  • The Happy Camper and his canoe buddy, Andy Baxter, head out for a canoe trip of a life time - the full length (200 km & 8 days) of the Mississippi River in Southeastern Ontario, Canada. Part one has them starting at Bon Echo Provincial Park on Mazinaw Lake and ending on Kashwakamak in the North Frontenac Parklands. Water levels are lower than expected, and mosquitoes are out in full force.

Mazinaw Rock is one of my favourite sights in Ontario. The pictographs are so interesting and the rock is awe inspiring.

This is awesome! I am just planning a trip from Kashwakamak down the Mississippi to Crotch and then back through Big Gull. My family has a cottage on the Mississippi (maybe I'll see it in part 2) but I have never canoed it. Me and my Dad always go to Algonquin but we are finally going to do this trip. We were just at the cottage two weeks ago just before the fire ban, must have just missed you. Its such an under rated, beautiful area, cant wait to see the rest of the trip!

Really enjoyed this. Love hearing about the history and glad you brought up the "crossing dispute" and private property. We ran across that on the Moon River. We met the owner near the end of a 1.7km portage all of it his property. He actually partially maintained the portage but also had a fence along the one side (closest to his house) he was super cool and a canoeist as well and told us similar stories about having to cross private property whose owners weren't so friendly. Looking forward to the rest of this series.

Ontario's Mississippi River is a fabulous canoe route. I canoed a substantial portion of it from Lake Mazinaw. Water levels were substantially higher when we did this trip.
I think it's time Ontario implemented a Right to Roam Act like in British Columbia and in most European countries. We need more than the Beds of Navigable Waters Act. I stress that to be fair to land owners and to make this possible, we MUST respect land owners and leave no traces other than footprints. Land owners also need to respect that as our province's population keeps growing in leaps and bounds that people do need access to wilderness and nature for our physical and mental health. In many cases property taxes are not high enough and this is one way land owners can give back to the people of Ontario without higher taxes.

Mentioning the whip-poor-wills reminds me of a time on the Jack's Fork River in Missouri when there was a WPW that called all through the night. I had a dream that the ring tone on my phone was changed to a WPW call and it was ringing. It kept ringing after I answered the phone, it kept ringing even when I took the battery out of the phone. Then I woke up and realized the WPW had invaded my dream. Hope you got a good night's sleep.

Regarding the private property in Canada there is a reserved set back from any lake or river and one doesn't own the 66 feet (1 chain) back from the high water mark. No one in Canada owns property right down to the water's edge. So if anyone tells you to leave and you are within that distance from water they are wrong.

My father a stationery engineer always worried about the Coleman stove's white gas exploding. Propane is much safer. He used a propane stove when we went car camping, but he always knew it could be dangerous. We rented a cottage at Morrow's for years, decades, I can hardly wait till the happy campers get that far, if they do. I'm too old for cottaging let alone canoeing through mosquitoes, black flies and deer flies.
