Everything you listed as a "Negative" is what I NEED a lens for when out shooting HDR! having an AF lens that is constantly hunting Focus is a Bitch in the field when Sharp is what you need! not a lens that does all of the thinking for you! a Long Focus Pull is for NAILING Focus! no one using this lens is shooting Sports
Absolutely, I really want a lens that I can fine tune the focus to get exactly what I want, and this has much better control than a super short throw focus ring.

That is a cine lens so the apurture ring being manual and the focusing ring being realy long are actualy advantages
The Rokinon 14mm comes with or without the AE chip to focus. So, potential buyers who want the auto focus you do have the option however, it costs roughly a $100 more than the one without the AE chip.
I have the 10mm cropped frame version which is pretty much equivalent to this one on a full frame and I was blown away by its sharpness. It's extremely wide so I thought of getting this 14mm one I didn't know it's a full frame but now you relaxed my craving so thanks :) I highly recommend it. Learning to manual focus has big advantages!
The long travel on the focus is because it's a cine lens. Samyang's equivalent also has unstepped (no click) aperture ring for smooth cine aperture adjustment. It's no big deal. Just intended for another use. You'll get used to it.
I recently bought this lens specifically for Night Sky photography and loo it for that purpose! Have not used it for anything else yet, but may try some Landscapes. Can't beat it for the price.
I have a Canon 6D2. With no electronic connections will it confuse the camera body and think no lens has been installed? I have no problem doing focus and aperture manual adjustments on the lens. As long as the Canon body is happy with it.
I bought this lens specifically for shooting Milkyway pictures. Very happy with it for this purpose. The fact it doesn't auto focus is not a big deal for my use-case.
A prime lens doesn't mean that it's a fully manual lens. Most prime lenses I've owned actually have the aperture control through the camera like any other lens
im after a lens for indoor use, very good lighting and video pans on a tripod. is a very old ZEISS Distagon T* 21mm f/2.8 ZE Lens for Canon Ef at $650 used a much better choice on my 2 cameras, a canon 80d aps-c and a full frame sony a7r3 withe a metabones iv adapter. please suggest a lense, max buget $800 previously owned. mostly well lit interiors, maybe 20 percent outdoor shots
You should probably know never to put a polarizing filter on an ultra-wide lens, or even on some mildly wide lens like a 21mm. You will see the beginning and the end of the filter's effect in the sky on both sides of the frame. So, that should be a non issue for this lens! As for ND filters, bracket 5 exposures and do an expert HDR merge in Photomatix Pro or something like that.
I think the lens was intended as a cheap psudo cinema lens alternative. The "negative" features you mentioned are actual features needed for cine lenses. (BTW, even non cine lenses in the past used aperture rings as all cameras then where fully manual). The lack of ability to screw on filters is not also a problem for cine lenses as Matte boxes are used to hold filters. The thing that makes it not a true cinema lens are the non de clicked aperture ring and the built in lens hood. I also dont know if it is part of series of lenses that have same diameter size. Rokinon does offer real Cinema lenses that have all the features needed for cine lenses. This seems to be geared for those who take both photo and videos, using DSLR cameras.
I have actually shot with this for real estate stuff! It works fairly well, and there's really not any other lens that can compete with this one at the same price point. With that being said, there is a slight distortion, not bad but there is distortion. And a tilt shift type lens would be an ideal situation for any sort of architectural type photography.
Kaz Canning, thanks. I have a Canon 5d MkII and several lenses and I am considering a Sony A6000 for those times when I want to travel light. A good mount converter could be very interesting to me.
The a6000 is definitely a good choice for a small light camera! Just keep in mind, the adapter won't make the lenses work perfectly, especially compared to a body like the 5dmk2. But don't let that keep you from getting the adapter! Just make sure you check out a few examples of the adapter actually working, or even if you know someone with a sony camera and canon lenses adapted, check it out and see how well it works. Also, the sony kit lens has been working better than I expected. I made a review on it, comparing the kit lens to a canon 24-70L on a sony a6300 (also a crop sensor like the a6000) check it out, I think you'd be suprised with how well it works overall.
Yepp, it should work great! Two things to keep in mind though, because the T6i is a crop camera, the lens will end up looking like a 24mm lens. Second, the lens that I showed here is a manual focus lens, so just make sure that won't surprise you!
I got that lens but newer version. yes the autofocus is manual but the aperture I can change it trough my camera aperture controls. (nikon d750) best buy I had ever made i highly recomended this lens. if you buy it used buy it trought a well know camera seller. I bought my at adorama.
