    Summary:
Few rock bands that emerged in the 1970s have achieved career longevity until the present day. One of the notable exceptions is the hard rockin' Canadian trio Rush. The group's 1974 self-titled debut and the follow-up album Fly By Night, issued the following year, created a buzz among heavy rock aficionados, but little else. The third album, Caress Of Steel, found the band beginning to create a hard-edged form of progressive rock (quite unlike its British progressive-rock counterpart) that confused as many fans as it gained. The breakthrough would finally occur upon the release of Rush's fourth album, 2112 in March of 1976. An ambitious concept album that explored a dystopian future, with lyrics influenced by the philosophical writings of Ayn Rand, 2112 found Rush striking a new balance between heavy and progressive rock that established all three members as highly accomplished instrumentalists. Arguably the band's signature album, 2112 would be lambasted by critics, yet gained the band a rabid global following that remains strong to the present day.
Presented here is Rush recorded live at The Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ at the tail end of 1976, just nine months after the release of 2112. Performing choice selections from their first four albums, this concert provides a nice overview of the group's early years, just as they were beginning to break big. From the raging opener of "Bastille Day" to the encore pairing of "Fly By Night" and "In The Mood," this performance is a prime example of these three musicians vacillating between the heavy metal leanings of their first two albums and the more ambitious material from Caress Of Steel and 2112.
Also featured here are strong renditions of "Anthem," another Ayn Rand influenced composition from their second album and the autobiographical "Lakeside Park" from their third, conveying a slightly softer side to the group. However, the centerpiece of this performance is unquestionably the epic title track from 2112. Clocking in at a full 16 minutes, here the band is clearly shifting into more complex compositions and the more eclectic sci-fi lyrical leanings that would capture the imaginations of millions. It was performances like this that won Rush such a dedicated following, which continues to pack arenas every time Rush takes to the road.

CARESS OF STEEL was a very misunderstood album upon it's release September 24th 1975..and yes it almost ended Rush's career at the time... But to the eyes and ears of any hardcore RUSH fan it is their most underrated album!!

CARESS OF STEEL is so KILLER! I view Fountain of Lamneth as their Magnum Opus, even considering 2112 or Hemispheres ( which are a VERY close second...:) ) Killer Lerxst 12 string guitar jamming...No one at the Bridge, or Panacea... FORGETABOUTIT...I get a little choked up thinking of how many "rushheads" Don't even mention that song...Pfft; They may as well listen to ACDC...

Yes, I saw them a few times back then, you have to realize there were many more top shelf bands like this, the epic bands would just roll through town on a regular basis, they all had a whole lot of competition, the talent seemed to feed off each other, they all had to improve to survive, but Rush was def one of the elite top bands, NO DOUBT!

@mikehoskins56 As dedicated Rush fans, we already knew they were amazing. What followed was Rush touring in different countries and gaining fans all over the world. Canada has tons of great bands but not every one gets to expand beyond our borders. Texas King is a London Ontario band I really hope to see get the recognition they deserve. Their upcoming tour with Big Wreck will take them into the States. Check them out.

This is the first song that expanded me beyond my beginning bass learning, beyond Kiss & Stones. (a whole new world for me)
Now, at ~40 years later, after a recent stroke during an unrelated abdominal surgery, I’m having to start all over as far as my left hand is concerned (as those fingers are numb), and this song is my next major goal/milestone. Life is a circle, I guess.
Thanks for the recurring inspiration, guys! I really miss Neal and you all.

This seems like a sound board recording with minimal clean up (like a Betty Board for you Dead Heads) - These guys are (were) so dedicated to striving for perfection even live, though one can never reach perfection. Neil Peart's lyrics always made me think about and evaluate my values and world view. Though I have not agreed with his complete view on the spiritual and God, through his interviews and some of his lyrics, I have major respect for him in his song writing. Many of his songs were short stories, but that is only news to you if you have not heard them before. Rest In Peace, Neil.

This is around the time All the Worlds a Stage was released....still my favorite Rush record. Alex's guitar tone on that album was heavy and powerful, never that way on anything later.

Yes, I've been listening to ATWAS in the last couple of weeks. Alex was God on that album. There is no better version of ByTor And The SnowDog to be heard anywhere.

@@nakedfreak1 IIRC, the liner notes on the album say it was recorded in Massey Hall.
