I have changed my bulbs once before a few years ago. I needed to do it again. I watched you video and purchased the clip pliers. With the clip pliers and my 3/8 drive Dewalt impact it took me less than 15 minutes to remove everting, 5 minutes to change the bulbs and 15 minutes to reinstall all thanks to your detailed video.

I just did mine today and accessed the rear of the headlight without even popping the hood. Wheel well, push pins and screws. Then 2-3 more loosing the light and I could reach the bulb. Great video! Always other ways to resolve a problem.

Thank you and ya it's a little ridiculous. Also you can do it a different way by bending the bumper but you take the chance of damaging the paint and clear coat. But that is one way to save time doing it. But I prefer to show the recommended way to do it. 👍
@@TonyTheTechnician I did it that way and can’t get my bumper back on...gonna take it off like you did and see how that works.
I know you can do it by bending it but have always just removed it myself. I can see how bending it and trying to put it back on can run into some alignment issues with the clips on the side. I hope you get it figured out 👍

Thank you for this video! I had to replace the whole assembly that was damaged by vandalism and it helped a lot. I did it in 30min. And to all the comments saying it should only take 5 minutes, that’s exactly why I try to do all my work myself. I’d rather do it right then pay someone to cut corners and cause other issues that they are gonna swear wasn’t their fault.

First time I changed a bulb on my Malibu it took me an hour and a half, now I can do it in less then an hour. Great video. It's ridiculous that the car makers do this on purpose so you have to bring the car to them to change a light bulb, a freaking light bulb

I have only taken it off once before this and that's when I plasti dipped the grill and installed some lights behind the grill and it took awhile haha but ya once you have done it once it is a pretty fast process. but still alot for just a headlight.
Agreed man... try having an issue with the wiring harness or having a short with it... damn headlight has went for the THIRD time in 3 months and this job is becoming ridiculous! I mean I remember on my 02 dodge Neon, you could literally remove the headlight assembly from the top of the hood. Didn’t even need any tools... took me 5 minutes if I was taking my time 😂 damn I miss that little thing lol

Tony, your video was a tremendous help with my 09 Malibu. I hate to say it by my low beam on pass side has been out for 3 years. Total time was at 3 hours with 2 trips to the parts store. I replaced everything because I didn't want another light to go out because I don't want to do this again. The wife had to assist with getting the front back on. take your time is the best advice I can give. If something doesn't fit correctly, stop for a breather.,..
Exactly. There is a faster way but it can be damaging to the car so I would rather just do it the right way and it was very smart that you just went ahead and replaced them all. Glad the video helped 👍

My headlight in my 11 went out in Phoenix in Summer. I had no garage or AC area and shops wanted $200. I waited until midnight when it was a cool 109 degrees and took the bumper off and changed the bulbs. Cursing as I went while laying on hot pavement. Sweating ro death but got it done. With an impact like you have its a 30 minute job tops
Ya I was in Texas at the time of this video but lived in Sierra Vista before that so I know what you mean. Working on a car outside is rough. Glad you got it done and saved some money though 👍

Much obliged, Tony. Getting a local mechanic to accomplish this not infrequent task usually costs me around $150.00. It looks like I ought to be able to accomplish this myself....weather permitting.

I did it the exact way u did... worked perfect... took about an hour but only because I was using a regular socket.. if I had a drill it would have been so faster

7:00 I've been having an enormous amount of trouble unscrewing that bolt. My ratchet was hopeless, and the drill won't budge either. I go out to the car and try to remove that bolt. When it doesn't move, I drown it in WD40 and try again the next day. I'm at a loss for what else to do.
I remember I had to do this on my Malibu and it was a nightmare! And I hope the person who designed this how to replace headlights should be punished in the neck

TonyTheTechnician yes I had to take off the bumper and it was a nightmare to me they wasn’t too many TH-cam videos on it back then, I had to call my dealer and told me it was $300 to change it

There's an easier way. Never have to even open the hood..
@@ericgraham6921 Only way is with good swivel extensions and even then the paint can get damaged on the bumper. Doesn't excuse the idiocy in this design.