Decent budget astro-photography lens and works well for landscape shots in broad daylight with plenty of sun. Not usable for much else from my experience. Horrendous in low light and oddly bad indoors even in decent lighting despite being a 2.8. Video is terribly shaky even with slow pan, have to use a tripod if you want any kind of stable video with this lens. Build quality is solid and it feels like a more expensive lens. Love it for shooting night sky and some wide angle weather and cloud shots, but don't find much use for it elsewhere. It is a "bargain" lens and I'd suggest trying to get it used vs. paying the $300-400 new.
im after a lens for indoor use, very good lighting and video pans on a tripod. is a very old ZEISS Distagon T* 21mm f/2.8 ZE Lens for Canon Ef at $650 used a much better choice on my 2 cameras, a canon 80d aps-c and a full frame sony a7r3 withe a metabones iv adapter. please suggest a lense, max buget $800 previously owned
This lens is made generally for Astrophotography..The minor details of, no auto focus, manual aperture ring, are nothing..barrel distortion and chromatic aberration are also nothing and easy fix in software..i wouldn't use this lens for daytime photography but for the stars it's brilliant for the price.
Dude the Samyang 21mm f1.4 is the boy... Especially for Astro.. A no brainer. Never buying a native lens again...And who gives a fuck about auto when shooting astro ?? Money saved means I can buy another 2 lenses.. Sony and Zeiss are taking the piss..As usual all about the label... Done with their extortion... Total arse sauce...Because its made in Japan ?? Lol... I am guessing Samyang/ Rokinon will take the lions share of the market..And this is in the field usage... Too many gimps plugging expensive glass...
as he goes over all the NEGATIVES, as a video guy I am thinking.. well those are good things.. big gears, and everything on the lens,. NICE no camera house fuck-ups :D but that might just be me
The distortion is odd. I wouldn't classify it as "bad" but I wouldn't say it's "good". It has something called Mustache distortion, so straight lines in the scene aren't pin cushioned or barrel distorted, it's a slight mixture of both. But for outdoors stuff, it's not perceivable at all.
These lenses are not made for photographers, they have F stop versions that are. You’re reviewing a cinema lens that is made for video. So all your negatives are completely null.
Absolutely not true. This is a low budget photography lens. If this was a video focused lens, it would me measured in T stops, not f stops, the aperture selection would be declicked, and it would have grooved focus and aperture rings for follow focus. Not to mention Rokinon literally released a cinema version of this exact lens a while after this one was released, it features all of the previous points I mentioned. So no, this is not a cinema lens
This review is quite odd !
Absolutely, I really want a lens that I can fine tune the focus to get exactly what I want, and this has much better control than a super short throw focus ring.
That is a cine lens so the apurture ring being manual and the focusing ring being realy long are actualy advantages
It's actually not a cine lens at all.
Sold my my Canon 10-18 ef-s which I used on a 7d mark II. Now I use this lens on Canon 6d and I'm happy with the sharpness of this lens.
The Rokinon 14mm comes with or without the AE chip to focus. So, potential buyers who want the auto focus you do have the option however, it costs roughly a $100 more than the one without the AE chip.
Good review, I just bought the AE version in EF mount. Great lens. Also love the @ryan little beats.
Focusing a lens with a long throw is easier to focus accurately than one with a short throw.
The long travel on the focus is because it's a cine lens. Samyang's equivalent also has unstepped (no click) aperture ring for smooth cine aperture adjustment. It's no big deal. Just intended for another use. You'll get used to it.
i have Rokinon 35mm f1.2 manual focus and my god the sharpness and the quality of the image just amazing
They've been putting out absolutely incredible quality lenses for a good price for a long time now!
I recently bought this lens specifically for Night Sky photography and loo it for that purpose! Have not used it for anything else yet, but may try some Landscapes. Can't beat it for the price.
It's a fantastic lens for astro, I've used it several times when I've had the chance and haven't been disapointed yet!
Have you used it on a full frame or on the sony alpha series?
For the price this is an awesome lens. My go to for landscape photography.
I have the Pentax version. It has auto-aperture and focus confirmation. The only thing it lacks is auto-focus.
Note: The newest release of this lens has auto-focus.
And costs 700$
CoolEditz is it compatible in fujifilm xt100?
I like the manual for $260 usd can’t beat it
Looks like a great lens for landscape, the edges look fine, definitely not a deal breaker
I just got it and it’s fire 🔥!! Thanks!
Awesome! Glad you like it! It's hard to go wrong with that lens!
The lens has a slot for Cut Filters on the backside for the Nikon Z model.
It’s a prime lens. Changing the from 2.8-22 stop is normal to do in that way.
A prime lens doesn't mean that it's a fully manual lens. Most prime lenses I've owned actually have the aperture control through the camera like any other lens

