So thrilled to have this. I'm really knocked out that they did it. Even among Ornette Coleman fans, I don't think this series of albums is as popular as the Atlantic releases, or the work he did in the '70s. Two things to reply to your comments. 1) Great point about the joy in the music, and how it is the smiling, high-spirited side of avant-garde jazz. 2) Not everyone feels the need to justify this music as listenable. It is terribly under-represented in audiophile archival reissues for vinyl, even though for labels like Blue Note it was very much a powerful aspect of the label's mission. So when a Don Cherry release comes along, or a Sam Rivers, it's a real cause for celebration ... Not trigger warnings. (Speaking in general, I know you praise these recordings as they should be). It's the other stuff I avoid, as the hard bop business can become very repetitive. Luckily, there is a thriving scene today and many of the artists are releasing recordings on vinyl (although I doubt many are AAA, I've attended many recording sessions around NYC over the years and the live acoustic vibe abides).

Nice to see Ornette Coleman getting some love! I have a 1978 (?) Japanese reissue made by King Records of volume 1 of 'At The Golden Circle' that I dig. I just spun it again because you mentioned the clarity of even the hand claps, and I agree, they sound clear and sharp. I think it's just a really great recording of a great session.
    Cheers, Tom

Your are right, Michael. Its an iconic Boxset. A tough but satisfying listening. The sound us incredible good, turn up the volume and your living room becomes the golden circle. But be carefull roomates or familymembers who are not so much into jazz will quickly move out then. Could aswell be a chance…. Who knows. Anyhow the boxset provides hours of listening fun. I ordered because of your recommendstion in an earlier video. Thank you very much for the tipp.

Great video Michael. So far, I’m pretty happy with my box set.
I usually take my time immersing myself in box sets. This week I've been listening to the two volumes of Golden Circle a lot. Like many people, I consider both masterpieces. And I agree with you, the quality of the reissues is extraordinary. Overall, I think the quality of these record sleeves is excellent. At the same time, I am reading the interesting biography made by Maria Golia. Really enjoying Coleman.

Michael, I feared that I would not be able to "get into" the "Foxhole" LP, but I found it absolutely listenable and interesting. Having heard Don Cherry's "Where is Brooklyn" a couple of weeks ago, I was skeptical, because THAT is something that does not appeal to me at all, but damn.....every disk in this beautiful box is, as you say...."breath taking". Best to you my friend.

Another great Ornette record is his soundtrack to Naked Lunch. He also plays on Jamaaladeen Tacuma's Renaissance Man, which I recently purchased sealed from EIL in England. All of these need to be remastered and reissued on wax. The entire Gramavision catalogue, in fact, needs to be reissued. It's criminal that those remain out of print.

Blue Note needs to get their packaging on the same level as Analogue Productions. I had a box a couple months ago where 4 out of the 5 jackets were damaged. They refunded and let me keep the records. I don't understand that policy other than it's how a large corporation operates.

This is exactly right. Both the Verve Jazz Store and the Blue Note need to improve their packaging services. They use these thin boxes and as a result, the corners get creased and banged up in transit. Yes, they are pretty good on replacement policy, but like you say it doesn't make sense. Although lately they are trying to get away with just giving a discount. Blue Note and the Jazz store, if you read this, It's not rocket science guys, you just need sturdier boxes and mailers. Get with it already. I am tired of having to deal with it, it seems like every other order, corners get damaged. At up to $40 a record, there is no excuse.

I love OC so had to buy this set. Yes, it's a beautiful object. But doing some comparing, it isn't sonically superior to the RVG 24-bit remaster CDs I bought years ago for about 12 euros each. By the way, it can't be. Vinyl just can't reach 24-bit resolution, it's physics, no matter how well it's mastered. Plus, on CD you get the bonus tracks, which are not on these LPs.
So yes, let's celebrate this set as a beautiful object; and at the same time, let's not fool ourselves into thinking it sounds "better" than previous reissue series...

Michael, I agree with your assessments and I will say to a new jazz listener, Ornette Coleman is a hard listen. I like Love Call first, Love and Gospel second, The Stockholm 1 and 2, then New York is Now and then the Fox Hole, which is a hard listen., especially with his little son playing the drums, sad but true. The box set is well done however. Bluenote must go deeper into their archives and give us a John Coltrane Blue Train, among other things.

Just one comment. You have said on a number of your videos that good mastering and pressing helps you to get through these albums. Paying this type of money, in my opinion we should be buying albums that we like and not having to force ourselves though them. I think jazz aficionados should buy what they like, not just buy them all for the sake of it.

  • @Jazzeum

I suspect that many people will purchase this box because it’s Blue Note, not because they like free jazz (of which I’m not a fan). Although I’m sure the box is well done and sounds very good, before you buy something you have to like that type of music and if you don’t no degree of presentation or re-mastering will improve it. To say “it’s not that bad,” means you have to convince yourself that you can listen to the music. If you start with that point of view you’ve lost the battle already and just wasting your money.

Everyone has a right to their own opinion, but there is no need to gush praise over what isn't even his best work. As others have mentioned, this isn't what an Ornette Coleman fan wants as these are weaker than his other albums.
So I thought to myself, why is Michael raving over this collection? And then it came to me. You have truly transitioned from super fan into a salesman with the monetization of your channel. Your opinions are no longer objective and should be subjected to deep scrutiny.
Hope you can find your way back to where you began. 😔
