I was lucky enough to be sat in the hall that evening and to this day I still regard this as the best live performance I've ever witnessed from a brass band
I listened to this about 300 times by now but it still stuns me as it did the first time. Breathtaking is indeed the best description there is. One of the best soloist and one of the best composers know to mankind combined brings tears to your eyes. Simply brillant.
In my humble opinion the best sop player ever. No gimmicks like looking at people in the band or putting his hand in his pocket during stand up solos no lifting his knee when he plays up high just sheer class. There are bflat cornet players who can play live and let die without the knee jerks.
B Flat Trumpet:most beautiful song I've ever heard is Mae by Herb Alpert, for the Sop this one,and for the B flat Cornet Charles Brady L'histore de soldat
All I want to add to all the comments is thank you, Peter, Phillip and the band. What more can I add that has not already been said. It always brings tears to my eyes: a beautiful piece and played by a true Yorkshire man.
snelly eh? loved the man..... apart from the day he gave me a right bollocking when recording Wilfred Heatons Partita, to be fair he did apologise to me later.
Love the work smart not hard attitude in the last phrase. No reason the front row cornets can't play that and give the soloist a breather before the high c
In 1992, Peter came out to New Zealand and played for Rotorua Brass in the A Grade. We got out best result -2nd. Peter was stunning and totally lifted our band. We played Paganini Variations and London Overture. What a great player and really nice guy.
Peter Roberts accompanied by the YBS band at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall during the European Brass Band Championships in 2004. 'Flowerdale' is from Hymn of the Highlands by Philip Sparke. Flowerdale is a forest in Wester Ross, Scotland, which is well-known for it’s beautiful waterfall and impressive displays of wild flowers.
26 years away, and this made me homesick for England like I've never felt before... it brought tears to my eyes... Thanks for posting it... fabulous, ...truly fabulous!
This really is a stunning piece my brother from youth to man was a dedicated player a solo player wonderful Memories But because of You Tube ‘ I know what this life time dedication is all about I now embrace it He passed away at the age of 65 But he will live on So Thank You so much you really don’t know what joy you bring My you always continue. ❤
I love this piece it puts tears to my eyes. I play sop as well. That top C at the end was Incredible. A really good overall band playing the solo was the best!
My husband will it play on a concert in a few weeks - i listen and listen and listen, because my tears are running, like Amazonas - it is soooooo wunderful.
I'll be performing this again in May with a Texas brass ensemble on my Schilke Eb trumpet. I know: Sacrilege to not do it on cornet. But my Besson Eb cornet was too much of a struggle to keep in tune, especially in the higher register. I've also done it on a Bach C trumpet.
I was there in the Royal Concert Hall. YBS's Performances were way above anything before. Both, St Magnus and Music of the Spheres, were simply amazing! But Peter Roberts made it pure Magic with that Solo. To bad YBS was "going down" only few later.
Brilliant, The last note shows he can correct his instrument too...think that sop must have come from a dodgy batch......the only explanation, surely........
Thank you, it's very nice of you, but I have the recording myself. May I also advise you that it is not smart nor safe to put your e-mail address on the net where everyone can see it. Even if you don't have any useful information, hackers may break into your account just for the fun they have doing it.
Philippe, I would love to get this recording on CD,, I had a look around and the score keeps turning up but not a CD. The only information that i can search is Flowerdale Philip Sparks,, If you can give me any more Information on the CD name or where It is available I would be very gratefull. Thanks, Ray

Even after so many years, I can't hear this without crying. The sheer beauty of it.
Me too!
And me ❤
So do I. It's so enormous emotional played.

I agree, in fact it brings me to tears every time.
It's the tone of his notes that sets this soloist apart from others who take this piece of music on, never get tired of listening to it

I played sop for 11years and with Fodens under Howard Snell.will always say this man was the best there is on Sop...
Fodens brill under Snell (still are!) Must have been a great time in your life!
Fantastic times@@georgemelitsis2607
Absolute..and Alan Wycherley also..two marvellous exponents of the Soprano..

Just STUNNING!! It makes me cry every time.
This man totally OWNS this incredible piece of music.

Peter is the best soprano cornetist ever high praise but who will disagree.
Played at my Wedding almost 10 years ago.
Still goosebumps remembering that day.
Outstanding performance !
Crystal clear soprano cornet solo, cannot be played better. Well done Peter & YBS Band.

The pinnacle of all Soprano players - simply beautiful :-)

How he pushes through the last note is remarkable. The support this guy must have... beautiful.
Listened to this many times and it still gives me goosebumps! Stunning playing of a beautiful melody.

2:35 onwards gets me everytime! Absolutely awesome playing!!
As an ex soprano player this is as good as it gets

Truly inspirational performance.
Listened to this so many times. Absolutely beautiful playing.
Absolutely wonderful, never get bored of listening to this
Flawless.
Brilliant performance from a true master who undoubtably loves the instrument
Truly breathtaking! Never tire of listening to this
Incredible player it does not get any better then this .
감상했습니다.
Peter is a virtuoso 👏👏
It just looks so easy the way he plays it, like he could just do it again and again.
Absolute magic!
...and yet Peter Roberts retired shortly after this performance, having said that his best playing years were behind him.
That was incredible! I just started learning this piece today (15 April 2024).
Well done lovely control and expression
one of the best
What a player fabulous
done so very well, what a gift
And only if only someone would play our national anthem with such intense love, loyalty and honor as this.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... can it get more sublime.
stunning xxx
Beautifull performance Mr Roberts!!!

I think he would turn it down to be honest !

Lindo de mais !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm going to play my cornet tonight....wonderful!
Brilliant performance I bought this piece a few weeks and tried to play it, very hard piece well done
The mans a genius
Nothing comes close to this performance - Well Done
I’ve always remembered the one extra accident note played by euphonium around the 1:21 mark and I always love it.
You mean they are human after all? This is a warm, lovely, masterful performance by the lot of them, with Peter Robert's cornet adding the toppings.
@@mjd4174 I wasn’t being sarcastic.
I really enjoy this performance. I prefer the extra note.
It was actually the Eb tuba player, he just has an incredible tone :p
I wish my cracked notes were beautiful enough to be called extra accident notes.
Peter the best...

VeryBeautiful
Embouchure of steel
GREAT
Favoloso
Super :-)
Download link for the sheet music please
I believe it's Yorkshire Building Society (YBS)
Does anybody know the inspiration for the composition?
Ending in top C hardest note to hold
May you share us the music sheet?
does anyone know what the band is called
Mark Rottenbury the Yorkshire building society brass band I believe
Tuba Dan The Music Man
OK, why hasn't Carolina Crown performed this yet?
It just annoys me that he never seems to be challenged by those high notes. He is just standing there chewing his gum :-).
😢

What a great performance 👏👏👏👏. What a shame they dressed him up like a leprechaun!! Surely a performance this good should have a dress suit at least?
