The easy guide to a low carb lifestyle for beginners

  • ✍ A low-carb lifestyle can have several benefits for women over 40. Here are some of the potential advantages:
Weight management: As women age, they may experience changes in metabolism and hormonal fluctuations, which can make weight management more challenging. Low-carb diets, such as the ketogenic diet or a moderate low-carb approach, can be effective for weight loss and weight maintenance. By reducing carbohydrates and increasing protein and healthy fats, low-carb diets can help control hunger, promote satiety, and improve body composition.
Improved insulin sensitivity: Insulin resistance becomes more common with age, particularly among women. A low-carb diet can help improve insulin sensitivity, meaning your body can utilize insulin more effectively to regulate blood sugar levels. This can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
Hormonal balance: Carbohydrate intake can affect hormone levels, particularly insulin and cortisol. High-carb diets can lead to blood sugar spikes and crashes, which can disrupt hormonal balance and contribute to mood swings, fatigue, and other symptoms. By moderating carbohydrate intake, women may experience more stable energy levels and improved mood.
Reduced inflammation: Chronic inflammation is linked to various health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Low-carb diets can help lower inflammation markers in the body, potentially reducing the risk of developing inflammatory diseases.
Improved heart health: Low-carb diets often prioritize whole foods, including lean proteins, healthy fats, and non-starchy vegetables. These dietary choices can promote heart health by reducing the intake of refined carbohydrates, saturated fats, and processed foods. By improving cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and blood sugar control, low-carb diets may lower the risk of heart disease.
Enhanced cognitive function: Some studies suggest that low-carb diets may have cognitive benefits, including improved mental clarity and focus. Stable blood sugar levels achieved through carbohydrate restriction can prevent energy crashes and promote sustained cognitive performance.
Better sleep quality: Sleep disturbances become more common with age, and diet can play a role in sleep quality. Low-carb diets can help regulate blood sugar levels and minimize blood sugar fluctuations, which can contribute to better sleep patterns and overall sleep quality.
It's important to note that while a low-carb lifestyle can offer benefits, individual responses may vary. It's recommended to consult with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian before making any significant dietary changes, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or take medications. They can provide personalized guidance based on your specific needs and goals.

Why is this just now sinking in with me at 68? Who knew you would not be hungry or have cravings by just lightening up the carbs. I’ve been doing this for 63 days. So glad to see more people trying it. Your videos make me want to keep going! Thank you! ❤

Thank you Barrett. I just renewed my WW membership and I've been trying to lose the same 5 lbs. week after week but I keep losing control with the free foods. Watching you succeed with 100 total carbs gives me hope that I can succeed also. I tried keto but it was just too restrictive for me and I would binge. Most of the meal planning sites for keto are focused on making or buying keto versions of treats. Treats are what got me where I am today. I love your videos. You are very inspiring.

I just finished your video and it is spot on!!! I can't believe I am thinking what you just put into words. I have been doing low carb - keeping them in your range of 100 per day. I have switched to mostly full fat cheese. I have stopped eating processed foods. And I feel SO MUCH BETTER - physically and mentally. Yesterday I decided I am not doing WW any more because it is impossible for me to correctly calculate points when I eat out - and I live a big eating out life style at the age of 77. We do relatively casual on Friday nights and a steakhouse or Italian fine dining on Saturday nights. I eat out occasionally with my girlfriends during the week for lunch. WW was being a time consuming drag for me. I started doing Healthi and have given that up. I also did My Fitness Pal Premium and no long use it after going with Carb Manager. I LOVE Carb Manger. I did get the premium for $39.99 per year and it allows me to download recipes and create my own. I will only be using Carb Manger going forward. It is saving me time, energy and frustration. I can dictate daily notes into my iPhone and still have Carb Manger open on my computer. I am only going into this detail to validate your video - you gave us all EXCELLENT information. You are my hero, my mentor and my inspiration!!! Thank you for all you do!!

Barrett, you look stunning! Your hair & makeup & the flowers in the background - magnificent! I decided last Friday to switch over to the Diabetic plan only because I’m 64 & it’s a very slow process getting the pounds off. I also adore carbs, but the 100’ish carbs a day is very doable for me. I still eat oatmeal, rice, protein pancakes, just not at every meal. Maybe I’ll have oatmeal with protein at breakfast & then balance my day accordingly. I’m hoping this gives me the kick in the pants I need so those pants fit even better! Thanks for breaking it all down.

Great video Barrtett! I am 68 and I have been on WW since I was in my 30's. Use to lose easily but then menopause happened and I can honestly say for the last 20 years I have been on the roller coaster of losing a few, gaining a few, getting discouraged, and gain more. Only to rejoin back up to WW and repeat the same scenario. What is that saying about insanity? I did try Keto but found it to be too restrictive. Your 100 total carbs daily has given me new hope. I just received your cookbook and am so excited to try the recipes in it. I am committing to 30 days of simply 100 carbs a day. I can't imagine how great it will feel to see a loss and feel better about my health! Thank you for your inspiration!

