Love the straightforward and non pretentious approach you guys take on your gear review videos. I also enjoy the humorous banter between Alan and Jason.
It's typical fishing rig, catches fisherman/preppers. A good old spool of line ,bobber, & speedhook. Work great. Still a great video guys .Thanks for doin the video 👍
Personally I got bored the other day and decided to take an old gift card and made my own personal hand reel, works well for small fish, it'll most likely break with anything bigger than 2lbs. at that point though I'm most likely just tie some line onto a wooden pole and just do some cane pole fishing.
As far as the reel… I’ll stick to my “Yoyito” handline. The XL is way over priced. I think a 6” Bayite Rod wrapped with cargo tape would suffice for around $15 max. I had problems with the lighter sleeve but Jason debunked my troubles with the lid coming off. Nice review of these products. I sure hope y’all get around to the Toaks stove I sent in. Be nice to hear more granny Great Depression videos too. 👍👍😁🇺🇸
I coveted that Ferro Rod XL for a while, but couldn’t justify the cost. So I got me a 1/2x5 rod from another company, and a Bison Tube of appropriate size, a drill and some epoxy, and made my own. And, I added half of a U-Steel (for flint and steel) to my Purefire folding model to make it more multifunctional. 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
@RAF_Ai I haven't used it much yet. So I can't speak to much on the durability of the rubber part. I mostly got it to have in my get-home bag, as it's way more compact than a telescopic rod and reel.
The 5 Dollar Ferro and some waxed jute, or a waxed jute "English Wick," is the best combustion pairing I've seen. Good to see Allen's doing well after all these years. He made me an Alone Nut.
That looked more like a Double-French Bowline than a bohemian timber hitch... but I couldn’t tell for sure.... 😉 Maybe someone else who trained at Pickle Meadows in the 1980’s could confirm that? Semper Fi
An easy way to always have tinder.. take jute twine and braid it, use it for the lanyard on the cheap ferro rod. Keep up the great videos! I Enjoy watching them
Love exotac machining but more often than not, the price isn't worth that of other gear (like the best hooks & braid) If you've got money to burn, there's certainly worse things to spend it on. Highly recommend the MatchcapXL but I'd buy the titanLIGHT over that ferro rod (but my tru utility peanut lighter is still working after 7'ish years, cost like £5)
I caught the XL on sale plus a 10% discount code with a few other items so I actually got my hands on it for around $30 so it didn't hurt as bad. I also replaced the lanyard with fire cord for a backup to my backup for tinder and attached a wazoo ceramic striker. The best thing about the silicone lighter sleeve is the top keeps the button from accidentally being pushed while in your pocket or your kit. The reel was cool , but I made my hobo reel out of a 10" piece of 3/4" pvc cut in half with a coupler in the middle screw on caps at each end for storage and on one end I put spider wire for actively fishing and on the other end I put #12 bank line for trotlines with ranger bands on each end to hold the line in place. . .
Best ferro rod scraper is a carbide paint scraper blade. I don't use my knife as ferro rods contain toxic metals and a friend was testing his children's toys for lead and the ferro rod tested positive. I don't want cross contamination when cutting cooking sticks etc.
Love the vids bud. A trick with the bick lighter is always pull out that child sfty piece of metal over the roller. It could be underwater, fresh or salt for days or even weeks. Take it out of the water & run it real fast on your thy part of your jeans, back & fourth The heat will dry out all of the components & you will be able to use your lighter again & start a fire with a wet bick.
Great look at some quality products. I have the firesleeve - Awesome / wish they would make it for a mini bic as well. The Xreel looks nice but I like Jason's little fishing kit he showed in another video. As for the XL - looks awesome but the price just kills it for me. Thanks Alan, Jason and the ninja apprentice. Nate
I got two very big ferro rods for $16 and they work flawlessly, will not buy ever this so expensive and not necessary at all ferro rod (not to mention that after paying $60 you still need a striker). The fishing tool awesome, looking forward to get one. Bests regards from a Venezuelan follower!
Made a ripspool out of a 410 shot shell and a sewing bobbin, shhh don’t tell the folks at EXOTAC their stuff is so much more elegant, and pricey! Knock the primer out and secure the bobbin in the primer hole with a spent magnum rim fire casing, wrap with the tape of your choice and voila!
Yea exotac does have great quality gear. The lighter goes other way in fire sleeve. The slit end goes by fuel button to hold fuel on...Yea definitely spot on with the elderis also.Enjoy 😉
That lighter case is awesome. I need to get one of those because lighters rule. I have a dozen lighters all over my truck in in my rucks. However, as you guys know, a ferro rod is critical because you can't work a lighter in the cold and wet. It doesn't even have to be freezing for hands to be too cold to work a lighter. Ask me how I know! But when your hands turn to flippers, you can start a fire with a ferro rod and a knife, piece of metal, belt buckle, tool, bumper, etc.
Also doesn't hurt to have some matches on you too, I always got 2 book of them on me, since they weigh almost nothing. So even if you can't immediately get the fire going, you could use a whole book in 1 massive match. Or have a waterproof match container and keep some UCO storm matches on hand. Matches may not have the same shelf life as a ferro rod but in a pinch it may just be the better option between a striker Farro rod and matches, just because the match can get a fire going a faster, not excluding skills with a ferro rod.
