    Tritons really should have darkvision, how can they even see in the ocean depths?
    Yay, they got it! I know I wasn't the only one who thought that, and it seems WoTC agreed too.

      Shores, continental shelves, kelp farms, and coral reefs are environments for them, also to deal/trade with dry land people. The depths are akin to underdarkish aquatic area and they are more "surface" aquatic, less aboleth or kraken deep.

    I like the idea of a triton society that is like the Mongols, just a semi-nomadic horse-ridding society that can sneak into the cities they are seiging by way of their water structures.

      Maybe they have a few Sorcerers (or Druids, or whatever) that cause tidal waves. Suddenly, the city is flooded, the defenders up to their necks in water, while the Tritons can ride their sea mounts in and plunder at their leisure.
      I see these sorts as the ones who would ride giant crabs, so they can stay mounted and effective even when stepping onto land. Giant seals or walruses could the same purpose, albeit slower and more cumbersome. Then again, a giant mammal flopping and crawling around is still a threat, and more than most city defenders can handle.

    • @TeganRhodes
      @TeganRhodes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This gives me ideas for using the imagery of the curl of ocean waves being horse manes. Imagine mounted Tritons riding ashore, their mounts transforming as they contact the beach.

    I’m playing a Triton Great Old One Warlock at the moment. As a child, he was gonna be sacrificed as the vessel of his cult’s eldritch horror, but another Great Old One saved his life and he’s been a wanderer ever since.
    I tried to take the ocean horrors kind of vibe with him. He can’t speak, and so communicates almost entirely through spells and telepathy. He has tentacle hair that can transform into beholder eyes at the tips, which is why he can cast eldritch blast and why he has a bunch of sight invocations. He’s gonna ultimately be reclassing into a Hexblade/Grave Cleric later down the line though since he rolled well on his stats, but my DM’s allowed me to keep the GOO spells, since it’s the same patron.

    In the saltmarsh campaign I'm playing right now, we have a Triton fighter who is on land for the first time and he hasn't learned the land dweller ways of life. So in session freaking one, the monk decides to start a bar fight (with the law enforcers as we later found out), and the Triton, who doesn't understand the ways of a bar fight, took his trident and skewered one of the crowns guard. We later found out that this guard retired after healing from his wound. It was pretty amusing.

    So, I'm looking at a Pacific Rim type game, with the Tritons being but one empire under the oceans, and even though they don't all get along, they're far too busy keeping the Kaiju of EPoW from crossing over to the Prime Material to worry about the childish and ill considered surface dwellers.

    Something else about an underwater campaign: you don’t really need the fly spells but you can have all the fun with terrain elevation that flying normally grants you. Want to have a fight in a canyon where you’re moving from one side to another, then you can cross it like you were flying but no need for the spell.

    • @Bluecho4
      @Bluecho4 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a lot of fun to be had with vertical dungeons. Though I can see why some DMs would be wary of engaging with it, since mapping out dungeons in 3D can be challenging.

    • @knightghaleon
      @knightghaleon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Bluecho4 I've had an absolute blast DMing for a group that loved it. They were fighting in the narrow spots of a canyon, and so they were climbing and jumping on enemies to pin the tougher ones down to stab them. The Barbarian dropped an elbow. Underwater its a little less like wrestling but you can definitely play with elevation a lot without needing a wizard involved.

    The Aboliths have entire underwater cities (you did mention this). Including one under the Isle of Dread (it ended up in the Elemental Water Plane - in fact it was mostly likely moved there following the Abolith reclaiming their city following the events of The Savage Tide).

    I took my triton in a diplomatic direction as well. He's a bard who works as a cultural ambassador to the surface world with the overall goal of helping his people build bridges and gain allies. He does this by being a troubadour in a traveling band up and down the coast. He has tendrils in place of hair that look vaguely like octopus tentacles, and because it he has a special affinity for the octopus as a creature. He also learned common from sailors, so he swears like it's nothing at all to him.

    Speaking with animals in a limited way is always super fun. It's been 3 years since I had a 1 shot where my sister was a player, and they came into a room with a couple giant crabs and about a dozen regular crabs. She, a forest gnome, used speak with small beasts to give the small crabs orders in the form of a complex plan of attack against the giant crabs. It involved waves of attack, the players giving backup, and sharing a reward of giant crab meat. The crabs' response? "No, my sand." Speaking with beasts doesn't mean those beasts are smart. That's still an inside joke between everyone that was at the table.

    I have about seven 5e characters across different campaigns- I have a Triton that was an Arcane Archer warrior of the sea legions far in east. He went to war at some point and fell (sunk?) in battle and woke upon the shores of the sword coast, literally the other side of the world with strange powers manifesting as divine soul sorcery. This is where I started the game, blessed or cursed or simply chosen by Umberlee. I often would set up a wall of water, send some ice spells through it to freeze part of it and then use that as cover to pop out with my harpoon gun (crossbow) and shoot up the enemy.
    That campaign fizzled out and he joined the other semi-retired characters in my beyond account.