Thanks for this guide, super helpful! Actually been wanting to buy this leas for awhile :)
I'm glad this helped you on your decision! I really do like this lens, and think it's one of the best value lenses you can buy right now!
Is this compatible for Nikon d7000
Hi does this lens goes well and still maintain the 14mm on the canon Sl2 ? Wanting to buy this one but need this information before
will be cropped to 1.6x. so 14mm x 1.6 still worth to get. or u can opt for 10-18mm canon .
Thanks for this review 👍
Hi, great video! what camera did you use to shoot with?
Thank you! This video was shot on the sony a6300.
I think the lens was intended as a cheap psudo cinema lens alternative. The "negative" features you mentioned are actual features needed for cine lenses. Had the same question, just ordered this to pair with a Pentax k-70 for real estate photo
Kaz Canning what what’s a good tilt shift wide angle lenses that would work well for real estate photography?
hello, fits a6000??
Yes, Rokinon has a version that will fit the e mount
Compatible in fujifilm xt100?
Yes! It is available in fuji x mount!

2 minutes to say manual focus/fStop 🙄 We know it’s a fully manual lens. Otherwise a good review
I just got this lens for $150. Trying to use it to get Milky Ways shots..... as soon as the sky clears!
Im sure you'll get some great shots! Have fun!
Hii. I have Panasonic s5 leica L mount. Can i use this lens with my cam ?
You're in Mt. Laguna in this video?
Yepp! I was at big Laguna Lake up in Mt. Laguna. It's my favorite place in San Diego!
Which adapter are you using with your Sony camera?
I'm using the metabones IV canon ef to e mount. I've had it for over 4 years now, and works fairly well
Kaz Canning, thanks. I have a Canon 5d MkII and several lenses and I am considering a Sony A6000 for those times when I want to travel light. A good mount converter could be very interesting to me.

Will this fit on a canon rebel t3i
MoveOutMedia yes but the crop factor will reduce it from 14mm to 22.4mm focal length.
Great video by the way. Thanks that’s good to know.
Got it for 130$ on Amazon … it was a open box used
Does this work well with a Canon T6i?
Yepp, it should work great! Two things to keep in mind though, because the T6i is a crop camera, the lens will end up looking like a 24mm lens. Second, the lens that I showed here is a manual focus lens, so just make sure that won't surprise you!
I got that lens but newer version. yes the autofocus is manual but the aperture I can change it trough my camera aperture controls. (nikon d750) best buy I had ever made i highly recomended this lens.
if you buy it used buy it trought a well know camera seller. I bought my at adorama.
Sometimes I forget how mollycoddled or unskilled people are when someone has to explain how to use an aperture ring.

how to purchase in INDIA rockinon lenses...

you should do reviews on android/apple phone camera optics
That's a great idea! I'll have to see if I know anyone with an iPhone x and an S8. Thanks for the suggestion!
what about the distortion. i heard its bad
An aperture ring is a problem, really?
I'm not really saying that it's a problem, but people should be aware that it's fully manual, even the aperture ring
Good choice
I;m selling one of these of anyone is in the Toronto area (e mount)

@@KazCanning I thought the video said it was measured in T stops, my mistake.
nice
so much blah blah ... more interested in seeing what it looks like ... bye
If you want to see a picture of it just go on b&h.
👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎
Lol, not a fan of the lens?
Stop using the lens as a pointer! You are waving it around like you are conducting an orchestra!
Compatible with the sony alpha 6000 series?
yes at 1.5x crop and the e-mount version
Rokinon makes a specific lens for your camera though, its 12mm f2.
