Hi Dennis Cant recall the last time you had to replace a bad main gear ? Glad you solved the mystery ! Just came across a virtually new Penn 750SS, Shimano TLD 15, Zebco Abu Cardinal 7 and Shimano Aero 4000. All in really excellent shape, plus 15 salt water lures and Magnum box to go with them. Best Wishes to you and those unfortunately affected by Hurricane Helene, Cons
In general I like these reels a lot. I have many of these Penn SS spinning reels and the 550ss was my first in the series. In fact just yesterday I got my second 650ss. You did an excellent diagnosis of what was wrong with this reel. It was a shame to see a reel damaged like this. It was a great lesson to teach. I’m sure that if you can find the gear(s) needed for this one you can give it a second chance. - Chris
Wow - sounds like you it the mother lode Cons and that you are back int he game! Enjoy your finds and yes - watching the coverage of the hurricane now - Best wishes - Dennis
I've seen a few of those aluminum gears that penn used in the 550SS over the years fail with worn teeth in a section of the gear. I believe the softer aluminum mated to the bronze pinion gear under stress can cause failure sooner rather than a bronze main gear which you would find in the larger 650, 750, 850SS models.
You are correct. The mismatched metals definitely wear faster that two of a kind - Nothing wrong with aluminum gears, Mitchell used them in the 300 series, but under strain, the lesser metal will always fail - Best wishes - Dennis
I have a 7500 SS but the chrome screw on side that hold the spool is loose doesn't get tight I don't know if their was something in the threads holding it.
Great tips and explanation. Thankyou.

Sounds like the threads are worn or broken. Check the screw and the internal threading in the case. One or both may need to be replaced - Dennis
A very nice Reel if you can get the Repair Parts !
Yes - so true. Check parts availability before buying one that needs repair
Hi Dennis, could you recommend a touch up paint to do some small spots on my 650 ss? Thanks
Generally I try to color match with an automotive spray paint in a rattle can.
