  • Paul, K6PMZ, has a question concerning power distribution over multiple antennas. He has a switchable splitter and he is wondering if power is being lost to the antenna/s he is not using.

    I use a fan dipole for my main antenna for 40, 30, 20, 15 and 10 meters. It works very well. then for 80/75 meters I use a trapped vertical.
    I like your video. Good job.

    You can also use different mobile antennas on a single feed point on either a triangle shape mount or disc mount with multiple connecting points and each antenna will resonate on the band it's designed for no matter how many antennas are mounted .

    Mr Casler, thank you so much for explaining this. I just bought an octopus with 2 sets of popular hf band sticks. I'm glad to know how it works now.

    The way i like to think about multi element antennas is similar to parallel resistors. At different frequencies reach element is a different impedance, so most of the current will go into the element that matches the source impedance best but a little will go into the others, but not enough to worry about, even so that little energy should be radiated just fine and any reflection will be similarly small.

    @BusDriverRFI 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's amazing that the signal won't radiate on the wrong antenna elements on a fan dipole because it's not resonant but if we want to use a non resonant antenna, it will magically work fine.

    • @davecasler
      @davecasler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and no. The non-resonant antenna needs a tuner that supplies enough reactance that the combination of the antenna, feedline, and the tuner is resonant.

    Call me a "Doubting Thomas"... I'd like to see meters hooked up to the ends of the 80m and 40m and 15m segments and see what power is registered. I would not expect only the resonant segment to register power. I would expect all segments to register at least *some* power. But prove me wrong by making a video out of this! 73 de W3DJS in Dacula, GA

    Three Half's is one and a Half. 3/2 = 1 1/2 = 1.5

      The key point is that it's an odd number of halves.

    would you accept giveaways to Germany (if the postal fee is payed from rhe reciever?(previos)....and otherwise to accept the money as a giveaway to your channel?).
    73, dg2r?

      I'll have to think about that. One option is that everybody can enter, but if they win, must pay the postage from the US to the country of interest. I'll ponder that and announce the result on one of the livestreams.

    Thank you for the information. When tuning a fan dipole what band should I tune first, the lowest or the highest?

    • @davecasler
      @davecasler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually tune the lowest band first. But best to follow the instructions for commercial antennas.

    From what I have learned about antennas is that each can be used on another frequency as long as the other frequency is a third harmonic of primary resonate band .

    • @iainmeteorscan1555
      @iainmeteorscan1555 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Joe Wilson Hi Joe - that’s correct, and the same goes for every odd harmonic, e.g. 5, 7, 9, 11 and so on.

    • @davecasler
      @davecasler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That trick is most commonly used when 40 meter antennas are used for 15 meters.

      I would also like to ask you for advice because I am already quite desperate about my situation with the hf antenna. I am on the second floor of the block and the balcony (4.5 × 1.5 × 2.5hights) is all I have left for the whole band of 40-10m i'm SSB guy not ft-8(But not mag loop) And this as much as possible under cover despite a full license (A). Thanks and 73

    • @davecasler
      @davecasler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The mag loops are particularly popular in Europe because of their small size. If you get one that can be remotely tuned, you can try to get the building manager's permission to put it on the roof or at least mount it to your balcony railing.

      @@davecasler Thanks for the reply. However, in the EU, we only have a well-known trade in Germany. Which has inaccessible ce.e for me for loop (1000 € +) But I don't want qrp loopa ead would be at least 70W on ic7300
