    We lost the great pianist/composer/bandleader Anthony Armando "Chick" Corea this week at the age of 78. One of my biggest musical influences, I thought I would break down his incredible 1985 Berklee handout and how it can apply to you. I also share some of my personal feelings about his legacy in my life and the impact his music has had on my life as a #Jazz musician. RIP, Chick.
    The music heard in this video is "Quartet no. 2" Part I (Dedicated to Duke Ellington) from the album THREE QUARTETS (1981).

    He was the truth... And mine too, the maestro... He become my friend for the last few years of his life. I gave him a beautiful coat he wore everywhere, he even wore it at his last grammy award performance. We would chat via email and our friendship was special... He was just a lovely man and a hero, my heart will hurts forever... But we are so grateful we had Armando Antonio Chick Corea in life and his sound will live forever.

    Great video Paul. All I’ve been doing for the last two days is listen to Chick. What a gut punch.

    RIP Chick. It's hard to fathom how much i have been inspired by Chick since my late teens. I was just starting to get into fusion & jazz, and my college music theory teacher presented a Return to Forever track to demonstrate a compositional concept. I immediately sought out the recording, and have been delving into Chick's music for the last 18 years. I've also been fortunate to see Chick on a couple of occasions, and his performances were mind blowing. He was playing at peak level right up until his death.

    Amen to that. Watching lots of more recent videos of Chick, he always appeared to have a very youthful joy and enthusiasm about him. Inspiring in so many ways.

    Being so new to jazz, started listening in june, and falling in love with the romantic warrior album, this death hit me very hard. I love chicks music, his magnificent style of playing really took me to some incredible musical moments. I owe my life to Return to Forever and Weather Report. Good bye, Armando. Thank you for all of your music.

    Great lessons....all of those points we tend to lose sight of. It's always good to review and reset. Thanks for posting.

    Thanks as always Paul for sharing this amazing advice from Chick and how you’re working on some of these yourself. We all honor the maestro with every intentional thing we play. Thank you Chick.

    Great tribute to a true legendary musician. I’ve read Chick’s ‘Cheap Advise’ before, and again recently, but you really brought it to life! Thanks to you, and RIP Chick Corea.

    It's sad to hear of Chick's passing. I can't count how many times I've listened to Spain or or played Armando's Rhumba. Light as a Feather was one of those life changing albums for me. Great lessons by the way! That list should be reviewed by all before every gig! ;

    Found this because of your WZUM interview. Nice tribute, Paul. And that "cheap advice" cuts across so many disciplines. It was new to me, so thanks for sharing it. This channel is terrific, btw - love what you're doing here! (Larry Meyers)

    Paul; as always you come up with a great video and great comment. I will be researching more Chick stuff, subsequent to this video, already play some of his music, didn’t know how prolific a composer he was, thanks for the heads up, regards ; Josh.

    Great stuff, Paul. I remember reading that advice around 35 years ago. It is some of the most profound, and succinct wisdom I have ever heard, before or since. I have tried to integrate it into my own playing (often unsuccessfully) and always in my teaching, (jury’s out on that one!) Just last week I had the 800th conversation with a student on releasing tension you create. I can’t count the hours I’ve spent just trying to develop and share that ONE SKILL!
    Chick was one of the true giants. Thanks for sharing your story. You and I are both buys that wandered into this garden from the world of Rock music. For me, it was Spain that opened some of those doors, but I’ll never forget the first time I heard Got a Match either! Peace, Scott

    Nice one Paul . Chick has been at the top level for years , since the 60s . One of the best pianists in jazz , god bless him . People like him and McCoy and Horace Silver , they are just such strong individuals in their art and as composers too . I’m trying to think of younger players who are as strong personalities.

      They’re out there for sure! Vijay Singh, Jason Moran, Brad Mehldau-some of my favorites, but Chick is still the 🐐!

      I’m getting to be a grumpy old geezer for sure . Take Herbie Hancock for example , Dolphin Dance , Cantaloupe , Maiden Yoyage , Chameleon , pure classic tunes from classic albums that everyone plays. Same with Chick . But the new kids who are in their 40s ? Does Brad have a classic tune and album . I saw him live never went nuts . But he is great . Wynton Marsalis, now he has some serious classic albums. Anyway , what do I know I’m just a frustrated guy looking for enlightenment. Love your channel , would love to see you make a classic lp . I have had an idea about a transatlantic bass album with me and you and some other nut cases doing something via this internet . Will ask you again another day

      Christian Mcbride a complete classic guy and musician . I’m just thinking about this stuff , Chick and the electric band was a complete classic! An exiting time . I still have the vhs taped from tv concert . Hymn of the seventh galaxy another classic . Thank you chick and thank you Paul . This lockdown is driving me nuts , I was thinking of how Sunday’s used to be , going out to a Sunday afternoon gig . Without a care