Fishing spool and lighter cover is a winner...Xtra Strength farro rod is a cool design like all factors..But if it was like $39.99 I would pull the trigger. I got 2 their pocket size on my key chain...But $59.99...I don't think so...Sometimes less is more...Heads up Exotac..
I think I like my 1/2" x6" bayite just as good. Get 2 for like $12 on Amazon. I carry a carbide striker in my pocket always. Even the coglans small Ferro rod works great. Once you learn how to use them all work great. Make your money go further
I made a larger and wider spool for my xReel out of a 50mm PVC pipe joiner and the line retrieval is so much easier no need to look at the reel and it gives me two line options
Im not sure if it has been brought to your attention, but see you lighter in the exotac sleeve is put in backwards. If you rotate it 180° there's the slit in the sleeve to slide onto the button of the lighter and keep it ignited for longer usage without burning your thumb. I am no masochist I burned myself enough as I weld so why burn yourself even more with a lighter? Anyways, I hope that tip is useful. Thanks for the great content.
I've got to say, I haven't had a problem with a BIC lighter discharging in my pocket since they changed to ring around the striker wheel. I'm a smoker and have one in my pocket with my keys everyday. They last me at least 2 months. I don't buy the cheap lighters.
I use several different exotac products and all are great, I really like the supporting American business aspect and high level of quality. I also use a pure fire tactical rod/mag combo and it is also very good quality, and has a lifetime warranty how can you beat that lol.
I bought the Exotac XL ferro rod from the exotac booth at Bladeshow 2021 in Atlanta, and it was not sixty dollars, if it hadn't been marked down I wouldn't have been marked down and it was selling for sixty dollars I would have passed. That being said for the money I paid for it it's been a dandy of a ferro rod!
That guy reminds me of kris kristopherson or de ray white but you all together are super informative love you guys new subscriber so looking at past vids thanks for your knowledge...
One thing you missed with the lighter sleeve is that there's a part meant to be pulled up over the button in case your hands are a bit cold or you're wearing gloves.
It's a neat hand reel but for the size and cost i'd spend an hour carving and hollowing a stick (about 6-8 inches long, 1 1/2 thick and drill about 3/4 inch hole through it, wine cork to plug the cavity) Even better it floats, and if the game warden comes and hand reel fishing is illegal like here in texas you're only out tackle when you toss it instead of a fancy CNC reel
Have yall tried the yo yito hand reel look a tad larger, not much. Comes with a nice pouch that holds your fishing kit. And it fits into a pants or cargo pocket.
So the Xreel ... great idea but bet you could 3D print something similar or even better and fail on the hook 🪝 (I have made bottle tab and paperclip hooks that were tougher)
What's y'alls opinion on the coldsteel kukuris? Have a preferred model/size/metal, (and what machetes do you recommend? )? Looks like the ferrel rode is built more(hopefully) like a falcon from space-X! And not NASA crap.
I’ve been a big Exotac fan and own many of their products, however, the pricing on a couple of their latest releases left me wondering if they’ve lost touch with their market base. The Firerod XL is cool and I wanted one until I saw the $60 dollar price tag! That is way out there in left field and now a $100 hand reel??? Bushcraft has become a fad and the market is hot right now but when this trend falls out of favor the woodsman and traditionalists will be left and for the most part we’re a pretty pragmatic group. I’m just an old grey haired man but I’ve spent a fair share of my 61 years in the outdoors and I’m far too frugal for their new product lines. YMMV.
This is a spot on comment! Love these guys videos, so not throwing any hate towards them of course.. But, Exotac is profiting A TON with these prices. In fact, there's a ferro rod exactly the same on Amazon as their Ferrostriker, for $5. I have both & can't tell a single difference. Its a shame they are so expensive, but it is what it is i suppose.
I would like to have a scabard for my mora neck knife like you have. Do you make those or where did you get it? Mine came with a reversible slip on sheath.
Only for the rich. I do own a sleeve and a nanostriker XL. I only have the nano because the rod is covered and protected. I see no reason to fork over $60 for an exposed firesteel. The issue with the sleeve is the air trapped inside, you got to burp it.
Man, good on exotac. 100 bucks for a spool you can put on your finger. I'm sure there's a bunch of guys lining up with there latest apple phones begging for them to take there money

Agreed to main comment. Definitely in my top 5 gear videos
I always wear fishnets out into the wilderness, this way you need no reel.
Caution during bigfoot mating season (about now)
Lol
Tactical and practical!
I'm sure it makes you popular with the locals as well !
*SIxty dollars* for a ferro rod?? I have a suggestion where Exotac can store that thing.
😂 try living in Canada - the XL ferro rod is around $100 😂
Can’t put a price on something that could save your life.
Cheap ferro sounds good but.
@@A.D.D.O.C.D.T But what? Inexpensive ferro rods make sparks. End of story.
Just checked. $65.95 on their website. Just shy of $60 elsewhere. Pretty steep for a $5-$15 ferro rod with a storage compartment.
