negligence of their navy and management of finances seems to have led to their eventual downfall
The main cultprit of their demise was that they had started fighting within themselves by the 19th century.
Marathas lost the whole second line of leadership in 3rd battle of panipat ... there was a vaccum of leadership on the maratha side.... adding to this, inefficient Peshwa and sardars of confederacy made maratha empire even weak .... they started fighting among themselves (Battle of Poona) , they fought with British separately in 2nd anglo matratha war and were defeated ...had they fought together the history of India would have been different

In Karnataka i recently heard that Martha's looted the temples in Karnataka . Shringeri Math also not Spared .Girish karnada was also present in debate on the subject of controversial TIPU SULTAN jayanthi. Please explain is it happened Hindu king looted Hindu temple.? Infact karnatak land was very helpfull after death of Chatrapati Sambhaji maharaj's murder.......because if rest family wasn't came to karnataka , whole Maratha empire royal family (first and last hindu empire) could be dead by 10 lakhs of Muslim soldiers of Aurangzeb on Raigad Fort (western ghat).