I had watched this video before a while ago and just was rewatching it and I just realized that your side marker light/parking light bulb is out my dude! you may wanna check the opposite side to see if both bulbs have burned out as well oh and I don't mean the turn signal bulbs I mean the ones on the side with the reflector housing I just recently replaced those bulbs myself (since mine were going dim) if you still own the car and want to replace them I could give you the bulb type :)

Is the bolt by the driver side wheel reverse threaded for some reason? When I try turning it counter clockwise, it's not budging.
No it is not. It may be rusted or stripped. But I know it's not reverse thread

Very good video. I'm guessing the answer is yes because that is what you did but just want to double check. To replace the shutter, do you need to remove the whole bumper or can you get at it be removing the plastic pan on the underside behind the bumper?

I couldn't get the front bumper off that easy had problems getting the electrical part to the front door but got that off today so got the front and back doors off wanna take the front bumper off and the front headlights and all the back lights out too before I end up painting it I have been doing the car almost a month now but this was the first time I took this much stuff off a vehicle before painting it and only been trying to paint almost two years and still not very good at it. I will get better the more I paint though.

Hey Tony, Thanks for this video, it's been super helpful for me, my car is a Saturn Aura of the same year, very similar. Not too sure if you still have this ride, but if you do, do you know what type of bulb is needed for the gear selector/shifter?

I got my Bu a year and half ago and not long after each low beam stopped working but it was the connection to the bulb that fails. On separate occasions I opened up just the one side that wasn’t working and put a zip tie around the connector nice and tight and it kept them working for over a year.
At this time I have to do the drivers side becase the damn connection is failing again, bulb still works its the cheap ass harness that fails. I know cause I could smack the headlight and back on it came but no more. So I needed a refresher on how to take whole front off. Putting in new low beams. The part I absolutely hate the most on doing this is getting the damn housing back into its correct place. Heres to hoping its easier with the whole front of the car off.
One other thing always put a small zip tie around the connector for added tightness of connection to bulb.

The inside corner of the lens---should it come out over the top of the fascia or should it tuck in to the fascia? A customer believes it needs to come out, but it looks to me that it tucks in.

@@TonyTheTechnician Okay, that's what I was thinking. The customer wasn't upset about it, thankfully. She had gone a year and a half without a driver's side low beam headlight, so she was just super happy to get that fixed!
I need to point out: the (2) 10mm bolts next to the hood latch ARE DIFFERENT from the others (they have a weird 'tapered' seat. CAREFULLY INSPECT THE WIRING HARNESS!!! Chevy used way too small of a gauge wire for the headlamps and I've seen them MELT THE CONNECTORS. Dorman manufacturing actually sells the entire wiring harness assembly because they gave so much trouble. You might need to replace the wiring harness or the connectors. The new connectors have MUCH LARGER WIRE! Don't skip this step! I found out the hard way!

How do you know if it's the light bulb or the hole headlight that needs to be replaced??
Peel back one end and replace bulb no major surgery
If you want your paint to be damaged down the road then yes go ahead. Bending the bumper is bad on the paint and clear coat
you know i’m intimidated but i would rather spend half a day trying to do this then take it to a dealer, fuck them for making this so hard

Scuff it up with some high grit sand paper. Then flat black primer and either flat black paint, plasti dip or bed liner.

One question ..what is the cost for the job...
If you do it yourself it's whatever the price is of the lights you choose. If you go to the dealership it will be around 75 to 100 for the lights them probably around another 50 to 75 for labor. So around 130 to 170 but that's just an estimate.

Hey Tony, I've gone through and replaced the bulbs on my 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. The problem I'm having is getting the 10 mm bolt in the wheel wells to line up and thread. Any tips?
James McGregor hmm haven’t had that issue. Try putting all the push pins in first to line them up and if need be use a pick or smaller bolt and push them into a couple of the holes to help line up some of the others if that makes sense

I know this is late but for anyone else with this problem the bolt is at a slight angle not straight up and down.
Tony, I typically like to be more diplomatic but what a pain it the nuts. Just ridiculous. This makes my wife's Volvo look more reasonable.

@@crekow try to pull on the bumper while you do it. Put tension on those screws to help them back out
replace all bulbs at the same time or you will be taking all this off again soon!

Thanks for the video. I never would have bought my Malibu if I had known what a chore it was going to be to replace headlight bulbs. Doesn’t help that the lights automatically come on at all times and the bulbs seem to burn out more often. I think Chevy may have brought in a team of chimpanzees to design this part of the car.