    Just because it reminded me of a common dnd misconception, here's the thing about fire damage under water: mechanically, it's just halved. You can cast Wall of Fire on the sea floor and it totally works. I know peoples first response is "Well that doesn't make sense", but why? Because you can't light a fire under water? Why not? Because it lacks air as fuel, but when you cast fireball from your arcane focus, it also lacks the fuel that much fire would require, it is magically supplemented.
    This is one of the reasons why changing the rules "because it just makes sense" is usually a bad idea, often times people that want to do this don't understand what the rules represent in universe.

    I play a level 12 Triton Ranger in a primarily land based campaign, (currently we are in space). She was part of an elite undersea Ranger force for her kingdom initially before joining the party. I enjoy playing her as a awkward fish out of water. She has super high charisma making her a great diplomat though when not "On" she is terrible awkward and says things that could be considered offensive, but she is just trying to learn everything she can about the lands currently above the surface. Everyone else is just as strange to her as she is to them.

    Just in time! I'm about to play a Triton Paladin of the Crown for a game in which the gods have disappeared, and because of that these threats of the depths are more dangerous, so my character was sent to the land to find out if the gods of the land have lost their powers as well.

    You think Triton skin feels like fish scales and the character that shows what a Triton in Xanathar's guide looks like has hair? What use is hair underwater?

    Suddenly visions of the movie water world with some little mermaid, and pirates of the Caribbean all mixed together into an ocean fairing world where land is scarce and the vast undersea empires rule the world while the surface peoples are just trying to survive. Yuan-ti sea snakes, lizard folk based on saltwater crocodiles or something, so many options so little time.

    I am reworking sea races for my island world where there are far more sea creatures than land creatures and the sea creatures used to subjegate the Terrans. It's great to see more videos of sea creatures. Some great ideas, guys! You guys should do a whole episode about underwater adventures. It would be totally helpful! Maybe a little about creating underwater civilizations? Just a suggestion...

    First homebrew spell to make, has got to be: Chum Cloud. Or better yet, make that the way that all of your druid summon spells manifest, a spray of chum and then the creatures appear out of the muck and mire.

    Now, I want to mix the Far Traveler with the Noble variant, and stick it to a high charisma Triton, as an ambassador of the sea. Oath of the Ancients Paladin.

    I always thought of Tritons and Sea Elves as pretty much the same thing, but never read too closely into it (don't run games conducive to undersea exploration).
    Anyone have any experience or stories of how these two races are different?

    Amphibious humanoids would be these main dealers of resources which could only be taken from the surface world. Shipwrecks would be almost like alien spacecraft depending on how much surface stuff your underwater denizens had encountered.

    I am living for this. I made a Triton Paladin of the vengeance oath. She has earned the name Spinebreaker for all the baddies she was broken with with her bare hands or over her knee. My husband and DM are excited to take our party to the sea.

    My general rule for water tend to be fire is nullified, lighting is stronger but dangerous to use, thunder bigger effect more damage, cold works the same except it creates ice blocks that can be used as cover.

    Underwater fog cloud: turbidity, squid ink, or plankton ball. Underwater fireball: half damage, but there is a 3d6 Sonic damage component with doubled aoe the following round.

    My Triton character, Joran Mernimier plays a swashbuckler who acts a sellssword/interpreter. His mother was impregnated by a legendary human pirate captain named Greenbeard. My character often serves in roles as being a mercenary, a mediator, or a privateer. Varying on wherever the money is. He also is incredibly arrogant but has a huge soft side for Orcs and smaller individuals like gnomes; and often will pay for a tables food without ever admitting he picked up the tab.
    He's a proud warrior, but also a deviant in the sense he'll often partake in backroom dealings resorting in crazy interludes when campaign is run by a decent DM. He rolled a six for character quirk and is honestly always impressed and is convinced that humans are pretending not to know of his underwater race and heritage.
    At some point, I want him to go blind so he can acquire some enchanted goggles. Should prove to be a humbling chapter in this character's life.

    Great show, I have always loved aquatic campaigns. Unrelated question/topic: What are your thoughts on using Proficiency bonus as a mobile bonus - allowing characters to use their proficiency bonus as (normal) hit bonus OR damage bonus OR AC bonus on a given round. Using this mobility to represent the idea of fighting aggressively versus defensively, etc. If used, should it be a feat or generally available?

    Edit: awesome vid! I find the mechanics interesting, but the more and rp potential to be engrossing. Thank you for going to far in those directions.
    Been reading the Ghosts of Saltmarsh recently, in preparation for running through it as a campaign. I'm hoping a couple players make Tritons. Both for lore and mechanics, it would be a great pick. 😁
