    This list was based on maximum recorded size instead of average size which is why the White-Tailed deer is on this list and the mule deer isn't.
    Mule deer are larger than white tailed deer on average but the white-tailed deer has a larger recorded maximum size.
    Hope this comment clears things up :)

    I came across an elk in Washington state and it was 6’ at the shoulder. I slowly backed away from it and I think it knew that I was no threat so it just continued walking in the direction that it had been walking. It was so majestic!! It’s a memory that I will treasure!

      OK, but what about the moose? Wolves take down moose and a wolf is only slightly larger than a large breed dog and moose can weigh over 2000 lbs unless you've seen one in person you can't imagine the size of moose. Wolves are impressive!!

    To put into perspective regarding elk, Rocky Mountain elk (a subspecies) were found to produce a bugle that can reach 90 decibels at 5 meters away! Why are they so loud? It's to advertise their fitness to cow elk and to show off to other bulls. An alternate name, wapiti (“white deer” in Shawnee), comes from the light-coloured coat of the bull elk. And you definitely don't want to mess with moose! When a moose delivers a hard, fast kick with its hind leg, you can hear the tendons and ligaments pop and snap when the hoof comes back at the end of the kick. They can kick straight ahead and will also rear up and stomp. Where bears and wolves want to eat you and your babies, kicking and stomping can be a formidable defense.
    As for white-tailed deer subspecies, one with a neat story is the Avery Island deer, named after Avery Island in Louisiana, where Tabasco sauce is made. They're found in southern Texas as well, but were first described on Avery Island, which isn't an island but rather a salt dome. Tabasco was founded by Edmund McIlhenny, but the subspecies was discovered with the help of Edward McIlhenny. Edward was a naturalist who saved snowy egrets from extinction by bringing many to Avery Island. He formed a wildlife refuge in the area, and when he sent deer specimens to the state museum of natural history, it was there that they realized it was a subspecies that was undescribed. And thus, the museum named it in honor of Edward: mcilhennyi

    Ok a gentle critique. White-tail males do not begin to grow antlers until their second spring at which time they are approximately one year old.
    The do, however, grow the bases on top of their heads that the antlers will sprout from the following spring at a few months old.
    I know it’s a fine point but an important one in my opinion.

    Those trophy specimens that were estimated live weights of white tailed deer are far away outliers of the norm, so I get where you’re coming from, but 99% of the time if you see a mule deer and white tailed deer in the same area(white-tailed deer now exist where formerly it was only mule deer in the western U.S) it’s always pretty obvious mule deer are larger, so I can’t say I agree with the point, but I get it. I almost got trampled by a bull, cow, and calf moose that came running out of the willows without warning a couple weeks ago. They were just a l few feet away, my heart was definitely pounding.

    For a whitetail to reach 512lbs they would need some other factor playing a roll. Whitetail are designed to be fast and agile creatures. You’ll most commonly see them from 100-200lbs. Deer from the north are typically bigger than those from the south. Biggest whitetail I’ve ever seen was around 300lbs.

    These critters are beautiful. And venison is tasty. I've had a moose (elk) roast that was cooked like a beef roast so it was dry with a bit of chew but it was a sweet meat. Maybe someday I'll have a chance to cook it myself so that it isn't so dry. Elk (wapiti) tenderloin on the grill was incredible. Whitetail ends ups in a lot of chili and sausages, burgers and bbq.

    • @oscarflip8561
      @oscarflip8561 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Buffalo is a term often loosely used for different taxonomy of the tribe bovini in the family bovidae, whether that’s the subtribe bubalina, the subfamily bovinae, or the tribe bovini. Bison bison(that’s the Latin name) is in the buffalo tribe Bovini in the family bovidae, so it is in fact a species of what the cammon name is for that tribe-buffalo. No one gets mad about calling a Cape buffalo a buffalo when it’s in the genus Syncerus not the genus bos, so idk why everyone throws a fit about the genus bison being referred to as a buffalo.

    • @JaxanOBirdy
      @JaxanOBirdy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@oscarflip8561 So I'm allowed to call a Lion a Tiger because their both in the genus Panthera?

    • @oscarflip8561
      @oscarflip8561 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JaxanOBirdy yeah, not the same. You can call them both cats since they’re both in the family felidae. What you’re saying about the not calling the species bison bison a buffalo is like saying you can’t refer to either as a cat because they’re a specific species of cat.

    • @JaxanOBirdy
      @JaxanOBirdy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@oscarflip8561 Okay, so what your telling me is that I can call a cow a buffalo aswell

    • @oscarflip8561
      @oscarflip8561 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JaxanOBirdy yeah, because domestic cattle are in the tribe bovini as well and are actually in the namesake genus bos. Just like you can call a leafy spurge a euphorbia, or you can call a salvia a mint, or you can call humans, gorillas, or orangutans great apes. As long as if you say buffalo and you’re not trying to refer to a specific separate species you can call an American bison or domestic cattle a species of buffalo, and you’re 100% correct.