I had to watch this again . Thursday went to my Dr . My cholesterol went up and my triglycerides went up from March. I thought he was going to go through the roof. Barrett, he praised me, my A1C went down and sugars are controlled,my weight went down not by tons but almost 5 lbs and he told me whatever I was following to keep at it. Blew me away. Last week I worried everyday talking myself into that I had done so wrong. I am so thankful for your channel and you really made me realize exactly what I was eating. Your the Best. Have a wonderful Sunday my friend.🙂

I was on the WW so-called "diabetic" plan and I found that it is in no way a "diabetic" plan. The only difference between the regular WW plan and the diabetic WW plan is that a few foods that are zero points on the regular plan have points on the diabetic plan.
The WW "diabetic" plan is a farce, IMHO.
I just quit WW and I too have a few months left on my commitment. I am using the Healthi app, tracking calories and macros, including carbs, with much better results!

Thanks for clarifying keto vs. low carb. Lately I’m following the DASH Diet and it only allows so many grains per day. I use MyFitnessPal to make sure my carbs are under control. I love veggies so that helps. I’ve used butternut squash instead of potatoes. So many delicious veggie choices as sides. Hoping to see the scale move down! Thanks Barrett. I’m on WW and I’m locked in for a while too. I eat full fat dairy and count it as light. We need fat in our diet. If I have avocado, I count it as 1/4 of one. Sorta the way some folks do “dirty” keto. The fat keeps you fuller longer. And the caloric value between full fat and fat free dairy usually isn’t the different. I feel zero guilt tweaking the system to fit my needs.

Also that's funny you say that about dental x-rays because I've been at the dentist twice in the past week getting major work done. I wonder why that's a problem. I'm going to ask my dietitian. Don't forget when you put that on that you do have a free dietitian. All you have to do is click on the bubble chat up in the top right and you can ask questions anytime. Thank you again for all this helpful information. I had just started trying to go to a more plant-based diet. Which of course increases my total carbs eaten. I know you mentioned in a prior video that adding a healthy fat to your carb kept the carb from spiking your blood sugar. Did your nutritionist give you any info on combining carbs with protein, fat or fiber keeping the spikes from happening? Also, I read in the past that if you start with a protein, fat or fiber prior to the carb, it aomehiw keeps the carb from spiking your blood sugar. I am not sure how this would work or if it is accurate

Good Morning.. I'm jumping off the WW bandwagon... in one of your video you mentioned that you count carbs only.. i think you said you do 30 carbs each meal and 15 for a snack...or is is 45 carbs for entire day?

    • @livinglifeontrack
      @livinglifeontrack  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes a ceiling of 30 carbs per meal and 15 on a snack. But I average around 50 to 60 total carbs per day. Not net carbs, total carbs.

Just wondering if carbs need to be adjusted based on your weight. Under WW I'm under points but never close to 100 carbs closer to 150.

Hi Barrett! I'm enjoying your information on the Low Carb plan and so glad that it's been working for you. I signed up for the basic Carb Manager app but can't quite figure out how to delete an item from a meal. Is there an easy solution? Do they have a quick tutorial I can watch. I may decide to upgrade to premium but not if I am not able to figure this out.

I love your videos lately on low carb. My husband is Type 2 diabetic and started on insulin this year after the doctor increased medication year after year. I am going to sign him up with Carb Manager so we can do this together. I am a Lifetime member with WW but getting tired of it.

I gave up all animal products years ago, and I will never go back. I felt good as a vegetarian for about 15 years and even better as vegan for about 5 years ago. Since I gave up dairy, I no longer get the colds, congestion and runny nose I would have every fall and winter. I grew up eating lots of carbs but very little meat, and my siblings and myself were always healthy. As an adult, I have rarely gone to a doctor. I will continue to base my diet mainly on carbs and I have always been healthy. Life is short and I will enjoy the foods I love. I'm a little bit overweight but I think I just need to exercise more. My weight no longer yo-yo's as it did when I was vegetarian. I will never go back to consuming animal products that come from miserable tortured animals, even dairy cows, that are pumped full of antibiotics (which compromises our immune systems) and pesticides, etc. I'm happy with the foods I eat.

It's Carb Manager. And you're probably looking at net carbs and or marked the wrong thing. Do moderate carbs.

Downloaded Carb Manager. Commented incorrectly. It gave me 12 total carbs which seems ridiculous, but it was set for Keto. I now see where I can go to change it. Moderate carbs gave me 74 total so I switched it to 33/33/33 which gives me 98 total carbs. It's a starting point. We'll see. Thanks for being the lighthouse!

Hi.....is it really that freeing and simple? 😊... ive been counting calories or points for ever and a day... like 50 yrs, yes, thats right! Obviously this isnt working. So, you dont count calories at all? You just use common sense for your servings and log the carb count? I really do love meat lol. Hard to wrap this 65 yr old mind around this 😊 but i do trust you and your information. Thanks so much...

    • @livinglifeontrack

YES I don't count calories at all. It tends to just fall naturally in line. If I had a few weeks where I wasn't losing or gained a few weeks in a row I would Make sure my portion size is where in order but honestly overeating is very hard because you're not hungry. And I can't believe I'm saying that!
